These are recommendations based on The Coalition’s published weapon roles and mechanics—not a post-release tier list. Best E-Day weapons by combat range
| Combat range | Best-supported choice | Why it fits | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Close | Gnasher | The Coalition describes it as a signature weapon for close engagements, designed to feel punchy and consistent. | Capacity is six shells, down from eight in earlier versions cited by the developer; its round-by-round active reload can add one or two shells without a full reload cycle. The Coalition’s gameplay update |
| Midrange | Prototype Lancer | The developer calls it an all-round rifle, with a higher rate of fire and deeper magazine than recent Lancers. | The update gives no exact rate of fire or magazine capacity. The Coalition’s gameplay update |
| Midrange alternative | Hammerburst | Its accurate six-round burst suits deliberate shots rather than indiscriminate spraying. | A perfect active reload increases its rate of fire; accuracy still depends on placing bursts well. The Coalition’s gameplay update |
| Longer sightlines | Marksman class in Horde Siege; Lancer MK1 (Retro) as a weapon option | Marksman is built around precision damage and longer sightlines. The Retro can be effective at mid-to-long range. | The Retro has strong recoil that the shooter must manage. The official sources do not establish a single best long-range weapon across modes. Close range: use the Gnasher to win committed fights
The Gnasher is the clearest close-range recommendation. Its role is not simply a matter of tradition: The Coalition says the weapon should feel “punchy, visceral and consistent,” and its updated capacity is six shells rather than eight. The September 30, 2026 update discusses the weapon’s intended feel, while the gameplay update describes its ammunition and active-reload changes. The Coalition’s September 30 update

In Horde Siege, the Breacher class is the natural role for frontline pressure: its design focuses on close-range damage, and its Adrenaline Injector restores health while reducing incoming damage for a push. That class description supports a close-fight playstyle; it does not prove that every Breacher loadout should use the Gnasher in every encounter. The Coalition’s multiplayer deep dive
When a close-range fight is not yet a Gnasher fight
The Snub is described as a quick-draw, quick-stow clean-up weapon, which makes it a sidearm option rather than the primary range-based recommendation. Smoke Grenades can block player and AI sightlines, creating an opportunity to reposition or charge; they change the conditions of an engagement rather than serving as a direct damage alternative.

Midrange: start with the Prototype Lancer, then choose by handling
The Prototype Lancer is the most broadly supported midrange starting point because The Coalition explicitly calls it an all-round rifle. The developer says it has a higher rate of fire and a deeper magazine than recent Lancers, but does not publish exact figures for either characteristic. Treat “all-round” as the intended role, not proof that it beats every other rifle in damage or accuracy.
If you prefer controlled bursts, the Hammerburst is a credible alternative. Its six-round burst is described as accurate, and a perfect active reload increases its rate of fire. This makes it a better fit for deliberate burst placement than for a player who wants to hold the trigger and rely on automatic fire.

Horde Siege midrange roles
The Assault class is expressly designed for midrange weapons and flexibility. It receives a damage boost in cover and can deploy a Sonic Disruptor to stun incoming enemies. The Medic is also described as a midrange specialist, but its defining job is reviving and supporting nearby teammates with a Stim Vaporizer—not maximizing weapon damage. Long range: favor precision, but do not assume a proven winner
For longer sightlines in Horde Siege, the Marksman class is the most direct official recommendation: it is built around precision damage, gains improved critical-hit damage, and can use a Pulse Drone to tag Locust units for the squad. Those are class attributes, not a published ranking of individual long-range weapons.

The Lancer MK1, also called the Retro, has a more conditional recommendation. The Coalition says it remains deadly up close and can be used effectively at mid-to-long range if the shooter can tame its strong recoil. That recoil qualification matters: it is not the straightforward long-range option for someone who struggles to keep shots on target.
The reviewed official material does not publish a weapon-by-weapon range and damage table, DPS comparison, win-rate statistic, or complete ranking. It therefore cannot establish one overall best long-range weapon, especially before the listed October 6, 2026 release.

Why distance and handling matter in E-Day
The Coalition says projectiles now have simulated ballistics and travel time. At distances beyond a weapon’s effective range, a player may need to lead a moving target rather than aim exactly where it is. Weapon range, target movement, recoil and sightlines can all change whether a nominally suitable gun connects reliably. The Coalition’s gameplay update

- Manage recoil: some automatic weapons reward short bursts; the Retro’s strong recoil is specifically called out.
- Expect scope movement: first-person scopes sway, so a scoped shot may require a steadier aim.
- Use cover and sightlines: encounter layout and enemy combinations affect which range you can safely fight at; smoke can deny sightlines while you move.
How Horde Siege changes the choice
In Horde Siege, a class supplies a starting loadout, combat bonus, progression path and tactical gear. Weapon parts earned in missions can unlock weapon mods, while class progression unlocks loadout weapons and mods. The Coalition describes customization as a way to shape playstyle; it does not identify a tested, universally optimal mod build. The Coalition’s multiplayer deep dive

The gameplay sandbox is unified across Campaign, Horde and Versus, but Horde Siege’s class roles and progression still affect how players approach loadouts. Apply the range recommendations to the actual mode and encounter rather than treating one weapon as best in every situation. The Coalition also says it will monitor player telemetry and feedback to guide tuning, so post-launch balance can change the picture. The gameplay update and September 30 update
Other weapons and their narrower jobs
- Breechshot: The Coalition describes it as a PvP headshot weapon with a one-shot headshot kill in PvP. Do not generalize that claim to other modes or body shots.
- Heavy Prototype Boomshot: A heavy pickup with a hefty kick. The developer says heavy weapons slow movement, although most movement remains possible while carrying one; weigh that mobility cost against the weapon’s role.
Practical picks at a glance
- Want a straightforward close-range pick? Choose the Gnasher; in Horde Siege, Breacher aligns with close-range pressure.
- Need a flexible rifle for medium distances? Start with the Prototype Lancer; try the Hammerburst if controlled bursts suit you better.
- Expect longer sightlines in Horde Siege? Consider Marksman for its precision-focused role. The Retro can reach mid-to-long range if you can control its recoil.
- Facing uncertain distances? Consider encounter layout, cover, projectile travel and handling rather than expecting one gun to dominate every range.
Xbox lists Gears of War: E-Day for October 6, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S and Windows, with Microsoft Store and Steam listed as storefronts. Because that date is after October 4, these recommendations reflect the developer’s published descriptions before the listed release, not verified launch performance.
