For smoother Microsoft Office handoffs, set LibreOffice’s default save format separately for Writer, Calc, and Impress. Choose Word, Excel, or PowerPoint formats as needed, then use Save As when a particular file needs a different format. These settings make the output format more predictable; they cannot guarantee that complex documents will look or behave identically in Office.
Set a Microsoft Office default for each LibreOffice app
LibreOffice’s default format is OpenDocument. If the people receiving your files expect Microsoft Office formats, change the default for each relevant application in Tools > Options > Load/Save > General. On macOS, the equivalent path starts at LibreOffice > Preferences. - Open Tools > Options > Load/Save > General, or LibreOffice > Preferences > Load/Save > General on macOS.
- In the default file-format area, choose the document type and the desired default save format.
- Set Writer, Calc, and Impress independently. Writer handles Word files such as

Choose the Microsoft format that matches the recipients’ needs and the kind of document. Changing the default is not a restriction: a particular document can still be saved in another format.

Choose defaults based on who will edit the files
Use the defaults as a convenience for routine work, not as a claim that one format is universally better. If recipients can work with OpenDocument files, keeping LibreOffice’s ODF defaults is a reasonable option. If Office users need files in their usual formats, select the corresponding Microsoft format for the document types you share. Use Save As for one-off format changes
When only one file needs a different format, use File > Save As and select the file type in the dialog. This avoids changing the default behavior for later documents. LibreOffice also offers a warning when a document is saved in a format other than ODF or the selected default. Consider enabling Warn when not saving in ODF or default format under Load/Save > General if a reminder would help prevent an unintended format choice. Check VBA-dependent Excel files separately
If a workbook relies on Excel Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), inspect Load/Save > VBA Properties. LibreOffice says recent versions can run some Excel Visual Basic scripts when its VBA feature is enabled, but compatibility is limited. Microsoft Office uses VBA, while LibreOffice uses Basic based on the LibreOffice API; their objects and methods differ. Do not assume that every VBA macro will run unchanged after opening or saving a workbook in LibreOffice. Expect to inspect complex files after conversion
A Microsoft Office save format improves format consistency, but conversion can still alter complex documents. LibreOffice Help says some layout features and formatting attributes are handled differently or unsupported, so converted files may need manual reformatting. Its guidance is that “The amount of reformatting that can be expected is proportional to the complexity of the structure and formatting of the source document.” LibreOffice Help: About Converting Microsoft Office Documents

Use Document Converter for a different task
File > Wizards > Document Converter is a workflow for converting a folder of documents toward OpenDocument formats. It is useful for a batch migration, but it is not a setting that improves Microsoft Office export fidelity. LibreOffice Help: XML File Formats
