Which Laravel Hosting Option Fits: Cloud, Forge, or Your Own VPS?

Laravel Cloud manages hosting, Forge automates server provisioning while retaining server access, and a self-hosted VPS puts setup and ongoing operations in your hands.

Choose Laravel Cloud for managed hosting, Laravel Forge when you want automated server setup but still need server access, or a self-hosted VPS when you want direct control and can handle the ongoing operations. The right fit depends on how much server work your team can own, what your application needs, and the full cost of its resources—not just the advertised plan price.

How Cloud, Forge, and a self-hosted VPS differ

Option What you get Control and operations Scaling Best fit
Laravel Cloud Managed hosting platform with managed resources. Laravel manages the infrastructure; you do not manage operating systems or server instances. Laravel describes automatic scaling and scale-to-zero for supported Cloud resources. Teams that prioritize managed operations and an integrated platform.
Laravel Forge A service for provisioning and managing servers at an infrastructure provider or through Laravel VPS. Forge automates provisioning and common server configuration, while you retain SSH/root access and manage the server lifecycle. You manage capacity through instance resizing or provider tools. Teams that want server access and configuration control, with provisioning automation.
Self-hosted VPS VPS infrastructure; you provide the deployment and maintenance setup. You configure and maintain the server, application services, deployments, security, and backups. You design and manage scaling. Teams that need direct infrastructure control and can own ongoing operations.

This reflects Laravel’s published product descriptions, not a comparative test of uptime, performance, or cost for your application. See Laravel’s Cloud-versus-Forge comparison and Cloud-versus-VPS comparison.

What should you choose?

Choose Laravel Cloud for less server administration

Cloud is the clearest fit when you prefer Laravel to manage the infrastructure and value managed resources and automatic scaling over direct access to the underlying server. Check that the current runtime and services support your application before committing. Laravel’s Cloud overview and deployment guide describe the platform and deployment process.

Choose Forge for automation with server access

Forge sits between fully managed hosting and doing everything yourself: it automates provisioning and common server setup, while leaving you access to the machine and responsibility for managing its lifecycle. It suits teams that want to choose an infrastructure provider or customize their server without building every provisioning step from scratch. Budget for both the Forge subscription and the infrastructure bill. See the Forge overview.

Choose a self-hosted VPS for direct control

A self-hosted VPS makes sense when a specialized configuration or direct infrastructure control matters enough to justify owning setup and maintenance. That includes application deployment, system updates, security, backups, and scaling. Laravel’s deployment documentation outlines considerations for deploying Laravel applications.

How the pricing models work

As listed on Laravel’s official pricing pages on 2026-10-07, Cloud used a plan fee plus usage charges, while Forge charged a subscription separate from cloud-provider infrastructure costs. These are dated listings, not guaranteed current prices; check the pages for live terms.

Service Published listing observed 2026-10-07 What is included or billed separately
Laravel Cloud Starter: $5/month plus usage; Growth: $20/month plus usage. Starter included $5 in monthly usage credits. The pricing page described a free first month on Starter.
Laravel Forge Hobby: $12/month; Growth: $19/month; Business: $39/month. Subscription is separate from cloud-provider charges, according to Forge’s published FAQ.
Self-hosted VPS Not stated as a single price; it depends on provider, configuration, and usage. Account for infrastructure and related operating costs.

Check Laravel’s Cloud pricing page and Forge pricing page before making a budget: plan details, credits, and billing terms can change. A plan price by itself is not a like-for-like comparison.

How to compare total cost fairly

Model the same application and workload on each option. Include compute, database, cache, storage, bandwidth, backups, monitoring, and the team’s time for setup and maintenance. For Forge and a self-hosted VPS, include ongoing server costs where applicable; for Cloud, estimate resource usage and account for the effect of scale-to-zero on supported resources.

  • Match regions, instance sizes, storage, data transfer, database arrangements, and support assumptions.
  • Include services you would otherwise operate separately, such as backups and monitoring.
  • Account for staff time: a lower infrastructure bill can still require more operational effort.
  • Compare expected usage patterns, including periods of low or no activity, rather than relying on a single peak-load estimate.

Laravel’s published pages do not provide a universal workload or a like-for-like total-cost calculation, so they do not establish one option as always cheaper.

Application compatibility and provider choice

Laravel’s comparison describes Cloud as supporting Laravel and Symfony, and Forge as supporting Laravel and other PHP applications; its examples include WordPress, Statamic, Node.js, Nuxt, and Next.js. Runtime and configuration support can change, so verify the exact requirements for your application in the current Cloud deployment guide or product documentation.

Forge materials identify DigitalOcean, Vultr, Hetzner, AWS, and other providers as infrastructure options. Those names are not comparable price quotes: compare equivalent instance sizes, regions, storage, data transfer, support, and database arrangements for your workload.

A practical decision checklist

  • Prefer managed infrastructure and less server work? Start with Cloud, then verify runtime and service compatibility.
  • Need SSH/root access or provider choice, but want provisioning automation? Consider Forge and add both its subscription and infrastructure charges to your budget.
  • Need specialized server control and have capacity to operate it? Consider a self-hosted VPS, with responsibility for deployment, updates, security, backups, and scaling included in the decision.

Laravel’s deployment guide characterizes Cloud as a fully managed, autoscaling deployment platform and Forge as a VPS server-management platform for developers who want to manage their own servers with help configuring application services. These are Laravel’s descriptions of its offerings, not independent comparative performance findings.
