The right KeePass alternative depends on what you want to change: KeePassXC suits people who want a local encrypted database with a different desktop workflow; Bitwarden and Proton Pass are options to consider if you want a hosted account and managed sync; and 1Password is a commercial option to assess against your day-to-day needs. None is proven universally safer or better than KeePass by the product documentation cited here.
What “better than KeePass” means
KeePass-style password managers store credentials in an encrypted database file that you control. That can give you direct control over where the vault lives, but you are responsible for arranging sync, backups, and access across devices. KeePassXC describes its database as an offline encrypted KDBX file that can be kept in a location you choose, including private or public cloud storage. KeePassXC project homepage and KeePassXC user guide.

A hosted password manager shifts some of that operational work to an account-based service. That may be more convenient across devices, but means evaluating the vendor’s service, recovery options, supported platforms, and policies as well as its security documentation. “Better” is therefore a fit question: local control and portability versus managed sync and account features.
Which alternatives are worth considering?
| Option | Storage and sync model | Why it may fit | What the cited material establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| KeePassXC | Local encrypted KDBX file; you choose its storage location and manage synchronization. | You want an open-source desktop app and local-first control, but want KeePassXC’s particular features and workflow. | The project describes support for Windows, macOS, and Linux, browser integration, TOTP, attachments, entry history, SSH-agent support, and YubiKey/OnlyKey challenge-response. KeePassXC project homepage and KeePassXC user guide. |
| Bitwarden | Hosted account option; the vendor also says users can host the stack themselves. | You want to evaluate managed vault sync or prefer operating a compatible server stack. | Bitwarden says data is encrypted or hashed before leaving the local device. KeePass documentation lists Bitwarden as an import source. Bitwarden security FAQ and KeePass 2.x import documentation. |
| Proton Pass | Hosted account option. | You want a documented route from KeePass or KeePassXC to a hosted password manager. | Proton publishes a KeePass/KeePassXC import guide and says each field in items users create is end-to-end encrypted. Proton import guide. |
| 1Password | Commercial hosted option. | You are considering a paid service and want to compare its security approach and export tools with your workflow. | Its security page describes end-to-end encryption, AES-GCM-256, optional telemetry, and export tools. The cited material does not establish its current KeePass import route or a comparable price. 1Password security page. |
KeePassXC: change the app, not the local-file model
KeePassXC is an open-source desktop password manager for Windows, macOS, and Linux, not a hosted service that automatically syncs through an account. Its documented features include browser integration, passkey support through browser integration, database reports, TOTP, attachments, entry history, SSH-agent support, and YubiKey/OnlyKey challenge-response. A hardware key is an optional configuration, not a requirement for every user. KeePassXC project homepage and KeePassXC user guide.

The project reports that version 2.7.9 received France’s ANSSI First-level Security Certification (CSPN). That certification fact applies to the stated version and scope; it should not be generalized to every KeePassXC release or to KeePass-compatible applications as a whole. The project lists version 2.7.12 as released March 10, 2026, and 2.8.0-beta1 as released September 23, 2026. Beta functionality should not be assumed to be part of a stable release. KeePassXC project homepage.
Bitwarden: consider it for hosted sync or self-hosting
Bitwarden is relevant if you want to compare an account-based service with your current file-based routine, or if you prefer to operate the Bitwarden stack yourself. Its security FAQ describes the company’s own approach: data is encrypted or hashed before it leaves the local device, and users can host the stack themselves. These are vendor statements about its architecture, not proof that it cannot be breached or an independent comparison with KeePass. Bitwarden security FAQ.

- FIDO CTAP 2.1 for enhanced security features (e.g. resident credentials, Passkey support) and backwards compatibility with CTAP 2. FIDO2 L2 certified security for phishing resistant protection against identity theft and unauthorized access.
Proton Pass: consider it when a documented KeePass import matters
Proton’s import guide specifically covers KeePass and KeePassXC. Proton says each field in items users create is end-to-end encrypted. Treat that as Proton’s description of its service; check the current guide and your account’s available features when deciding whether it fits. Proton import guide.

1Password: assess the commercial workflow, not a presumed security win
1Password’s security page describes end-to-end encryption and AES-GCM-256, along with optional telemetry and export tools. Those details make it a candidate for a workflow comparison, but the cited page does not establish a current KeePass import route, directly comparable price, or head-to-head security result. 1Password security page.

- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
How to choose without assuming a universal winner
- Choose a local-first workflow if keeping the encrypted database file under your control matters more than having a provider manage sync. Decide how you will synchronize it safely and keep backups you can restore.
- Consider a hosted service if account-based access across devices is the main problem you want to solve. Compare its recovery process, supported devices and browsers, sharing, and emergency-access options before moving the vault.
- Check portability both ways. Look at what the importer brings across and what the service can export. Do not assume attachments, custom fields, URLs, or TOTP data will transfer identically.
- Separate security evidence from claims. Product documentation describes architecture; a certification or audit has a defined scope; neither alone establishes that one product is universally safer for every user and setup.
- Verify current plan limits and regional prices. The cited product pages do not provide a single comparable current price table or enough information to establish matching free-plan limits.
How to migrate a KeePass vault safely
- Make a protected backup of the original database. Keep it somewhere access-controlled and confirm that you can open it before changing anything.
- Use the destination’s official importer when available. KeePassXC documents imports from CSV, 1Password, Bitwarden, Proton Pass, and KeePass1; Proton documents a KeePass/KeePassXC import route; KeePass 2.x documents multiple importers. The supported sources and item types differ by application. KeePassXC user guide, Proton import guide, and KeePass 2.x import documentation.
- Validate the imported vault before relying on it. Check a representative set of entries, URLs, attachments, custom fields, and TOTP data against the original. Resolve missing or changed items before treating the migration as complete.
- Protect any export file as if it were the vault itself. KeePassXC warns that CSV and several other export formats—including 1Password, Bitwarden, and Proton Pass exports—are unencrypted. Keep them out of public or synced folders, avoid leaving them in Downloads, and securely delete them after validating the destination. KeePassXC user guide.
What the security evidence can—and cannot—tell you
KeePass documents key derivation using a random salt and a configurable work factor intended to increase the effort required for guessing attacks. It also notes that some operations require sensitive data to be present unencrypted in process memory. KeePass security documentation.
KeePassXC’s reported CSPN certification is tied to version 2.7.9. Bitwarden, Proton, and 1Password describe their own encryption and data handling on vendor pages. Those documents help explain design choices, but do not constitute a single independent head-to-head test proving that one product is safest. A strong master password, a protected recovery method, timely updates, and a secure device remain important whichever model you choose.
