There is no universal iSCSI NIC count, speed, VLAN plan, MTU, or topology. Configure for the specific hypervisor, storage array, adapters, switches, and supported storage protocol.
Start with path reliability, not a particular MTU
An iSCSI path is only useful if the initiator, network, and target can use it as intended. Multiple host interfaces alone do not prove that storage is correctly multipathed: the host’s path configuration, target portals, and physical uplink and switch layout must agree. Check that the paths intended to provide redundancy do not all depend on the same NIC, switch, or other failure point.
Isolation can be physical or logical. Dedicated adapters and switches may help separate storage traffic and failure domains; VLANs and traffic controls can separate storage from other traffic on converged Ethernet. Choose based on security, expected load, capacity, failure domains, and vendor support rather than assuming that every deployment needs dedicated physical infrastructure.
Microsoft Learn puts the security and performance rationale this way: “To provide the most consistent performance and functionality and to improve network security, isolate the different types of network traffic.” Its Hyper-V cluster guidance also documents converged Ethernet with VLAN isolation and QoS, so isolation does not necessarily mean separate physical switches.

Choose isolation or convergence for the actual workload
| Design choice | What it can provide | What to validate |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated storage network | Physical separation of storage traffic and, when designed accordingly, separate network failure domains. | Whether NICs, switches, target ports, and paths are genuinely independent; available bandwidth; and vendor support. |
| Converged Ethernet | Shared physical infrastructure for different traffic types, with logical separation and traffic controls. | VLAN isolation, QoS, redundancy, expected storage load, and whether shared links can meet the workload’s needs. |
Microsoft’s Hyper-V cluster guidance calls for planning network redundancy, traffic isolation, and QoS. It describes minimum-bandwidth weighting for converged cluster traffic; its example recommendation includes a weight of 40 for storage. That is an example value, not a universal performance setting. If System Center Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) manages the cluster, Microsoft directs administrators to use VMM for the documented configuration.
A dedicated, non-oversubscribed iSCSI LAN is recommended in Hitachi’s VMware 10/25 GbE reference architecture. That is relevant to that architecture, not a rule for every hypervisor or array.

On ESXi, use software iSCSI port binding only when the topology qualifies
Port binding is a topology-dependent ESXi software iSCSI setting, not a general-purpose way to add redundancy. Broadcom specifies binding when multiple iSCSI VMkernel ports connect to an array that broadcasts a single target IP and the initiator ports share a subnet, broadcast domain, and vSwitch. The bound configuration also requires a one-to-one mapping between VMkernel ports and physical NIC ports.
When binding fits
- The target and initiator layout meets Broadcom’s shared-subnet and shared-broadcast-domain conditions.
- The bound VMkernel ports share a vSwitch.
- Each bound VMkernel port maps to its own physical NIC port in the supported configuration.
- For multiple iSCSI VLANs, Broadcom specifies separate vSwitches.
Broadcom’s ESXi 8.x multi-NIC example uses two VMkernel ports on separate physical uplinks. Each port group has one uplink active and the other unused, then the port groups are bound to the software iSCSI adapter. Broadcom warns that active-active or active-standby uplink policies can disallow binding in that setup.

When binding does not fit
Broadcom says not to bind when initiator and target ports are in different subnets or broadcast domains. An incorrect binding topology can cause slow rescans, incorrect or missing paths, inaccessible storage, path-redundancy alerts, and longer host reboot times. Check the target portal layout and Broadcom’s requirements before changing the adapter configuration.
Do not use LACP or other link aggregation as a substitute for ESXi software iSCSI multipathing. Broadcom’s guidance is that software multipathing expects one uplink per VMkernel port. These are ESXi software iSCSI rules; do not apply them as if they were general Hyper-V instructions.

On Hyper-V, design isolation, redundancy, and QoS together
Microsoft’s cluster guidance allows storage traffic to use multiple physical or logical networks and supports either isolated or converged Ethernet designs. In a converged design, use VLANs to separate traffic logically and QoS to control competing workloads; verify that the network also has the required redundancy. The suitable design depends on the cluster, expected traffic, physical network, and storage protocol.
For Windows Server Hyper-V deployments, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance says LBFO NIC teaming is deprecated as of Windows Server 2022 and directs readers to Switch Embedded Teaming (SET). Follow the documentation for the Windows Server release actually deployed. Microsoft’s note that NIC teaming may be incompatible with RDMA for SMB Direct is SMB-specific; it should not be treated as an iSCSI configuration rule.

Keep VLAN, routing, and MTU consistent end to end
Microsoft’s Windows Server iSCSI troubleshooting checklist flags mismatched VLAN, MTU, and Jumbo Frame settings as causes of connectivity problems. Check the host adapter, switches, and storage interfaces along each intended path rather than verifying a setting on the host alone. Confirm that the iSCSI, management, and client networks are segregated and correctly routed for the design.
Jumbo frames are optional, not an automatic requirement. Hitachi’s VMware 10/25 GbE reference architecture describes increasing payload MTU from 1,500 to 9,000 as a possible throughput measure for that architecture. Those values are configuration examples, not measured performance results or a general prescription. Use a larger MTU only if every component on the path supports the selected value and connectivity has been validated end to end.
For ESXi, Broadcom notes that each VMkernel gets a routing-table entry and does not recommend overriding a VMkernel default gateway unless Layer 3 connectivity is required, in the context of its multi-NIC port-binding guidance. Check the routing behavior against the actual topology rather than adding gateways as a blanket fix.
Validate the design before relying on it
- Inventory the supported configuration. Record the hypervisor and version, iSCSI initiator type, array and controller, target portals, adapters, drivers, firmware, and applicable vendor support requirements.
- Draw each intended path. Trace host initiator to target, including NIC, switch, VLAN, subnet, routing, and any shared failure points. Confirm that redundant paths are genuinely independent enough for the failure they are meant to tolerate.
- Check protocol-specific multipathing. On ESXi software iSCSI, verify every port-binding condition before binding. On Hyper-V, follow guidance for the actual Windows Server release and storage protocol.
- Verify network consistency. Check VLAN and MTU behavior across every hop, and confirm that routing matches the design. Do not rely on jumbo frames until the entire path supports the selected MTU and validation succeeds.
- Check failover using supported tools. Validate path visibility and failover behavior using the hypervisor’s and array’s supported tools and policies before treating the configuration as redundant.
- Confirm current support levels. Microsoft’s troubleshooting checklist advises checking current vendor-supported network-adapter and storage-controller or array firmware and drivers.
- Review Hyper-V management and QoS. Decide whether dedicated or converged networking meets the cluster’s isolation, redundancy, and traffic-control needs. If VMM manages the cluster, use its documented procedures.
Use vendor guidance for values the platform does not prescribe
There is no evidence-based universal setting for NIC speed, adapter count, VLAN numbering, MTU, or multipath policy across hypervisor storage deployments. Use the current documentation and support matrix for the installed hypervisor, array, NICs, drivers, firmware, and switches. A compatible additional Ethernet adapter may be appropriate when the design calls for another physical path, but the guidance here establishes no required speed or model.
