macOS can make a MacBook’s trackpad easier to control and on-screen content easier to see, but it cannot turn the built-in display into a touchscreen. For trackpad behavior, start at Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control; for magnification, open System Settings > Accessibility > Zoom. The right setting depends on whether you want to improve pointer movement, clicking, dragging, or reading small text.
Can you enable a MacBook touchscreen in macOS?
No setting in macOS makes the built-in MacBook display respond to touch. Apple describes MacBook input through its keyboard and trackpad; its 2025 MacBook Air specifications list a Liquid Retina display and Force Touch trackpad, and Apple’s conformance document for the MacBook it covers marks touchscreen input “Not applicable.” That document is specific to the model it covers, not a statement about every external accessory.

Make the trackpad easier to control
Adjust pointer and scrolling behavior
Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control. Depending on your Mac, you may find double-click speed and Trackpad Options. Trackpad options can include scrolling, inertia, scroll speed, and dragging or dragging style. Available controls vary by Mac.

Change one option at a time, then try the movement or action that was difficult. This makes it easier to tell which adjustment helps, and avoids changing behaviors you already find comfortable.
Turn on Tap to click
Open the trackpad settings and enable Tap to click if you would rather tap the trackpad surface than press it to click. This changes how the trackpad registers input; it does not make the display touch-sensitive.

Zoom in to read on-screen content
Open System Settings > Accessibility > Zoom. macOS offers zoom controls using a keyboard shortcut, a trackpad gesture, or a modifier-key scroll gesture. Apple documents a trackpad method that uses a three-finger double tap and drag. Check the Zoom settings for the available controls and shortcuts on your Mac.

- Full Screen: magnifies the whole display.
- Split Screen: shows a magnified area in a separate part of the display.
- Picture-in-Picture: magnifies a smaller area in a movable window.
Choose the view that fits what you need to read: full-screen magnification changes the view across the display, while the other modes keep some of the surrounding content visible.

Other accessibility options
For specific viewing or input needs, macOS also includes Hover Text, which enlarges text beneath the pointer, and Switch Control, an alternative way to operate a Mac. These are separate accessibility tools, not touchscreen modes. Apple’s Accessibility overview lists them alongside Zoom and Pointer Control.
