For background location on Android, the Companion app’s setup guidance calls for Location: Allow all the time and Nearby devices. On iPhone, choose Allow While Using the App, then Allow always if you want full background functionality, including background automations. Allow notifications in both the app’s setup and your phone’s system settings; on Android, check the notification channel used by the alert too.
These choices affect location sharing, background behavior, and whether alerts arrive promptly. You can limit location precision, leave unneeded sensors disabled, and reserve special access for features that need it.

Choose location access based on the features you want
Location access supports zone-based presence, location sensors, and a documented connection-security behavior: Home Assistant can use location to determine whether it can use a non-encrypted URL on your home network. The exact options and labels can vary by operating-system and app version. See the Home Assistant Companion location documentation for the current feature details.

If location permission has not been granted or has been removed, the documentation says “no location data will be sent from your device to Home Assistant.” Location data, when enabled, is sent from the device to your Home Assistant instance or via Home Assistant Cloud depending on the URLs you have configured; the documentation says it is not sent via other servers or organizations.

Android: allow background location only if you need it
For background location updates, the official onboarding guidance calls for Location: Allow all the time and Nearby devices. If you choose a more restrictive location permission or deny location, expect location-dependent features to be limited. Review the permission prompt and your Android settings; exact menu labels can differ by device maker and OS release.
iPhone: distinguish app use from background automations
For background automations, Home Assistant’s onboarding guidance describes choosing Allow While Using the App and then Allow always. A separate connection-security behavior has a more specific requirement: the documentation specifies Always and Precise for its most-secure home-network behavior when an unencrypted URL is involved. Choose the access level that matches your use rather than assuming every feature needs the same location setting.

Enable only the sensors you use
Android sensor controls
Open Settings > Companion App > Manage Sensors in Home Assistant to review sensor options. Most are off by default, apart from basic device sensors and sensors permitted during onboarding. Turning on a sensor may prompt for an additional permission it needs. If you deny location, Android sensors that do not rely on location may remain usable.

iOS controls when background activity runs, so sensor updates do not follow a fixed interval. Timing depends on circumstances such as whether the app is in the foreground, background fetch, location changes, and manual update actions. If you need an update after a specific event such as a charging-state or battery-level change, the troubleshooting documentation recommends a Shortcuts automation that invokes Update Sensors. Allow notifications at both levels
Notifications need permission in the operating system as well as the relevant Home Assistant app setup. If alerts do not arrive, check both layers before changing other settings.
Android notifications and channels
Allow notifications under Settings > Apps > Home Assistant > Notifications. If only some alerts are missing, check the specific Android notification channel used by the automation; a channel’s settings can affect whether those messages appear. Menu names may vary on Android devices.

iPhone notifications and critical alerts
Check iOS Settings > Notifications > Home Assistant and enable Allow Notifications. Critical alerts are optional and intended for high-priority notifications that should sound even when Silent or Do Not Disturb is enabled. They are a separate choice, not a requirement for ordinary notifications.
Grant special access only when a feature requires it
On Android, Home Assistant commands that change Do Not Disturb settings require Notification Policy access. Grant it if you use those commands, not simply to enable standard notifications. Android 15 and newer restrict how apps can change Do Not Disturb settings, so the available behavior may depend on the OS version. The notification commands documentation explains the feature.
Understand what push notifications expose
Home Assistant’s documentation says notification content is not stored on remote servers, but push delivery uses Firebase Cloud Messaging and notification contents are not encrypted on Firebase. That means the stated server-storage policy should not be mistaken for end-to-end encryption. Avoid including sensitive details in notification text if this delivery architecture is unsuitable for them. See the notification details and privacy documentation.
The same documentation states a maximum of 500 push notifications per device per day, with the counter resetting at midnight UTC. It excludes errors, critical alerts, and notification commands as described on that page. The documentation’s publication year is not stated, so treat this as the currently documented limit rather than a permanent guarantee.
Troubleshoot missing alerts, sensors, or presence
- No notifications arrive: Confirm notification permission in Home Assistant setup and the phone’s app settings. On Android, inspect the channel used by the missing alert. If the mobile-app notify action is missing after setup, the troubleshooting documentation says a Home Assistant restart may be needed.
- Only some Android alerts arrive: Check the channel associated with those messages, not only the app-wide notification switch.
- Presence or location sensors do not update: Review the app’s location permission and the location-sharing choice. A disabled location permission prevents location data from being sent to Home Assistant.
- Some sensors are missing on Android: Open Settings > Companion App > Manage Sensors and enable the sensor you need; grant any permission it requests.
- iPhone sensors update irregularly: iOS schedules background activity and can heavily throttle it. Use the app’s manual update action or, for specific triggers, a Shortcuts automation that invokes Update Sensors.
For recovery steps beyond these checks, consult the official troubleshooting FAQs. Operating-system prompts and settings paths can change between releases, so use the current labels shown on your device.
