For better Plex playback on Google TV, set Plex’s home or remote streaming quality to match the connection, leave subtitle burn-in on Automatic to start, and use Google TV’s frame-rate and dynamic-range matching options when your device and television support them. These settings address different problems: Plex controls streaming and subtitle handling, while Google TV controls the picture signal sent to the screen. None guarantees Direct Play, which also depends on the media’s codecs, container and selected subtitles.
Which settings matter, and where are they?
There are two control panels to check. On supported Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer devices, Settings > Display & Sound controls output resolution, dynamic range and frame-rate matching. Menu names and availability may vary on other Google TV televisions and streamers. In the Plex Android TV app, settings control streaming quality, subtitle handling and refresh-rate switching; their placement can vary by app version. Google’s display settings guide and Plex’s Android TV settings guide describe the respective controls.

These settings can improve the match between your connection, media and display, but they cannot make unsupported video formats compatible. Plex may still need to transcode even when you choose original or maximum quality.

Set Plex streaming quality for the connection
In Plex, home streaming applies when the client and server are on the same local network; remote streaming applies when watching over the internet. Choose a quality the relevant connection can sustain. Plex says a high local setting is usually suitable when the network can keep up with the file’s bitrate. If the available bandwidth is insufficient for the selected quality, playback may pause or buffer. Wi-Fi performance varies; a wired connection can typically use the highest available local quality if the Google TV device supports Ethernet.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
Quality selection and format compatibility are separate. A high-quality setting does not force Direct Play: Plex may transcode because of the video or audio format, container, bitrate limit or subtitle track. Plex’s streaming quality guidance explains how to choose a setting, while its Quality Suggestions documentation notes that original or maximum quality does not guarantee that no transcoding will occur. Automatic adjustment or suggestions, where available, can help adapt quality to connection conditions, but they do not replace a server capable of transcoding when needed.
Use Google TV display settings for picture and motion
On supported devices, open Settings > Display & Sound. The available options depend on the device and connected TV.

- Resolution: Choose a resolution supported by the television. Selecting 4K cannot add 4K detail to a non-4K display.
- Dynamic range and color format / Format selection: Review these options against the TV’s supported formats. Google says HDR works automatically when supported, though some TVs require their HDMI signal format to be set to enhanced mode. If SDR content looks oversaturated while HDR output is forced, Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends turning on Match content.
- Match content frame rate: Enable this if available and you want output cadence to follow the source frame rate or a multiple of it. The TV may switch display modes, and support depends on the device and television.
These display controls change the signal sent to the screen; they do not make Plex select a compatible codec or guarantee that the server will Direct Play the file. See Google’s display settings documentation for device-specific details.
Choose Plex subtitle handling and appearance
Start with Plex’s Burn Subtitles set to Automatic. Plex’s Android TV guide says Automatic burns image-based subtitles such as VOBSUB and PGS, as well as complex ASS/SSA subtitles. Burning renders subtitle text into the video image; when conversion is required, that operation is performed on the server and can mean a full video transcode. The Always option can increase server work.

- Android TV: With the Android TV operating system you will have access to the best content, download the infinity of applications available through the Google Play Store!

- Chromecast Built-in: Easily cast movies, shows, and photos from your Android or iOS device to your Android TV

If selecting a subtitle causes playback trouble or a transcode, try a compatible text subtitle track. Subtitle support and appearance are not identical across formats and players. Plex also offers appearance controls such as size, color, background and position; adjust them for readability, bearing in mind that styling support depends on the subtitle format and playback behavior. Plex’s Direct Play and Direct Stream guide explains why a selected subtitle the client cannot handle may require video transcoding.
Google TV’s system caption preferences are separate from Plex’s subtitle controls, and Google warns that system preferences may not apply in some apps. Choose subtitle tracks and adjust supported styling within Plex for Plex playback. See Google’s accessibility guidance and Plex’s Android TV settings guide.

Other Plex settings to change only when needed
- Refresh Rate Switch: Enable it if available and you want Plex to align the display refresh rate with the media rate or a multiple of it; this may reduce judder.
- H264 Maximum Level: Leave the default at 4.1 unless diagnosing a specific compatibility issue. Plex warns that raising it may cause playback problems. It is a compatibility setting, not an image-enhancement control.
Check the current option names and behavior in Plex’s Android TV settings documentation.

- Check the Plex playback information or overlay. Identify whether the session is Direct Play, Direct Stream or Transcode; the selected quality value alone does not reveal which mode Plex is using.
- If Plex is transcoding, inspect the cause. Check the subtitle format, video or audio support, container and any bitrate or remote-quality limit. Direct Play sends compatible source media unchanged; Direct Stream repackages compatible tracks into a compatible container. Transcoding converts media when the client cannot use it as provided.
- Test whether subtitles are involved. Briefly turn subtitles off or select another compatible track. If playback behavior changes, subtitle handling may be triggering conversion. Restore your preferred track or adjust burn-in settings once you know the cause.
- If buffering continues during Direct Play, check the network path. Compare the actual media bitrate with the connection’s capacity. A stable wired connection may help where the device supports it; changing output resolution alone will not fix limited bandwidth.
- If motion judders, compare refresh-rate options. Check Plex’s Refresh Rate Switch and Google TV’s Match content frame rate where available, then compare the same scene.
- If HDR or SDR colors look wrong, review display format settings. Check Google TV’s dynamic-range behavior and the TV’s HDMI enhanced-format setting; consult the TV maker for model-specific HDR instructions.
