Which iPhone Audio Settings and Connections Sound Best for You?

Improve iPhone listening by matching Apple Music quality, wired or Bluetooth playback, EQ, Dolby Atmos and accessibility settings to your setup.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best iPhone audio setup depends on what you listen to and how: Apple Music Lossless preserves more audio data over a wired connection, while EQ, Sound Check, Dolby Atmos and accessibility controls change the sound or make it easier to hear. Lossless is not a guaranteed audible upgrade for everyone, and Bluetooth does not transmit it losslessly.

Turn on Apple Music Lossless

To change Apple Music streaming and download quality, open Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality, turn on Lossless Audio, then choose the quality for streaming and downloads. Apple lists Lossless up to 24-bit/48 kHz and Hi-Res Lossless up to 24-bit/192 kHz. Apple’s iPhone guidance notes that playback above 48 kHz requires an external digital-to-analog converter (DAC).

You do not need a DAC for standard Lossless playback. Apple supports lossless playback through wired headphones, receivers, powered speakers and the iPhone’s built-in speakers. If you want Hi-Res Lossless above 48 kHz, check that your DAC and the rest of the wired audio chain support the desired format.

Tracks downloaded before you enabled Lossless remain at their original download quality. Delete a track and download it again after turning Lossless on to get its lossless version.

Choose quality with data, storage and listening equipment in mind

Lossless streaming uses significantly more cellular or Wi-Fi data than standard streaming, and lossless downloads take significantly more storage. Higher resolutions use more data still. If you have a limited data plan or little free space, use a lower streaming quality on cellular and reserve higher-quality downloads for Wi-Fi.

Apple says the difference between AAC and lossless is virtually indistinguishable. Treat Lossless as a way to preserve the original audio data—not a promise that every listener will hear a difference. The quality you receive while streaming also depends on the song’s availability, network conditions and the connected headphones or speakers.

Option What to expect Useful when
Standard Apple Music quality Uses less data and storage than Lossless. You prioritize convenience, have a limited data plan, or do not hear a difference on your setup.
Lossless, up to 24-bit/48 kHz Preserves lossless audio data; playback does not require an external DAC. You want Lossless and can use a compatible wired connection.
Hi-Res Lossless, up to 24-bit/192 kHz Uses more data at higher resolutions; iPhone playback above 48 kHz requires an external DAC. You have a compatible wired setup and specifically want playback above 48 kHz.

Pick a connection that matches your priorities

Bluetooth is convenient, but Apple states that “Bluetooth connections aren’t lossless.” AirPods and most Beats wireless headphones use Apple’s AAC Bluetooth codec. That limitation does not mean Bluetooth sounds poor; it means it is not a lossless transmission route.

For lossless playback, use a wired connection to compatible headphones, a receiver or powered speakers. Before choosing a cable or adapter, check the iPhone’s connector and confirm that the headphones or audio equipment can connect to it. A DAC is relevant only if you are targeting sample rates above 48 kHz on iPhone.

Adjust EQ, volume consistency and Dolby Atmos

Shape the tone with EQ

For Apple Music, open Settings > Apps > Music > EQ and choose an equalization setting. EQ changes tonal balance to suit your preference; it does not change a track into a lossless file.

Keep track volume more consistent with Sound Check

In Settings > Apps > Music, turn on Sound Check to normalize audio volume. This is also Apple’s recommendation if Dolby Atmos tracks sound quieter than stereo tracks.

  • The USB-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter lets you connect devices that use a standard 3.5mm audio plug - like headphones or speakers - to your USB-C devices
  • Works with all devices that have a USB-C connector and support iOS 10 or later.

Try Dolby Atmos as an alternate presentation

Selected Apple Music songs are available in Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos. Go to Settings > Apps > Music > Dolby Atmos and choose Automatic, Always On or Off. Apple recommends Always On when you use wired headphones. Atmos is a content-dependent listening option, not a higher-fidelity replacement for stereo; choose the presentation you prefer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Personalize audio for hearing and balance

For supported Apple and Beats headphones, open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Headphone Accommodations. The feature can boost selected frequencies or amplify soft sounds, and you can choose whether the adjustment applies to calls, media or both.

The same Audio & Visual area includes Mono Audio and a left-right balance slider. Mono Audio combines the stereo channels; the balance control adjusts their relative levels. These options can help if one side sounds quieter or if you want sound delivered consistently to both sides.

A quick setup by listening goal

  • For convenient everyday listening: Keep Bluetooth if it suits your headphones, and choose a streaming quality that fits your data plan.
  • For lossless playback: Enable Lossless in Audio Quality and use a compatible wired connection; a DAC is not needed for playback up to 48 kHz.
  • For Hi-Res Lossless above 48 kHz: Use a compatible external DAC and wired equipment, and account for the additional data or storage.
  • For a different sound or steadier volume: Adjust EQ or Sound Check; try Dolby Atmos on supported tracks if you prefer its presentation.
  • For clearer media or channel imbalance: Check Headphone Accommodations, Mono Audio and the balance slider under Accessibility.
