What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For privacy, start by reviewing recent access in Privacy Dashboard and adjusting individual app permissions; use the global camera or microphone switch only when you want a broader pause. For battery life, keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled, then check Battery usage before limiting a particular app. Display and location changes can help with specific concerns, but each has a convenience or usability tradeoff. Google notes that settings and steps vary by Pixel model and Android version.
Start with app access, not blanket permission denial
Open Settings > Privacy > Privacy dashboard to review which apps recently accessed sensitive permissions. Then use Settings > Privacy > Permission manager to see apps by permission type and change access. Labels and paths can differ by device and Android version; Google’s Pixel privacy settings guide and app-permission instructions describe the controls.

Consider whether each app needs the access it has. A navigation app may need location while in use; a camera app needs camera access for its main purpose. An app that no longer serves you can have its access removed, and Android may offer Pause app activity if unused to limit activity for apps you have not used. The right choice depends on how you use the app, rather than a rule to deny every request.

For a single app, change Camera or Microphone access in Permission manager. If you want to pause access broadly, Pixel privacy controls also include system-level Camera access and Microphone access switches. Use app-level controls for ongoing, selective restrictions; use the global switches when you want a wider pause.

Hide sensitive lock-screen notifications
If someone might see your phone while it is locked, review notification visibility under Settings > Notifications or the lock-screen privacy controls. Choose whether notification content appears on the lock screen. The exact labels may vary; Google’s Pixel privacy guide covers lock-screen notification privacy.
Review location and Google account data controls separately
Turning off device location prevents apps and services from obtaining the phone’s device location, but it can also interfere with location-based features such as finding a lost device or location sharing. Google says local results and ads may still be based on your IP address when device location is off. If you rely on location features, review individual apps’ location permissions instead of switching location off for the whole phone. See Google’s location settings guide.

Other controls address different kinds of data and should not be treated as one master privacy switch. Google’s Pixel privacy page points to Location History, Activity controls, Ads controls for ad personalization and advertising ID, and Usage & diagnostics. Review each based on what you want to retain or limit. For example, Google says that when Usage & diagnostics is enabled, Settings Services may collect device or other IDs, app interactions, crash logs, and diagnostics; location data used for automated Rules stays on the phone. Details are in Google’s Settings Services explanation.
Keep Adaptive Battery and battery optimization enabled
Google recommends leaving Adaptive Battery and battery optimization on; both are enabled by default. Adaptive Battery learns from recent app use and can limit background activity for apps you use less often. The tradeoff is that it may reduce performance or delay notifications. A newly set-up or factory-reset Pixel may need a few weeks to optimize. Google’s Adaptive Battery guidance explains the behavior.

Reduce display drain only where the tradeoff works for you
Google lists several display settings as battery-saving options. Their availability depends on Pixel model and software version, and the effect of an individual change is not quantified in its guidance.
- Brightness: Lower screen brightness or use Adaptive brightness if it suits your viewing conditions.
- Dark theme: Try it if you prefer the appearance; Google lists it among its battery suggestions.
- Always-on Display: Turn it off if you do not need glanceable information while the screen is idle.
- Screen timeout: Choose a shorter interval if you are comfortable with the screen turning off sooner.
- Smooth Display: Consider turning it off if you are willing to trade smoother motion for a potential battery benefit.
- Live wallpapers: Switch to a still wallpaper if you do not need animated backgrounds.
Google’s Pixel battery-life guide lists these options. Treat them as choices to test against your own use, not guaranteed fixes or universal requirements.

Find the app or system component using battery
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery usage and review consumption by app or system.
- Look for apps with notable overall or background use, then inspect their background-use setting.
- Google generally recommends leaving apps set to Optimized. Change a specific app only when its usage pattern justifies it and you accept possible effects on background activity or notifications.
- On Pixel 6 and later, use Battery diagnostics for the Battery draining too quickly issue if that option is available. Google’s battery usage help and battery drain troubleshooting guide cover these checks.
Some extra battery use for a few days after a software update is normal while the phone downloads and optimizes software, according to Google. If unusual drain persists beyond that, continue troubleshooting rather than assuming a particular setting or app is responsible.
Try connectivity changes only when they apply
Google also lists Adaptive connectivity for Pixel 4a (5G) and later, including Fold, and turning off tethering or hotspots when they are not in use. Adaptive connectivity may be limited by some U.S. carriers. These are model- and carrier-dependent options, not settings every Pixel owner will see. Google’s battery-life guidance has the details.

What battery savings can you expect?
Google’s support guidance describes possible battery-saving settings but does not give an attributable percentage for how much any one change saves. The result depends on the phone, software version, settings, and use, so a fixed savings estimate would be misleading.
