Start with Settings > Network > Network Status. Fire TV’s Network Status tool can help identify whether trouble is between the device and your router or between the router and the internet. Then choose a fix for the symptom: refresh Wi-Fi for buffering or connection errors, troubleshoot an app when only that app fails, and check the TV and HDMI setup when video resolution is low.
Check Network Status before changing settings
Open Settings > Network > Network Status and review the on-screen result and recommendations. The tool checks the Fire TV-to-router connection and the router-to-internet connection, which helps narrow down where a problem may be. Some compatible devices also offer a speed test and advanced connection details; those options are not available on every model. Amazon describes the tool in its Fire TV Network Status help.
If several devices in your home have lost internet access, the issue may be with the router, modem, or service rather than a Fire TV setting. If other devices work but Fire TV does not, continue with the Wi-Fi steps below.
If videos buffer or Fire TV says “Unable to Connect”
Refresh the Fire TV connection
- Unplug the Fire TV from power, wait 10 seconds, then reconnect it.
- Open Settings > Network, select your Wi-Fi network, and switch Wi-Fi off and back on if that option is available.
- If the connection still fails, forget the network and reconnect by selecting it and entering its password.
Menu labels and available controls can vary by model. These steps follow Amazon’s Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting.

Restart the modem and router, then consider placement
Restart your modem and router, following their manufacturer’s instructions. If signal strength is the likely problem, move the Fire TV and router closer together where practical, and reduce obstructions between them. A wired Ethernet connection may help when Wi-Fi coverage is unreliable, but confirm that your Fire TV model supports the adapter or Ethernet setup you intend to use.
Check Wi-Fi band and coverage options
Amazon recommends using the same network name (SSID) for 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands when the router supports them, so a compatible Fire TV can select a suitable band based on signal strength. Only Fire TV models with Wi-Fi 6E support 6 GHz. Amazon also identifies Wi-Fi 6E-or-newer routers as an option for those devices and mesh routers as a consideration for larger homes; neither is a guaranteed upgrade for every buffering problem.

If only one app has playback trouble
When other apps and network-connected devices work normally, focus on the affected app rather than treating the problem as a general Wi-Fi slowdown.
- Check for a Fire TV update under Settings > My Fire TV or Settings > Device & Software, depending on the menu on your device.
- Restart Fire TV.
- Open Settings > Applications, select the affected app, and use the available options to clear its cache or data.
Clearing app data can remove app-specific settings or require you to sign in again. Amazon lists updates, restart, and app cache/data steps in its guidance for Prime Video streaming problems; these are app troubleshooting steps, not a universal way to increase network speed.

If 4K Ultra HD playback is missing or video stays at a lower resolution
Check what the connected display supports
On devices that offer it, open Settings > Display & Sounds > Audio/Video Diagnostics. The diagnostic can report the maximum resolution and refresh rate, along with supported HDR or Dolby Vision formats for connected HDMI equipment. Availability and menu wording vary by device.
Also check that the title and your streaming plan support 4K, that the connection can sustain playback, and that the TV’s selected HDMI input is configured for the format you want. Amazon’s 4K Ultra HD troubleshooting recommends checking the connection, using a high-speed HDMI cable, moving closer to the router, or trying Ethernet when appropriate.

Check every device in the HDMI chain
If Fire TV connects through a receiver or soundbar, that device and its chosen HDMI port must support the required format. Amazon specifically advises checking for HDCP 2.2 support and 4K pass-through on the receiver or soundbar. An unsupported link in the chain can limit the format even if the TV itself supports 4K.
Account for refresh-rate and Dolby Vision compatibility
Amazon notes that some TV configurations offering 4K at 30 Hz with Dolby Vision may cause Fire TV to stream at 1080p at 60 Hz for smoother playback. Where the TV and connected equipment support it, settings may allow 4K at 60 Hz instead. Check the diagnostic and the capabilities of the entire HDMI setup rather than assuming a lower displayed resolution is caused by Wi-Fi alone.
