Choose based on what you read
Mostly novels and straightforward text
Start with the Kindle or Paperwhite. If compactness and simple reading are your priorities, the 2026 Kindle’s small display and portable format are a natural fit. Consider Paperwhite instead if adjustable warm light or water resistance would matter in your routine.

Books where color matters
Consider Colorsoft if you read illustrated books or other color-rich material and want a color display. For ordinary prose, color may not be a deciding feature; weigh it against the other models’ size and features, and compare the exact generation available where you live.
#1 Best Overall
- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
Reading with handwriting or more page space
Choose Scribe if you want to write notes by hand with the included pen or prefer a larger reading area. It is a different use case from a compact, reading-first Kindle. Check the exact model’s storage and included features rather than assuming all Scribe listings are identical.
What to check before ordering
- Generation: Amazon’s catalog lists 2026 Kindle, Paperwhite and Colorsoft families alongside 2024 and earlier devices. Confirm the release year and model name; this is especially important when choosing a case or other model-specific accessory.
- Marketplace and availability: Listings and stock can differ by country, and launches may arrive at different times. Check your local Amazon marketplace for the exact model currently offered. Recent launch coverage noted staggered availability, but live stock and pricing are not established here (Tom’s Guide).
- Storage and editions: Compare the capacity and edition stated on the listing, not just the family name. Amazon lists more than one version for some families.
- Kids bundles: Covers and subscription terms can vary by model and market. Verify what the local listing actually includes.
- Price: Compare current local listings at purchase time. Earlier published buying-guide prices refer to older models and should not be treated as current (TechRadar’s comparison).
For model identification and generation listings, consult Amazon’s Kindle software security update page alongside the device specifications. Product names can recur across generations, so match accessories to the exact device rather than relying on “Kindle” or “Paperwhite” alone.
