Some Galaxy tablets can take over Chromebook-style work such as typing, browsing and managing files, but they are not universal Chromebook replacements. Samsung’s current US comparison page lists five candidates, with Dynamic AMOLED 2X screens from 11 to 14.6 inches. Each supports a desktop-style DeX experience, but the right choice depends on the Android apps, browser tools, file handling and peripherals your work requires.
What makes a Galaxy tablet a Chromebook alternative?
Samsung DeX gives supported Galaxy tablets a desktop-style interface and can open apps in pop-up windows. Pairing a tablet with a compatible Book Cover Keyboard adds keyboard and touchpad input, making a laptop-like setup possible without a separate mouse. Samsung describes DeX as running directly on supported tablets or connecting them to compatible external displays.

That is not the same as running ChromeOS or having every Chromebook workflow available. Samsung says DeX for PC is not available on Galaxy tablets: you cannot run DeX as a window inside a Windows or Mac computer. Before buying, verify that your essential apps and web services work well on Android, and check any required peripherals, file workflows and browser tools.

The screen sizes distinguish workspace dimensions, not speed: Samsung’s comparison does not establish a performance ranking, and it is not a controlled comparison of battery life or app compatibility.

Which model suits your work?
Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra: maximize screen workspace
Its listed 14.6-inch screen matches the S11 Ultra for the largest display in this group. Consider it if you expect to work with several visible windows or documents and are comfortable building a keyboard-cover setup. The display specification alone does not show that it is faster or better overall than the other candidates.
Galaxy Tab S12+: choose a large screen without going Ultra
Samsung lists a 12.6-inch display, between the 14.6-inch Ultra screens and the smaller options. It is a straightforward size-based choice if you want substantial screen area but do not need the largest listed panel. Check the keyboard cover sold for the exact model before planning a laptop-style setup.

Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra: large-screen DeX option
The S11 Ultra also has a listed 14.6-inch display and belongs to a family Samsung identifies as compatible with DeX. Confirm the available configuration and exact cover fit before purchase; the screen size does not guarantee that a particular accessory is included.

At 11 inches, the S11 has the smallest listed screen among these five, trading workspace for a more compact tablet format. Samsung’s March 2026 US accessory list names both Book Cover Keyboard and Slim variants for the S11 family. That dated list is not a live retail-price reference, so check the current SKU, fit and price when shopping.

Galaxy Tab S10+: a middle-size alternative
The S10+ has a listed 12.4-inch screen. Samsung’s March 2026 accessory list names an S10+ keyboard-cover family that also references the S9+ and S9 FE+. Do not assume a cover is interchangeable: verify that its stated compatibility includes your exact tablet model.
How DeX works on the tablet and an external display
Samsung lists the S11 and S12 tablet families for DeX over supported wired connections and lists them among families supporting wireless DeX. The exact external-display experience depends on the model and connection type, so check Samsung’s DeX compatibility and connection guidance for the tablet and display you plan to use.

Supported tablets can run standalone DeX on the tablet itself. Samsung’s standalone DeX guidance describes opening apps in pop-up windows. Starting standalone DeX from the Home screen and creating multiple desktop workspaces require Android 16 with One UI 8.0 or later; do not assume those workspace controls are present on every software version.

Samsung’s compatibility guidance also flags the Tab S10 FE and S9 FE families as lacking HDMI output and wireless DeX. Those are not among the five candidates here, but the distinction matters if you are considering a lower-cost alternative and expect to connect a monitor.

Plan for the keyboard and check the exact fit
A Book Cover Keyboard is an additional accessory, not a reason to assume a tablet is ready to replace a laptop out of the box. Samsung’s keyboard and DeX guidance describes using a Book Cover Keyboard with DeX; its touchpad can serve as the pointing device. Confirm the cover’s exact tablet compatibility and whether it is included in the configuration you are buying.

Check your Chromebook workflows before switching
There is no universal app-by-app answer here: the cited Samsung materials describe device features and connections, not whether a particular Chromebook app or workflow has a capable Android equivalent. Make a short list of what you rely on and test those tasks on Android before committing.

- Browser work: Check the browser tools, extensions or site-specific behavior your routine depends on rather than assuming desktop-browser parity.
- Files: Try your actual file transfers, formats, cloud storage and any organization or editing steps you use.
- Peripherals: Verify support for any display, storage device or other hardware you need, using the connection requirements for the exact tablet.
- Typing and pointing: Check the exact keyboard-cover fit and decide whether its keyboard and touchpad suit your work.
Samsung’s DeX support information and connection compatibility page explain the platform features, but they do not establish that a Galaxy tablet can reproduce every Chromebook workflow.
