Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallMany everyday gadgets still work without internet, but usually only for specific tasks. Bluetooth headphones can play audio from a nearby device, a printer can print over USB, and a phone can show maps downloaded in advance. Streaming, cloud features, remote control and live updates are often the first things to stop working.
The key distinction is whether a device needs the internet, a local Wi-Fi network, or neither. Here’s what to expect by gadget type—and what to prepare before an outage.

What “offline” means for a gadget
Losing internet does not always mean losing your home Wi-Fi. If your router remains powered, devices may still communicate with each other over the local network even when the router cannot reach the internet. Without Wi-Fi, a gadget may still work through Bluetooth, a cable, physical controls or content stored on the device.
- No internet, Wi-Fi still running: Some local devices and automations may continue to communicate through the router or a hub.
- No internet and no Wi-Fi: Bluetooth, USB, standalone controls and locally stored files may still work.
- Offline after preparation: Maps, books, music, camera schedules and smart-home routines may need to be downloaded or configured while online.
Offline capability is feature-specific. A device may retain its basic function while losing cloud access, remote app controls, notifications, streaming, voice commands or live information.

Which gadgets keep working offline?
Phones and car navigation
Navigation apps can provide useful directions without a live connection if the relevant map was downloaded in advance. Apple says Maps on iPhone with iOS 17 or later supports downloaded offline maps. Depending on the country or region, these can include place details such as opening hours and ratings, as well as turn-by-turn directions for driving, walking, cycling or public transport. Downloads use device storage, and offline maps do not sync across devices. See Apple’s instructions for downloading maps to use offline.
Google says compatible cars with Google built-in can use Google Maps offline if a map is downloaded beforehand. Real-time traffic is unavailable without a connection, and offline maps expire one year after download unless updated. See Google’s guidance for using Google built into a car without mobile data or internet.
- Download the area you need while connected and confirm it appears in the app’s offline-map list.
- Check available storage and update the map before it expires.
- Expect live traffic and current business information to be unavailable or out of date.
Bluetooth headphones, speakers, keyboards and mice
Bluetooth forms a local connection and does not require internet. A paired computer or phone can connect to Bluetooth headphones, speakers, keyboards and mice without Wi-Fi; Microsoft documents pairing Bluetooth devices in Windows in its Windows Bluetooth pairing guide.
The connection does not provide music or other online content by itself. Audio must be downloaded, stored locally or supplied from another nearby source to play without internet. Cloud-based voice assistants also need connectivity for cloud functions.

Models with built-in Google Assistant must complete Google Home first-time setup before Bluetooth pairing. Check the Beosound Emerge offline-use requirements for the exact model.
E-readers and downloaded books or audiobooks
Reading and listening can work offline when a title is stored on the device. Libby’s mobile app supports downloaded books and audiobooks offline, but titles that have not been downloaded are streamed and need internet. Libby’s web app also requires internet. Check that the title has finished downloading and opens before leaving coverage; the app’s offline-use guidance explains the distinction.
Offline access depends on the particular app, device and title. Do not assume that a book or audiobook visible in a library or media app is stored locally.
Printers
A compatible printer can print from a Windows PC over a direct USB connection without internet, provided the printer, driver and setup support that connection. Microsoft’s Windows printer connection and troubleshooting guidance covers local connection issues.

- Explore confidently with the reliable handheld GPS
- 2.2” sunlight-readable color display with 240 x 320 display pixels for improved readability
- Preloaded with Topo Active maps with routable roads and trails for cycling and hiking
- Support for GPS and GLONASS satellite systems allows for tracking in more challenging environments than GPS alone
- 8 GB of internal memory for map downloads plus a micro SD card slot
That does not guarantee cloud printing or connected services will work. HP says Web Services and Instant Ink rely on internet, and an extended disconnection can stop printing for printers enrolled in the service. Before depending on a printer during an outage, check whether it is enrolled in a connected service and whether local printing is configured. See HP’s guidance for a printer that is not connected to the internet.
Smart plugs, lights and home automation
Some smart-home functions are stored and run locally; others depend on a manufacturer’s cloud. TP-Link says Kasa timers and schedules are loaded locally and can continue when internet is down. Its guidance notes that a schedule continues even if the device is manually controlled, while a timer can stop in that situation. Details are in TP-Link’s Kasa smart-home device FAQs.
Schneider Electric says commissioned Matter-compatible devices can still be controlled and run automations without internet when a local Wi-Fi network and controller are available. Depending on the ecosystem, setting up new devices or using voice commands may not work. Amazon’s developer documentation describes local connectivity options including BLE mesh, Zigbee and Matter, but a protocol’s presence alone does not establish that every routine or remote feature will work offline. See Schneider Electric’s Matter overview and Amazon’s overview of local smart-home connectivity protocols.
Do not assume that all app-controlled smart devices work without internet. Tuya says its app-controlled device connection requires internet. Check the exact product’s requirements in Tuya’s guidance on using a device without internet.
Security cameras with local recording
Some Wyze cameras can continue scheduled recording to a microSD card while offline, as long as the camera has power and the recording schedule was configured while online. Wyze lists the camera models that support this in its offline camera guidance. While the camera is offline, the app cannot provide live viewing or changes to settings, and cloud alert videos are not saved.
Check your exact model’s microSD support, capacity limits and recording mode. Install the card and configure the schedule before an outage; having a compatible card alone does not ensure recording is set up.

- Identify what must stay online. Check the exact model’s setup and support documentation for internet, local Wi-Fi, hub, smartphone, app, account or subscription requirements.
- Download what you will need. Save maps, books, audiobooks and music to the device, then open them once while offline or in airplane mode to confirm access.
- Set up local functions in advance. Pair Bluetooth devices, test USB printing, configure camera recording and create smart-home schedules while the required service is available.
- Keep local equipment powered. A local Wi-Fi network, controller, phone or camera may still be necessary even when the internet connection is not.
- Check storage and support. Confirm that maps and recordings fit available storage, and that the manufacturer still supports the device and its software.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre advises checking a smart device’s minimum requirements—including internet, a smartphone or tablet, and an app or account—and checking its support dates. It says: “You don’t need to buy the latest (or most expensive) smart device in order to be secure but, if possible, avoid buying devices that are no longer supported by the manufacturer, or whose support period will end soon.” Read its smart-device safety guidance.
What commonly stops working without internet?
- Streaming content that has not been downloaded.
- Remote control when you are away from the local network.
- Cloud-based voice assistants, syncing and app features that rely on a manufacturer’s service.
- Live traffic, current online listings and cloud camera alerts.
- Device setup, firmware updates and some notifications.
There is no reliable single percentage for how many everyday gadgets work offline: capabilities differ by model, service and feature. For a specific device, look for whether its documentation says the feature runs locally, requires an internet connection, or works only after setup or downloads.
