Look for a section such as Responsible Gambling, Safer Gambling, Account Controls or Limits, then read what each control covers before saving it. Choose a conservative amount you can afford to lose, separate from essential bills; no app limit can guarantee that gambling will be harmless.
Find the controls in your sportsbook account
There is no universal sequence of taps across betting apps. Start in your account or profile area and look for Responsible Gambling, Safer Gambling, Account Controls or Limits. You may also find a shortcut on the deposit screen. If the setting is not obvious, use the app’s help or search its support center for “limits.”

In Great Britain, the Gambling Commission’s RTS 12 requires licensed systems to provide easily accessible financial limits from registration and prompt customers to set a limit during registration or at first deposit. It says controls should be easy to find from the homepage and deposit pages, with as few clicks as possible. That is a Great Britain standard, not a specification that applies to every app worldwide. Read the UK Gambling Commission’s RTS 12 financial-limits standard.
Before confirming a setting, check the app’s on-screen description. Similar labels can mean different things across operators and jurisdictions.

Choose the kind of limit that matches what you want to control
A deposit limit controls money added to the account. It does not necessarily cap how much you can stake or lose. Other controls may apply to stakes, losses, net deposits or time spent gambling.
| Control | What it caps | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Deposit limit | Gross deposits made during a set period. | Whether withdrawals affect the calculation, the period and reset time, and whether the cap applies across the account or only one product. |
| Wagering or stake limit | The amount staked. A wagering limit may be defined differently by different operators. | Whether it limits each bet or total stakes over a period, and which products or markets count. |
| Loss limit | Losses over a period, often calculated as stakes less winnings or returns under the applicable rules. | How the operator calculates losses, including how returns and the period are handled. |
| Net-deposit limit | Deposits minus withdrawals over a period. | Whether the app offers this separately from a gross deposit cap and how it treats the chosen period. |
| Time limit | Time spent using the product or account, according to the operator’s definition. | When the clock runs, what happens when the limit is reached and whether it applies to one product or the whole account. |
The UK Gambling Commission’s RTS 12 distinguishes gross deposit limits from optional stake, loss and net-deposit limits. Its deposit-limit definitions are due to change on 30 June 2026, so readers in Great Britain should check the current standard and the operator’s explanation for how a limit is applied. The Commission’s standard and linked policy explanation set out the Great Britain requirements.

Period and reset
A daily, weekly or monthly cap is only useful to understand if you know when its period begins and resets. A calendar day may not mean a rolling 24 hours, and a month may follow a particular operator-defined schedule. Read the definition shown in the app rather than assuming the reset time.
In Great Britain, RTS 12 requires gross deposit limits covering 24 hours, 7 days and one month. Where periods overlap, the most restrictive limit applies. The Commission’s example: a £10 daily limit alongside a £100 weekly limit permits at most £70 in that week, because the daily cap constrains the amount available across the seven days.

Account-wide or product-specific
Check whether a limit covers the entire operator account or only the sportsbook. DraftKings’ US help center, for example, says its deposit, wagering and time limits, cool-off and self-exclusion apply across its Fantasy Sports, Sportsbook and Casino products. That is a DraftKings-specific policy, not a rule for every US sportsbook. See DraftKings’ explanation of its account controls.
When reductions and increases take effect
Find out whether a lower limit starts immediately and whether a higher one is delayed. Under Great Britain’s RTS 12, reductions should take effect immediately unless technical failure prevents it. A customer-requested increase must have a cooling-off period of at least 24 hours, followed by the customer’s positive confirmation. This is a Great Britain requirement; other locations may have different rules.

For a deposit limit under RTS 12, reaching the cap stops further deposits until the period restarts or an increase is requested subject to the cooling-off rule. The limit is not a prompt to keep betting with money already in the account.

- Separate essential expenses first. Do not use money needed for housing, bills, food, debt payments or other necessities. Choose a conservative amount you can afford to lose, not an amount based on expected winnings.
- Select the control and period. Decide whether you need to restrict deposits, stakes, losses, net deposits or time. Check the reset schedule before saving it.
- Read the coverage and change rules. Confirm which products and accounts are included, when a reduction takes effect and what waiting period applies to an increase.
- Save the setting and verify it. Look for an on-screen confirmation or a displayed active limit. If it is unclear, consult the operator’s help center rather than assuming the control is in force.
- Do not raise a limit to recover losses. If you feel unable to stay within it, stop betting and contact local support or use a stronger blocking option.
The National Council on Problem Gambling’s Internet Responsible Gambling Standards are a standards resource, not legislation; the PDF cover labels the edition 2026 and is revision-dated December 2023. Its existence does not make one set of controls or labels universal.

Use a break or self-exclusion if a limit is not enough
Cool-off or time-out
A cool-off or time-out is a temporary pause. Check its duration, what access is blocked and whether the pause covers only the sportsbook or other products on the same account. It can provide a short break, but it is not the same as excluding yourself for a longer period.
Self-exclusion
Self-exclusion is the stronger option when you want help stopping. In Great Britain, you can ask to exclude from one gambling business or use GAMSTOP ONLINE to make one request across online operators. After a self-exclusion agreement, the business must close the account, return remaining funds and remove you from its marketing databases. The UK Gambling Commission explains self-exclusion and support options.
The UK government identifies Gamban and BetBlocker as tools that can block gambling apps and websites. Website and payment blocks can add protection alongside self-exclusion; blocking software is not a substitute for formal exclusion or personal support. Availability and options vary by location. Read the UK government’s gambling reform white paper.
Know when to seek help
Limits are safety controls, not a guarantee against harm. The UK Gambling Commission lists chasing losses, unusually high numbers of in-play bets, frequent deposit-limit changes, repeated time-outs and setting meaningless limits among indicators relevant to licensed operators’ customer-interaction processes. These are not a diagnostic checklist; any concern about your own gambling is reason enough to stop and seek local support. See the Commission’s customer-interaction guidance for remote gambling licensees.
If you cannot stick to a limit, are borrowing or using essential money, or feel unable to stop, do not wait for a control to fail before acting. Use the operator’s self-exclusion process or a locally available multi-operator scheme, and contact a gambling-support service in your country. For Great Britain, the Gambling Commission’s self-exclusion guide points to support resources.
