For smoother play, use Game Mode with supported full-screen games on iOS 18 or later. To extend battery life, lower screen brightness, use Wi-Fi when practical, and check Settings > Battery to find what is draining power. Treat Low Power Mode as a battery-saving tradeoff: it can slow some tasks and caps ProMotion displays at 60 frames per second.
Which settings help gaming performance?
Use Game Mode for supported games
Apple says Game Mode gives a supported game highest-priority access to the iPhone’s CPU and GPU while reducing background-task use. It can improve frame consistency and responsiveness; for supported wireless controllers and AirPods, it also doubles Bluetooth sampling. Apple describes these as qualitative benefits, not a guaranteed frame-rate increase.

Game Mode requires iOS 18 or later and a supported game. It turns on automatically when that game enters full screen. To check or change it, open the game full screen, open Control Center and Game Overlay, then select Controls > Game Mode. See Apple’s Use Game Mode on iPhone.
Do not treat Low Power Mode as a performance boost
Low Power Mode reduces power use, but Apple warns that some tasks may run more slowly. On iPhones with ProMotion, it limits display refresh to 60 frames per second, which can make scrolling or supported gameplay feel less smooth. Turn it on when extra runtime matters more than peak smoothness, rather than leaving it on as a default gaming tweak.

Which settings can extend gaming battery life?
Adjust brightness and connectivity
- Lower brightness to a level that remains comfortable. The display is a direct, adjustable part of power use.
- Use Wi-Fi instead of cellular when practical; Apple says Wi-Fi uses less power than cellular.
- Play where cellular reception is strong. A weak signal can contribute to higher battery use. If you need cellular data, 5G Auto can switch to LTE when 5G does not provide a noticeable experience improvement.
These steps can reduce power use without deliberately lowering the game’s display refresh rate as Low Power Mode does. Keep the connection appropriate for the game: online play still needs a reliable network.

Use Adaptive Power only if your iPhone supports it
Adaptive Power requires iOS 26 or later and is available only on supported models. Depending on the device and settings, it can make performance adjustments, slightly lower brightness, limit background activity, and turn on Low Power Mode when the battery reaches 20 percent. Apple says Adaptive Power does not manage performance during maximum-performance tasks such as games running with Game Mode. Before changing several settings at once, use the Battery screen to identify the likely cause. Open Settings > Battery and review daily usage alongside app and system activity. The breakdown can help distinguish heavy screen time from background activity, notifications, or poor cellular coverage.

If drain is unexpected, Apple’s guidance on If the battery in your iPhone or iPad drains too quickly explains how to review usage and settings. An app with substantial background activity may warrant a targeted change; reducing brightness will not address a network or background-activity cause.

Aging batteries can hold less charge and may be less able to deliver peak power. Check Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging on iPhone 14 and earlier, or Settings > Battery > Battery Health on iPhone 15 and later.

Apple’s 2026 guidance says batteries in iPhone 14 and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions; for iPhone 15 models, the design figure is 80% after 1,000 cycles under ideal conditions. These are not guarantees of an individual phone’s capacity: actual results depend on use and charging. If the Battery Health screen indicates Service or significant degradation, follow Apple’s service guidance through Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider. See iPhone battery and performance.
