How to Schedule Different Video Playlists on a Hetzner YouTube Livestream

Schedule the YouTube events separately from the playlists that play on your Hetzner server. YouTube’s scheduled event is a liveBroadcast; the audio and video feed sent by your encoder is a liveStream. Your server-side playout process chooses which files to send and when. The two schedules must line up.

How the YouTube and server schedules fit together

A scheduled YouTube event does not select MP4 files from your server. It defines an event on your channel and receives a live feed. On Hetzner, a media process such as FFmpeg plays the files in the intended order and sends the resulting feed to YouTube.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API represents these as separate resources: a liveBroadcast for the event and a liveStream for the incoming feed. A broadcast is associated with exactly one stream. For events at different times that use the same encoder settings, YouTube documents reusing one stream and binding each scheduled broadcast to it. If events overlap or need different stream settings, use separate stream resources as appropriate. See YouTube’s explanation of broadcasts and streams and its broadcast lifecycle guide.

Plan the playlist schedule before configuring automation

Make one explicit playlist for each programming block

Write the intended file order down in a server-side playlist file or equivalent configuration. Give each block a clear name and associate it with its YouTube event, start time, and time zone. Check that the files open, have usable audio and video, and can be joined by your chosen playout method. File order alone does not ensure a seamless transition: media formats, timestamps, and encoder settings can affect playback.

Decide whether events can share a stream

For non-overlapping events with the same delivery settings, a reusable YouTube stream can serve multiple broadcasts. Bind every broadcast to the correct stream. For simultaneous events or different stream settings, plan separate streams and encoder processes as needed; a single incoming feed cannot supply two different programs at once.

Choose how the server will run each block

You can start a separate playout process for each scheduled block, or keep a process running and change its input. Compare the options using restart reliability, transitions between files, logging, and compatibility with your actual media. A playlist example can help illustrate FFmpeg’s concat approach, but it is not a validated production recipe for every file set or FFmpeg build. See the FFmpeg concat playlist example as a starting point, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback.

Set up scheduled YouTube events and bind streams

  1. Check channel readiness. Confirm that the channel is enabled and permitted to livestream. Creating a broadcast requires account authorization; YouTube documents permission errors when an account is not enabled or is blocked from live streaming.
  2. Create a broadcast for each programming block. In the Live Streaming API, create a liveBroadcast with a title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. Each event is a distinct broadcast, even if several events use the same incoming stream.
  3. Create or select an incoming stream. A liveStream describes the feed sent to YouTube. Review its delivery settings, including frame rate, ingestion type, and resolution, and configure your encoder to match.
  4. Bind each broadcast to its intended stream. Use the liveBroadcasts.bind operation to associate the broadcast and stream resources. Verify the association before the event; YouTube associates each broadcast with exactly one stream.
  5. Schedule the Hetzner playout job. Configure an OS scheduler or process supervisor to start the appropriate playlist process for each event. Align its start with the event schedule and confirm that the encoder is sending to the stream bound to that broadcast.
  6. Test the complete lifecycle. Run a test using the actual files, server, encoder settings, and YouTube event workflow. Confirm that the feed appears and that the broadcast can move through the required testing and live states before relying on unattended scheduling. YouTube describes the lifecycle in its Live Streaming API guide.

The API and hosting documentation do not provide a universal cron or systemd timer, process restart policy, or playlist-switching command for your particular operating system and media. Choose and validate those details on the installed system rather than assuming a generic command is production-ready.

Choose RTMP or HLS based on your encoder

The ingest protocol determines how the feed is delivered; protocol requirements are not interchangeable. Choose one that your encoder and workflow support, then follow its specific settings.

Ingest What to account for
RTMP FFmpeg documents sending a real-time file input to an RTMP server. Check the installed FFmpeg build and the media’s codecs and dimensions before deciding whether to copy streams or transcode them. See the FFmpeg protocols documentation.
HLS YouTube’s setup guidance requires MPEG-TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it is segment-based. These are HLS requirements, not RTMP settings. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Estimate and test the Hetzner server workload

There is no established Hetzner server size that is sufficient for every scheduled playlist. The workload depends on whether FFmpeg copies compatible streams or transcodes them, the media resolution and bitrate, the number of simultaneous jobs, storage needs, and the selected ingest path. Hetzner’s general server documentation does not give a streaming-specific CPU, memory, storage, or network prescription.

  • Measure the actual playlist and output settings on the server you intend to use.
  • Include the busiest case in the test, such as simultaneous streams or the most demanding transcode, if your schedule has one.
  • Check available storage for the media and logs, and verify that the server can sustain the expected network output.
  • Observe transitions and process behavior over a full playlist cycle; a short startup test will not reveal every end-of-file or restart issue.

Common scheduling failures and what to check

  • The YouTube event is scheduled but has no picture or sound: confirm that the encoder is running, sending to the stream bound to that broadcast, and using compatible delivery settings.
  • The feed reaches YouTube but the wrong program plays: check the server’s playlist-to-event mapping and the scheduled job’s selected input; YouTube’s event schedule does not choose local files.
  • The API rejects broadcast creation or binding: verify account authorization, live-stream eligibility, and the broadcast-to-stream association. YouTube documents permission errors for accounts not enabled or blocked from livestreaming.
  • Playback fails or breaks at a file change: test the source files together with the selected concat or playlist method. Check codec, dimensions, timestamps, and whether stream copying is compatible; transcode only if the media or delivery settings require it.
  • The automation misses a start or leaves a process behind: inspect scheduler timing, time zone, process supervision, and logs on the server. The correct recovery behavior depends on your OS and implementation and must be tested.
  • HLS is rejected or delayed more than expected: check the HLS-specific segment, rolling playlist, HTTPS, and byte-range requirements. Do not apply these requirements as though they governed RTMP.

Protect rights and keep the schedule honest

Use only videos you are authorized to livestream, including music, footage, and other third-party material. Check that your channel is permitted to livestream before building an unattended schedule. A technically working playlist does not establish that you have streaming rights or that a channel is eligible; YouTube’s API documentation describes permission-related failures but cannot assess a particular account or media library.
