Which Jellyfin Settings Should You Change First? A Safe Setup Order

Secure Jellyfin’s administrator account, organize libraries and permissions, review remote access, then check playback mode before changing transcoding or hardware acceleration.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by securing the administrator account, setting up libraries and metadata, and reviewing how people can reach the server. Next, tailor each user’s permissions and remote-stream limits. Only change transcoding or hardware-acceleration settings after checking what a real playback session is doing: the right choices depend on your server and the client playing the file.

1. Secure the administrator account and set up libraries

During the setup wizard, create an administrator account with a strong, unique password. Add the folders that contain your media, then choose the default metadata language and region. You can customize the metadata language for individual libraries later. Jellyfin’s setup wizard walkthrough describes these initial choices.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

If a folder does not appear in the picker, check whether the Jellyfin server process has permission to read it. A folder can exist on the computer and still be inaccessible to the server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Decide how the server can be reached

The setup wizard’s Allow remote access to this server option is for people who want to use Jellyfin away from home. Enabling it does not by itself make remote access safe or configure a secure network. Jellyfin’s hardware guidance says the server is not designed to be exposed directly to the internet, so make sure your remote-access setup is appropriately secured before allowing connections from outside your home network.

  • Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
  • Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
  • Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Leave automatic port mapping off unless you specifically need it. It relies on UPnP, which Jellyfin flags as a security concern, and the project recommends disabling the option otherwise. See the setup wizard guidance and hardware recommendations.

3. Set permissions for each user

In Dashboard > Users, give each account access only to the libraries and devices its user needs. Jellyfin’s user controls can also restrict remote connections, playback that requires transcoding, media deletion, and access by parental rating or tags. You can set access schedules, impose a per-stream internet bitrate limit, and hide a new user from login screens by default. The Jellyfin user-management documentation describes these controls.

4. Review interface and privacy settings

Under General settings, you can change the server name, login disclaimer, splash-screen image, and custom CSS. The server name appears when users select a server. Consider the splash image carefully: Jellyfin says it may appear on login screens before authentication and is generated from server content, so it could reveal what is in your library. 5. Check playback before changing transcoding

Play a representative file, then check the dashboard’s playback information to see whether Jellyfin is using Direct Play, Remux, Direct Stream, or Transcode. These modes indicate how much work the server is doing:

  • Direct Play: The client receives the file as-is, with almost no additional server load.
  • Remux: Jellyfin changes the container while leaving the audio and video streams intact.
  • Direct Stream: Jellyfin transcodes audio while preserving the video stream.
  • Transcode: Jellyfin processes the video, generally making this the most demanding mode for the server.

For local media, the client reports capabilities such as codecs, resolution, and bitrate constraints. Jellyfin uses them to select an output the client can handle; the documentation does not provide a manual resolution override. Start by checking whether the client supports the file’s format and whether its playback constraints are triggering conversion. If the server also runs other workloads, leave the transcoding thread-count setting alone unless you have a specific reason to adjust it. The transcoding documentation explains the playback modes and selection process.

6. Enable hardware acceleration only when the system supports it

Hardware acceleration is not a universal performance switch. It depends on the GPU, operating system, drivers, and Jellyfin’s transcoder setup. Jellyfin documents Intel QSV, NVIDIA NVENC/NVDEC, AMD AMF, Linux VA-API, macOS VideoToolbox, and Linux Rockchip RKMPP among its supported methods. Requirements differ by platform and method, so check the current instructions for your exact combination before enabling one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Jellyfin recommends using its jellyfin-ffmpeg build; another FFmpeg binary may provide only partial acceleration. After configuring acceleration, test with an actual transcode and verify activity with the monitoring tools for your platform. The hardware acceleration guidance covers supported methods and setup considerations.

HDR-to-SDR tone-mapping

If an HDR video must be converted to SDR for a client, tone-mapping is needed and can be demanding. Jellyfin recommends a GPU for this work. Its documentation says the described transcoding path does not currently support HDR-to-HDR tone-mapping or passing HDR metadata through; software tone-mapping can also be very slow. Check current platform-specific support before selecting hardware or changing tone-mapping options. See Jellyfin’s transcoding documentation and hardware guidance.

7. Treat network and hardware figures as planning guidance

Jellyfin’s hardware recommendations offer starting points, not requirements every server must meet. The documentation does not state a publication year for these figures, so they should be read as the project’s current published guidance rather than as dated benchmarks.

Planning item Jellyfin’s published recommendation How to use it
Remote upload bandwidth At least 20 Mbps upload bandwidth Compare with the upload capacity available where the server is hosted and the needs of remote streams.
Remote bitrate limit When total upload is below 100 Mbps, set the Jellyfin bandwidth limit to 70% of total upload speed Use the per-stream limit in user settings to avoid assigning all available upload capacity to Jellyfin.
Memory 8 GB RAM generally; 4 GB may be enough for Linux without a GUI Consider the operating system, other services, and expected workload.
SSD space 100 GB for the operating system, Jellyfin files, and transcoding cache Consider more on Windows 11 or when many large files need transcoding.
Network connection Ethernet is recommended A wired connection is a planning preference for the server, not a setting that guarantees a particular playback result.

These are project recommendations, not universal minimums. Actual needs depend on how many streams run at once, whether clients can play files directly, and what else the server does. Jellyfin also names Intel N100 among recommended integrated-graphics CPU options, but that is not a blanket reason to replace working hardware; assess your actual playback workload first. See Jellyfin’s hardware guidance.
