For annotating PDFs with a pressure-sensitive pen, start with Xournal++: its official documentation spells out the most relevant tools and file caveat. For a flexible drawing surface, compare Rnote and Butterfly. For a multipage notebook or an older tablet PC, Saber and SpeedyNote may suit different workflows, but their detailed feature descriptions come from third-party reviews and should be checked against current project documentation.
The eight apps below are not equally well documented. Choose by how you take notes—on PDF pages, notebook pages, or a flexible canvas—and test the app with your actual Linux device before moving important work into it.

How to choose a Linux handwriting notes app
First decide what your notes are made of. A PDF annotation workflow depends on how the app handles the source document; a notebook workflow benefits from predictable pages and export; a canvas workflow favors freeform drawing and movement around the workspace. Stylus behavior, backup, and synchronization matter too, but feature descriptions do not guarantee that a particular device or setup will work well.

- Storage and portability: Check the native file format, export options, backup method, and whether synchronization is local or depends on a server.
Best-supported choice for PDF annotation: Xournal++
Xournal++ is the clearest starting point when handwriting on PDFs is central. Its official documentation describes pressure-sensitive stylus and pen-tablet input, including Wacom, Huion, and XP-Pen devices, as well as PDF highlighting and underlining, links, backgrounds, shapes, text, LaTeX, layers, and stylus-button mappings. It can export to SVG, PNG, and PDF, and documentation also lists autosave and backup features.

There is an important file-management detail: a .xopp file does not embed its background PDF. Keep the source PDF in a stable location and include it in your backup plan; otherwise, moving or deleting that PDF can leave the note without the page background. Xournal++ provides packages for several Linux distributions, along with Flatpak and AppImage options; use the project’s current installation instructions for your system.
Canvas and freeform drawing alternatives
Rnote: vector-based drawing and annotation
Rnote is described as a vector-based drawing app for sketching, handwritten notes, and annotating documents or pictures. That makes it a candidate to try if you want drawing and annotation in a flexible workspace. The available installation notes date to December 2022, so check the project’s current instructions rather than relying on older package guidance.

Butterfly: customizable infinite canvas
Butterfly is described in a third-party review as an infinite-canvas app with stylus and touch input, layers, multiple pages, editable elements, and image/PDF/SVG import and export. The review also describes offline drawing and export, plus local or WebDAV-backed storage. Decide how you will back up whichever storage arrangement you use; a synchronization option is not, by itself, a complete backup plan.
Lorien: an infinite-canvas option with limited detail established here
The 2026 LinuxLinks roundup includes Lorien as an infinite-canvas drawing and note-taking app. The available description does not establish a detailed current feature set, file-format support, or hardware compatibility. Treat it as a candidate to investigate rather than assuming it meets a particular export or tablet requirement.

Notebook-focused options
Saber: handwriting-first notes
A December 2024 LinuxLinks review describes Saber as a handwriting-focused app with canvas writing, multipage notes, a distinction between stylus input and finger navigation, PDF export, local storage, dark-mode note inversion, and synchronization- and encryption-related features. Those details are from a third-party review and may have changed. If a particular sync server or encryption workflow is essential, verify it in current project documentation and test that workflow before relying on it.
SpeedyNote: worth testing on older tablet hardware
A LinuxLinks review published December 25, 2025 and updated March 20, 2026 describes SpeedyNote as focused on classic tablet PCs and low-resolution or vintage hardware. It lists pressure-sensitive inking, multipage notebooks, annotation over PDF backgrounds, customizable page backgrounds, and portable .spn notebooks. These are useful reasons to try it on the device you intend to use, not proof of performance on every older machine; no comparative performance results are established here.

Three more apps in the roundup, with less detail available
A LinuxLinks roundup dated August 27, 2026 also lists Write and Writernote. It characterizes Write as suited to note-taking, brainstorming, and sketching, and describes Writernote as taking notes “in an intelligent way.” Those short descriptions do not establish current features, file formats, stylus support, or whether the wording about Writernote implies any particular technology. Check each project’s current documentation before choosing it for a specific need.
Can Joplin handle handwritten notes?
Joplin is a separate option for people who want a general notes app with some drawing capability, rather than a dedicated handwriting notebook. Its official documentation describes it as a free, open-source, offline-first notes app available on Linux. On desktop, drawing is provided through its Freehand Drawing plugin; the documentation says drawings can be made with a stylus or touchscreen and are saved as SVG resources. Consider it when typed notes and occasional drawings belong together, and confirm the plugin suits your workflow.

Check these things before moving your notes
- Confirm installation for your distribution. Use the app’s current project instructions and check that the package or delivery format is supported on your Linux system.
- Test your input device. Write with the intended stylus or tablet, including pressure-sensitive strokes, hardware buttons, touch navigation, and palm behavior if relevant. Xournal++ documents pressure-sensitive tablet support, but that does not guarantee every model or configuration.
- Try a representative document. For PDF work, annotate a copy of a real document, export it, and check that the result is usable. For canvas apps, test importing and exporting the kinds of images or documents you actually use.
- Check what the app saves. Identify the native format and export formats, then make a backup and confirm you can reopen the note. With Xournal++, keep each source PDF with its
.xoppnote. - Decide how synchronization fits. If sync is offered or required, verify the current supported workflow and separately plan for recoverable backups.
