Which Farm Technologies Should a Small Farm Adopt First?

The best first farm technology is the one that solves a real farm constraint. Start with soil and water assessment, then assess sensors or equipment against workload, cost, and local support.

There is no universally best first farm technology. Start with the constraint that costs your operation the most—such as uncertain soil fertility, limited water, or labor-intensive fieldwork—and choose the simplest affordable tool that addresses it. For many small farms, soil and water assessment is a sounder starting point than buying precision hardware: equipment and sensors make sense only when they fit the farm’s crops, acreage, labor needs, water access, and support options.

Start with the farm’s limiting constraint

A useful purchase solves a specific problem on your land. Soil, slope, climate, and water availability influence which enterprises and crops are feasible; field size and workload influence whether equipment will be used enough to justify its cost. Oregon State University Extension’s guide to selecting an enterprise for small acreages is one resource for thinking through land and enterprise fit.

Before comparing products, write down the problem you want to change: for example, repeated delays in watering, too many hours spent weeding, or uncertainty about nutrient applications. Then identify what evidence would show the purchase helped, such as time saved, an input avoided, improved crop quality, or more stable yields.

Assess soil and water before buying hardware

Use soil tests to guide decisions

Where pH, organic matter, or nutrient levels affect crop and fertilizer choices, a composite laboratory soil test can provide information for those decisions. Testing is a decision tool, not a guarantee of a particular yield or a reason to apply every nutrient a report measures. Interpret results for the crops and management practices you actually use, with local technical guidance when needed.

Establish whether irrigation is feasible

Irrigation planning starts with the water source, available quantity, and water quality—not with a sensor. USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) defines irrigation water management as “a plan to help you know when, how much, and at what rate to apply irrigation water in an efficient manner.” Its Solutions for Small-Scale Farms materials can help identify relevant practices, but NRCS says the factsheets are introductory and “should not be used to implement conservation practices or management concepts without technical support.” Ask a local Extension or NRCS office about farm-specific assistance.

Match the next investment to the bottleneck

If water timing is the problem

First consider an irrigation schedule suited to the crop, soil, and system. Soil-moisture sensors can help inform when irrigation is needed, but they are useful only if their readings are appropriate to the measurement depth, soil, and irrigation setup—and someone can act on them. Compare calibration, compatibility, repair support, and local conditions before buying.

A sensor does not by itself establish that a farm will save money or that water use across a watershed will fall. Field application, water withdrawals, return flows, and total consumption are distinct measures; efficiency at the field scale does not guarantee a watershed-scale reduction.

If labor is the problem

Compare the hours and crop cycles involved with the cost and expected use of labor-saving implements or equipment. Seeders, transplanters, weeders, and tillers may be relevant depending on the crop and production method, but a broad “smart farm” package is not a substitute for choosing equipment around actual tasks. Include maintenance, storage, operator skills, and repair access in the comparison, not only purchase price.

If handling or storage is the problem

Cold storage or other post-harvest tools may be more relevant than field sensors when losses or handling capacity constrain the operation. A Community Alliance with Family Farmers needs assessment for the San Joaquin Valley of California identified categories including irrigation sensors and automation, seeders, transplanters, weeders, tillers, and cold storage. These are candidate categories from a specific regional respondent group, not a universal ranking or national consensus.

Check whether precision technology fits a small farm

Precision agriculture can support resource management, but upfront cost, connectivity, complexity, compatibility with existing equipment, and access to support can all complicate adoption. U.S. adoption figures show that use varies with farm size; they describe who uses the technology, not whether it will pay off on an individual farm.

  • In 2023, small family farms—those with gross cash farm income (GCFI) below $350,000—had the lowest adoption rates within each precision-technology category, according to USDA Economic Research Service (ERS) data published in December 2024. ERS also reported that guidance autosteering was used by 52 percent of midsize farms and 70 percent of large-scale crop-producing farms in 2023; yield monitors, yield maps, and soil maps were used by 68 percent of large-scale crop-producing farms. These categories and adoption figures do not measure likely returns for a particular small farm. USDA ERS, “Precision agriculture use increases with farm size and varies widely by technology”
  • The U.S. Government Accountability Office reported that 27 percent of U.S. farms or ranches used precision agriculture practices to manage crops or livestock in 2023. This national figure likewise indicates adoption, not effectiveness or profitability for an individual operation. GAO, “Precision Agriculture: Benefits and Challenges for Technology Adoption and Use”

Evaluate the full cost and practical fit

Compare the options against the same criteria rather than choosing the newest or most automated one:

  • Farm fit: crop or livestock system, soil and slope, field size, water access, climate, and production method.
  • Economic fit: purchase and operating costs, realistic expected savings or revenue, utilization, financing, maintenance, and payback assumptions.
  • Operational fit: labor saved, skills required, connectivity, repair and support access, data handling, and interoperability with existing equipment.
  • Evidence and risk: local trial results, reliability under local conditions, compatibility, and whether claimed resource savings concern field application or broader water use.

Where possible, see a demonstration or trial the tool before committing. Set a measurable success criterion in advance—such as hours saved per week or a specific reduction in an input—then compare results with the cost and ongoing effort. Do not assume a claimed benefit will occur without evidence for the farm’s own conditions.

A practical order of adoption

  1. Diagnose: map relevant soil and land constraints; use composite laboratory tests when crop or nutrient decisions call for them; establish water source, quantity, and quality.
  2. Prioritize: identify the operating bottleneck with the greatest cost in time, inputs, crop quality, or production risk.
  3. Choose the least complex suitable response: consider scheduling before adding irrigation sensors, or compare task-specific implements before investing in automation.
  4. Check the total case: account for operating costs, likely utilization, maintenance, support, connectivity, compatibility, and skills.
  5. Measure the result: define what success means before purchase and evaluate it under local conditions.
