Which Mac Terminal Should You Choose: Mado, iTerm2, kitty, Warp or Ghostty?

Choose a Mac terminal by workflow: iTerm2 for reported feature breadth, Ghostty for documented native Mac features, kitty for cross-platform configuration, or Warp for connected AI and team tools. Mado needs extra verification.

There is no single best terminal emulator for every Mac. Choose iTerm2 for a mature set of macOS-specific tools, Ghostty for documented Metal rendering and native Mac features, kitty for a configurable option described as cross-platform, or Warp if integrated AI and team workflows matter more than keeping those features offline. Treat Mado as the least verified option here: the available comparison is written by its builder, and primary project documentation was not established.

What matters when choosing a Mac terminal?

A terminal emulator is the app that presents a command-line session. It is separate from the shell running inside it and from command-line tools you install. You can often keep your shell and tools when switching terminal apps, but workflows tied to a terminal’s profiles, automation, image support, or collaboration features may need adjustment.

Start with what you need the app to do: integrate with macOS, work across operating systems, support a particular automation or multiplexer workflow, or add AI and shared team capabilities. Feature descriptions are not the same as hands-on performance testing; the sources available for these five products do not establish a reliable speed ranking.

How the five options differ

Terminal Best fit What the cited sources establish Important qualification
iTerm2 Mac users who depend on a broad, mature feature set A September 2026 comparison reports a hotkey window, triggers, searchable profiles, inline images, a Python API, tmux integration, and session restoration. Those specific feature details come from a secondary comparison, not captured text from the official feature page. Check that the integrations you rely on remain supported.
Ghostty Users seeking documented GPU rendering and native macOS features Official documentation describes Metal rendering on macOS, native tabs and splits, Quick Terminal, AppleScript automation, Quick Look, Secure Keyboard Entry, themes, ligatures, and Kitty graphics protocol support. Its rendering and UI details are documented features, not proof that it is faster or better for every workload.
kitty Users who value cross-platform use and file-based configuration A September 2026 comparison describes kitty as available for macOS, Linux, and BSD, configured through kitty.conf, with tabs, splits, and inline images. The cited official documentation did not establish a detailed current macOS feature list for this comparison. Confirm support for your specific setup.
Warp Users who want integrated AI or shared team workflows Warp’s official product page emphasizes natural-language commands, agent runs users can watch and steer, and reusable team workflows. The app can run offline after its first launch, but AI and real-time collaboration features require internet access.
Mado Curious users willing to verify an emerging project before relying on it The surfaced title-matching article is by Tom Dringer, who identifies himself as Mado’s builder. Primary Mado project documentation, release status, support, and feature scope were not established in the available sources.

When is iTerm2 the right choice?

Choose iTerm2 if your Mac workflow depends on its reported feature breadth, especially profiles, triggers, a hotkey window, a Python API, tmux integration, or session restoration. The September 2026 Oxide comparison says session restoration can keep jobs running while the app restarts, but that is a secondary-source description rather than a verified test. Check the [official iTerm2 features page] and your own setup for the functions you depend on.

Why choose Ghostty?

Ghostty is a strong fit if you want a terminal that documents both GPU rendering and Mac-specific integration. Its [official feature documentation] says macOS rendering uses Metal and lists native tabs and splits, Quick Terminal, AppleScript automation, Quick Look, and Secure Keyboard Entry. It also documents themes, ligatures, and support for the Kitty graphics protocol.

Ghostty states its compatibility principle this way: “If xterm does something, we should do the same thing.” That describes an aim for xterm compatibility; it should not be read as a guarantee that every behavior is identical.

When does Warp make sense?

Warp is the clearest choice among these five when AI assistance or team workflows are the reason you are considering a different terminal. Its [product page] highlights natural-language commands, steerable agent runs, and reusable team workflows. Its [installation and setup documentation] says Warp supports macOS 10.14 or later on Intel or Apple silicon with Metal-capable hardware.

There is an important connectivity distinction: Warp can run offline after its first launch, but AI and real-time collaboration require an internet connection. If offline use is a hard requirement, decide whether you need only the terminal itself or those connected features too.

What should you verify before trying Mado?

The available Mado comparison is builder-authored, and the primary project documentation needed to independently confirm its feature claims, availability, release status, and support was not established. That does not show that Mado is unsuitable; it means there is not enough evidence here to recommend it on the same footing as the documented alternatives. Before relying on it, look for current project documentation and releases, and confirm that it supports your Mac and required workflow.

How to make the choice

  1. List the workflow you cannot afford to lose. Note any dependence on profiles, triggers, tmux, automation, graphics protocols, or shared team features.
  2. Pick the matching candidate. Start with iTerm2 for its reported macOS feature breadth, Ghostty for documented Metal and native Mac features, kitty for cross-platform configuration, or Warp for integrated AI and collaboration.
  3. Check the current documentation for that feature. Product capabilities and support can change; verify the specific behavior, platform, and setup you need before moving a daily workflow.
  4. Test your real session before switching fully. Open the projects and tools you use, check your shell and configuration, and confirm that automation or multiplexer behavior works as expected.

The September 2026 Oxide comparison reports that iTerm2 is macOS-only; Ghostty supports macOS and Linux; kitty supports macOS, Linux, and BSD; and Warp supports macOS, Linux, and Windows. These are dated secondary-source platform descriptions, so consult each project’s current documentation before choosing based on a non-Mac system. Warp’s own feature comparison, updated October 6, 2026, compares Warp with Terminal.app, iTerm, Alacritty, and WezTerm; it does not provide a complete comparison of all five options discussed here.
