Which Linux Terminal Commands Should You Know on a Server?

A practical guide to the Linux commands that help you inspect an unfamiliar server, read and manage files, check capacity, investigate networking, and review systemd services safely.

Start on an unfamiliar Linux server with read-only commands: identify your account and location, check the system, inspect storage and processes, then examine networking and services. Commands and options vary by distribution, installed packages, permissions, and service manager, so check man COMMAND or COMMAND --help on the server before relying on a flag.

Get oriented before you change anything

A terminal command runs in the context of the current account and directory. Confirm both before working with files or using administrative privileges.

  • whoami prints the current username.
  • pwd prints the current working directory.
  • hostname prints the system’s host name.
  • cd PATH changes the working directory; cd without a path usually returns to the account’s home directory.
  • ls lists directory contents. For more detail, ls -l shows a long listing; ls -a includes hidden entries.
  • history shows commands recorded by the current shell, where history is enabled.
  • man COMMAND opens the installed manual page when one is available. COMMAND --help often gives a shorter option summary.

Options can differ between implementations and versions. For standard GNU file and text utilities, consult the GNU Coreutils manual, while treating the server’s own manual and help output as the practical reference for its installed command.

Read files, search text, and handle archives

Use the least disruptive command that answers the question. Configuration files and logs may contain credentials, personal information, or other sensitive data; do not paste their contents into public channels.

  • cat FILE prints a file’s contents. It is convenient for short files, but can flood the terminal when the file is large.
  • less FILE opens content in a pager so you can move through it; press q to quit.
  • head FILE prints the beginning of a file, and tail FILE prints its end. For an active log, tail -f FILE follows new lines until interrupted.
  • grep 'TEXT' FILE searches file contents for matching text. Options such as case-insensitive matching vary by implementation; check local help.
  • find PATH -name 'PATTERN' searches a directory tree for names that match a pattern. Start at the narrowest useful path to avoid an unnecessarily broad search.
  • tar creates or reads tar archives. Its options and combinations can be less intuitive than basic file commands; inspect man tar before extracting an unfamiliar archive or writing over existing files.

Copy, move, create, or remove files carefully

These commands change data. Before running one, confirm the source, destination, and current directory; be particularly careful with recursive operations and options that overwrite or remove files.

  • cp SOURCE DESTINATION copies a file. Use a deliberate destination and check whether it already exists.
  • mv SOURCE DESTINATION moves or renames a file. A destination that already exists may be replaced, depending on options and implementation.
  • mkdir DIRECTORY creates a directory. Options such as -p can create missing parent directories as well; verify the path first.
  • rm FILE removes a file. Recursive removal can delete a directory tree, and recovery may not be straightforward. Never add recursive or force options casually.

For permissions, inspect the existing owner and mode before using a permission-changing command. chmod 777 is not a general-purpose fix: it grants read, write, and execute permissions to everyone. Set only the access the task requires. The GNU Coreutils manual documents common file operations, removal, and permission utilities.

Check storage without confusing filesystem space with folder size

df -h reports space usage for mounted filesystems in human-readable units. du -sh PATH estimates the space attributable to a particular path. They answer different questions: a filesystem can be nearly full even when one folder looks small, and a directory estimate need not match space consumed on the underlying device. Both commands are documented in the GNU Coreutils manual.

BOSGAME E5 11 Pro Mini PC, AMD Ryzen 5300U 4C/ 8T, Business Home Office PC
  • 【AMD Ryzen 3 5300U CPU: Outperforms N150 & 3500U】 BOSGAME E5 mini PC is powered by the TSMC 7nm FinFET architecture AMD Ryzen 3 5300U processor (4 Cores, 8 Threads, up to 3.8GHz boost, 6MB total cache). Compared to low-end Intel N150 or 3500U chips which only have 4 single threads and throttle under load, the 5300U delivers over 30% faster multi-core speed. Run 30+ browser tabs, large Excel sheets, and Zoom meetings simultaneously without system lag.
  • 【8GB DDR4 RAM & 256GB NVMe SSD Storage】 Installed with high-speed 8GB DDR4 dual-channel memory and a fast 256GB M.2 2280 SSD, eliminating slow boot times and application loading delays. • 【High-Capacity Dual M.2 SSD Storage Expansion】 Never worry about running out of space for your business files. In addition to the pre-installed 256GB system drive, the motherboard houses an extra empty internal M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 3.0 slot. This allows you to easily add a second solid-state drive for up to an additional 2TB of storage capacity (upgrades not included) without needing to remove or reinstall the original operating system.
  • 【Radeon 6-Core Graphics & Triple 4K Displays】 Integrated with official AMD Radeon Graphics (6 Graphics Cores, 1500 MHz frequency) for casual gaming, photo editing, and crisp 4K media decoding. Featuring 1x HDMI 2.0 port, 1x DisplayPort, and 1x Full-Function Type-C port, the E5 outputs true 4K@60Hz resolution to three monitors at once. This multi-screen setup eliminates constant window-switching for traders, programmers, and office workers.
  • 【Dual 2.5GbE LAN Ports for Advanced Networking】 Experience fast wired network transmission speeds up to 2500Mbps without lagging or buffering. The integration of dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports (powered by Realtek RTL8125 controller) makes this compact computer an exceptional hardware choice for tech enthusiasts. Easily configure it into software routers, hardware firewalls (pfSense, OpnSense), home NAS servers, or local homelabs.

Inspect system identity, uptime, memory, and processes

  • uname -a prints kernel and system information.
  • uptime reports how long the system has been running and includes load information.
  • who lists users currently logged in, as represented by the system’s session records.
  • free -h reports memory and swap figures in human-readable units on common Linux installations. It may not be installed everywhere.
  • ps aux displays a process snapshot using a common Linux form; available formats and columns can differ.
  • top provides a live, updating view of processes and resource use. Press q to quit.

Process listings can help identify what is running, but do not terminate a process based only on a matching name. First identify its owner, purpose, and relationship to the service or task at issue.

Check network configuration, sockets, and reachability

  • ip addr displays network interfaces and their addresses.
  • ip route displays routing information.
  • ss -tulpn inspects listening TCP and UDP sockets and associated process information where permissions allow. Some details may require elevated privileges.
  • ping HOST sends reachability probes to a host when the utility is installed and the network permits them.

A failed ping alone does not establish that an application or server is down: a firewall or network policy may block ping while allowing the service’s traffic. These commands inspect different layers—addressing, routes, listening sockets, and basic reachability—and no single one proves that an application is healthy.

Use this first-look sequence on an unfamiliar server

Run these inspection commands one at a time, reviewing each result before proceeding. They are intended as an initial orientation, not a substitute for investigating a specific incident.

  1. whoami — identify the account.
  2. pwd — confirm the current directory.
  3. hostname — identify the host.
  4. uname -a — inspect system and kernel information.
  5. uptime — see runtime and load information.
  6. df -h — check mounted filesystem capacity.
  7. free -h — inspect memory, if available.
  8. ps aux — take a process snapshot.
  9. ip addr — inspect interfaces and addresses.
  10. ss -tulpn — inspect listening sockets; process details may require permission.

For a particular service problem, follow with systemctl status SERVICE and journalctl -u SERVICE only if the server uses systemd. Prefer observation first; use sudo only for a specific administrative task that needs it, and understand the effect before changing files, permissions, or service state.
