Cat 8 is the fastest cited category for balanced twisted-pair Ethernet: it supports 40GBASE-T at up to 40 Gb/s over a maximum 30 m link. For a 10 Gb/s connection that needs to reach as far as 100 m, Cat 6A is the more relevant option. Either way, cable category alone cannot make a network run faster than its ports and equipment support.
What “fastest Ethernet cable” means
This answer compares balanced twisted-pair structured cabling, commonly called copper Ethernet cabling. It does not rank every Ethernet medium: Ethernet also operates over fiber and other media. Within this copper-cabling scope, the key comparison is the data rate a category supports and the distance for which that rate is specified.

Cat 8: the highest cited rate, over a short link
IEEE’s 802.3bq-2016 listing specifies 40GBASE-T at up to 40 Gb/s over a maximum 30 m of balanced twisted-pair structured cabling (IEEE 802.3bq-2016). UL Solutions likewise describes Category 8 transmission performance for 25GBASE-T and 40GBASE-T, up to 2 GHz, with a maximum length of 30 m (UL Solutions).
That makes Cat 8 the answer when “fastest” means the highest cited data rate over a short twisted-pair link. The 40 Gb/s figure is not a 100 m capability; the specified maximum reach is 30 m. A Cat 8 cable is useful only if the equipment at both ends can establish a compatible 25 or 40 Gb/s link.

- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
Cat 6A: a longer-reach 10 Gb/s option
For a run where distance matters more than the short-link 25/40 Gb/s ceiling, Cat 6A is a practical comparison. Eaton lists Cat 6A at 10 Gb/s over 100 m, while its comparison lists Cat 8 at 25/40 Gb/s over 30 m (Eaton’s category comparison). The cited figures describe different distance-and-rate use cases, not a claim that Cat 6A is faster than Cat 8.

Check your equipment before buying
A cable category does not determine the speed of the whole connection. Both endpoint ports and the intervening network equipment must support the intended rate, and the installed channel must meet the applicable requirements. NETGEAR’s guidance recommends choosing cable in line with the multi-gig speeds supported by the ISP or wired devices (NETGEAR’s cable-selection guidance); that is manufacturer advice, not a substitute for checking the specifications of your own equipment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Identify the required rate. Check the Ethernet port specifications on both devices and any switch or router between them. If they do not support 25 or 40 Gb/s, a Cat 8 cable will not supply those rates.
- Measure the full link. Compare the required run length with the cited limits: 30 m for the Cat 8 25/40GBASE-T figures, or 100 m for the Cat 6A 10 Gb/s comparison.
- Choose the matching category and installation. For a compatible short 25/40 Gb/s link, look for Cat 8; for a longer 10 Gb/s run, Cat 6A matches the cited 100 m comparison. Confirm that the complete installed channel meets applicable requirements.
What a faster cable will—and will not—change
Choosing a higher category does not upgrade a router, computer, switch, or other port that supports a lower rate. Nor does the category alone establish that an internet connection will become faster: the service and every relevant network link must support the higher speed. The useful question is therefore not simply which cable has the largest number on its label, but which cable and installation match the desired rate, distance, and endpoint equipment.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Cat 8 Speed, Cat 5/5e Value Enjoy Cat 8 Ethernet cable performance at a Cat 5/5e-level value. With up to 40Gbps speed and 2000MHz bandwidth, this high speed internet cable delivers more bandwidth than standard Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, helping support smooth gaming, streaming, video calls, large file transfers and everyday wired network use.
