Five electric vehicles in iSeeCars’ 2026 study averaged more than 50% depreciation over five years: the Nissan LEAF, Volkswagen ID.4, Tesla Model S, Tesla Model X and Ford Mustang Mach-E. The LEAF had the largest percentage decline; the Model X had the largest average dollar difference from its inflation-adjusted MSRP.

The figures below are from iSeeCars’ 2026 ranking of EV models by average five-year depreciation. The dollar figure is the reported average difference from MSRP, not a guaranteed loss for a particular owner.

These are the five highest-depreciating EVs in the study’s EV ranking, not the five highest-depreciating vehicles of every type. The study’s overall top-five list also includes non-EVs.
Percentage loss and dollar loss tell different stories
Depreciation percentage measures the share of the original price lost; the dollar difference measures the size of that loss in money. Those rankings do not match: the LEAF leads this group by percentage, while the Model X leads by average dollars. A high percentage decline does not necessarily mean the largest dollar loss, because the starting prices differ.

How the 2026 study calculated depreciation
iSeeCars analyzed more than 950,000 five-year-old used cars sold from March 2025 through February 2026. It compared average asking prices with MSRP, adjusting MSRP for inflation to 2026 dollars using U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, then modeled depreciation from the price difference. The analysis excluded heavy-duty trucks and vans, models no longer produced as of model year 2025, and low-volume models. Read iSeeCars’ 2026 study and methodology.
These percentages are modeled averages for a U.S. used-car dataset. They are not predictions for an individual car or guaranteed resale values. Mileage, condition, trim, location, incentives, and market timing can all make a specific vehicle’s sale price differ from a study average. The study compares outcomes; it does not establish a single cause for each model’s depreciation.

EV depreciation versus other segments
In the same 2026 study, average five-year EV depreciation was 57.2%, compared with 41.8% for all vehicles and 35.4% for hybrids. The reported average dollar differences were $28,435 for EVs, $16,571 overall, and $13,010 for hybrids.
Estimates shift with the period and market being measured. iSeeCars reported an EV average of 58.8% in 2025 and 49.1% in 2023, before the 57.2% figure in 2026. These figures describe different study periods, not a fixed rate an EV will lose year after year.

What to take from the ranking when shopping
- Use the ranking as a broad comparison, not as a quote for a specific car. Check the exact model year, trim, mileage, battery condition, accident history, and local asking prices before estimating resale value.
- Compare both percentage and dollar amounts. The model with the steepest proportional decline may not represent the biggest financial difference.
- Consider how long you expect to keep the vehicle and whether a lower used purchase price offsets the possibility of further depreciation.
iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer characterized the study’s 2026 EV segment result this way: “Electric vehicles continue to lose more value than any other segment, outpacing the industry average by more than 15 percentage points.” He also said the recent reduction in five-year depreciation rates suggested rising used-car demand and/or insufficient supply over the prior 12 months. Those are his interpretations of the study’s trend, not proof that any one factor caused a specific model’s result.
