Which Image Compression Method Looks Best? A Visual Comparison

There is no universal visual winner: compare the same image at matching dimensions, then weigh visible quality against file size, image type, transparency, and delivery support.

Which image compression method looks best? There is no single winner. Lossless compression keeps image data exactly; lossy compression throws some data away to make a smaller file. Photos often tolerate lossy compression well, while text, thin lines, and sharp-edged graphics can show damage sooner. The practical winner depends on the image, encoder settings, acceptable file size, transparency needs, and where the image must display.

A fair visual comparison should show the same image and dimensions, identify whether files are matched by size or by perceived quality, and include both photographs and graphics. The comparisons below explain what to look for and how to choose a format without mistaking smaller files for better-looking ones.

What a visual comparison should measure

Image formats cannot be ranked fairly by comparing unrelated files or by treating each format’s quality slider as equivalent. Instead, compare the same source image at the same pixel dimensions in two ways:

  • Same file-size target: Compare the visible damage each method produces when the files are about the same size.
  • Similar perceived quality: Decide what appearance is acceptable, then compare the resulting file sizes. State how that judgment was made.

Use at least one continuous-tone photograph and one graphic with text, flat-color regions, thin lines, or sharp edges. Inspect text outlines, color transitions, fine detail, and any halos or blockiness. A lossy file may look fine in a photograph but noticeably degrade colored text or crisp edges; chroma subsampling can contribute to that damage. web.dev’s image-performance guide discusses image optimization and the visual trade-offs involved.

Do not compare quality numbers across formats as if they shared one scale. Encoder implementations and settings matter, and “looks similar” is a human judgment rather than a universal threshold. The available cited sources do not establish an independent, representative head-to-head subjective rating that makes one format the visual winner for every image.

How the main image formats compare

Format Compression and visual fit Transparency and animation Delivery considerations
JPEG Lossy; commonly suited to photographs. Compression can create visible artifacts, especially around detail and edges. No alpha transparency channel. Broadly supported and useful as a fallback for photographs. MDN’s format guide covers its characteristics.
PNG Lossless; useful when exact reproduction matters, including screenshots, diagrams, and line art. Supports transparency; animation is not the reason to choose it in this comparison. Broadly supported. Its lossless approach can produce larger files than a lossy alternative.
WebP Offers both lossy and lossless compression. The lossy mode may suit photographs; lossless can suit graphics where exact pixels matter. Supports transparency and animation, as well as metadata and color profiles. Google reports lossy WebP files 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEGs at equivalent SSIM quality, and lossless WebP 26% smaller than PNG. These are Google’s published comparisons, not guarantees for every image or encoder. Google’s WebP documentation explains the format. For lossless WebP specifically, the IETF says its algorithm stores and restores pixel values exactly, including color values for fully transparent pixels; this does not describe lossy WebP. RFC 9649 is an informational RFC published in 2024.
AVIF Offers lossy and lossless compression and may achieve strong compression. Results vary with image and settings. Support depends on the implementation and delivery context; check the features needed for your workflow. web.dev notes AVIF has less broad support than WebP and recommends considering a fallback approach such as <picture>. See MDN and web.dev for format and delivery guidance.
SVG Vector format rather than a raster compression method. Prefer an actual vector source for diagrams and graphics that must remain accurate at different sizes. Not directly comparable to raster transparency or animation options. Use where the artwork is genuinely vector, rather than rasterizing it and forcing a raster compression contest. MDN’s guide describes image types and uses.

Which method tends to look best for each image

Photographs

Start with a lossy format such as JPEG, lossy WebP, or lossy AVIF, then inspect the result at its intended display size. A photograph’s gradual tones and textures can often tolerate some discarded information, but foliage, hair, gradients, and fine patterns may expose artifacts. Compare files at your target size or compare sizes at a consistent visual standard; do not assume the same quality setting means the same result across encoders.

Text, screenshots, diagrams, and sharp edges

Begin with PNG or a lossless mode when crisp text, clean edges, or exact pixels are important. If file size requires lossy compression, inspect colored text and line edges closely; artifacts can be more obvious there than in a photo. If the source is a diagram or logo available as vector artwork, use SVG rather than a raster version when the delivery context supports it.

Images with transparency or animation

Check that the chosen format and encoder preserve the transparency or animation your workflow needs. JPEG cannot provide alpha transparency. WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, transparency, animation, metadata, and color profiles. Confirm how the image will be consumed before converting; a visually attractive still image is not sufficient if the result drops a required property.

Choose a format for the web without sacrificing fallback support

WebP and AVIF can reduce image bytes, but a smaller file does not automatically look better. For web delivery, test the browsers and applications your audience needs. A <picture> element can offer modern formats while retaining a JPEG fallback:

<picture>
  <source srcset="image.avif" type="image/avif">
  <source srcset="image.webp" type="image/webp">
  <img src="image.jpg" alt="Describe the image">
</picture>

This gives supporting browsers a format choice while the <img> remains the fallback. Confirm that all variants have the same intended crop, dimensions, and meaningful content, and that the fallback is actually available.

What published performance figures do—and do not—show

A 2023 study by Dornauer and Felderer reported a 21% page-load-time improvement for WebP compared with compressed JPEG and a 15% improvement for AVIF compared with compressed JPEG in the study’s evaluated setup. Those are experimental results from that setup, not expected improvements for every website, browser, or image set. The paper also reports that images accounted for 41% of transmitted web-app data in its introduction and that WebP made up 4% of the web-image sample the authors observed. Neither figure should be read as a current global share or a universal present-day measure. See the paper: “Web Image Formats: Assessment of Their Real-World-Usage and Performance across Popular Web Browsers”.

These numbers speak to the study’s performance and sample context, not which format looks best to every viewer. For your own site, measure the actual assets and delivery path you intend to use, and judge visual quality separately from load performance.

A practical comparison workflow

  1. Choose representative originals. Include a photo and a graphic with text, flat colors, or thin edges. Keep each original as the shared source.
  2. Fix dimensions and crop. Export every candidate at the same pixel dimensions so scaling does not confound the comparison.
  3. Make two comparisons. First target similar file sizes and inspect visible differences; then target similar acceptable appearance and compare file sizes.
  4. Inspect at intended use size. Look at the image as readers will see it, and zoom in separately to check fine detail and edge artifacts.
  5. Check required features and compatibility. Verify transparency, animation, metadata, and browser or application support where relevant.
  6. Retain the source and record settings. Save the original and note the encoder, format, settings, dimensions, and output size so a later export can be reproduced.

web.dev recommends trying different compression levels because no single setting suits every image. Tools it names include Squoosh, ImageOptim, and image optimization services; their mention is not a claim that one tool produces the best-looking result for every image. See web.dev’s guidance.

Or skip the browser setup

If the image you need to evaluate is on a web page, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot with one GET request. This is a way to capture the rendered page, not a replacement for comparing image encoders or compression settings. Its documentation covers the API.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Common comparison mistakes and fixes

  • Declaring a winner from one photo: Add a graphic with text or fine edges; image content changes which defects stand out.
  • Comparing files at different dimensions: Re-export at matching dimensions before attributing a size or quality difference to compression.
  • Using the same quality number across formats: Tune each encoder separately and compare either at a common file-size target or a judged appearance target.
  • Choosing only by file size: Inspect the image at its intended display size and check the artifacts that matter for that content.
  • Assuming modern format support is universal: Check the target browsers and provide a fallback with <picture> where appropriate.
  • Overlooking transparency or animation: Verify the output retains required features; JPEG has no alpha transparency channel.
