Start with the smallest change that removes a real distraction: hide the VS Code minimap, side bar, or panel only when it gets in your way, and keep navigation and error feedback you still need. For a temporary, cleaner workspace, use Zen Mode and exit it with Escape twice. These settings change what is on screen; the official documentation does not establish that they make coding faster, so keep only the changes that work for your own tasks.
Which settings are worth trying first?
Make one or two reversible changes, then use VS Code as you normally would. The goal is less unwanted visual noise without losing your place or a useful route to errors and warnings.
- Minimap: Turn it off if the code overview strip draws your attention. This is a targeted change that leaves the rest of the interface in place.
- Side bar and panel: Hide either when you are not using it, rather than keeping it out of reach permanently.
- Breadcrumbs or Sticky Scroll: Keep these if file, symbol, or scope context helps you stay oriented in a long file.
- Zen Mode: Use it as a temporary reset when you want more of the screen devoted to the editor.
Microsoft documents these as layout and focus features, not as a configuration proven to improve speed. Judge a setting by whether it reduces interruption for the work you do, without obscuring information you need. VS Code’s user interface documentation describes the layout features, while its tips and tricks covers practical toggles and navigation.
How do you use VS Code Zen Mode?
Zen Mode hides surrounding interface elements, switches VS Code to full screen, and centers the editor. You can enter it from the Command Palette or use the documented shortcut: Ctrl+K Z on Windows or Linux, or ⌘K Z on macOS. Press Escape twice to exit. Custom keybindings may change how a shortcut behaves, so use the Command Palette if it does not work.

A reliable 2.4GHz wireless connection delivers stable, responsive performance up to 33 ft, while 5-second auto sleep helps conserve power. Provides up to 250 hours of keyboard standby and 350 hours of mouse standby.
Zen Mode is a broad change: it is useful when you want fewer visible controls, but it is not necessary just to remove one distracting element. Toggle the side bar with Ctrl+B or ⌘B, and the panel with Ctrl+J or ⌘J. The precise behavior and available commands can depend on editor version and configuration. See the VS Code tips and tricks for the documented controls.
Which navigation aids should stay visible?
Breadcrumbs
Breadcrumbs show the file path and, when language support provides symbols, the symbol path to the cursor. They can preserve a sense of location even when other interface elements are hidden. If they add clutter for your task, turn them off and use the Command Palette, Go to Symbol, or Outline instead. VS Code documents these navigation options in its user interface guide and tips and tricks.

Sticky Scroll
Sticky Scroll keeps nested symbol scopes visible at the top of the editor as you scroll. It can help when working in a long or deeply nested file; disable it if the extra lines compete with the code you are reading. VS Code lists it among its editor layout features in the user interface documentation.
How do you keep useful feedback available?
Do not disable diagnostics wholesale just to make the screen quieter. VS Code’s Problems list lets you view errors and warnings and filter by type or matching text. That provides a way to reduce low-priority noise while keeping a route back to issues that matter. The VS Code tips and tricks explains the Problems view and its filters.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhere should you save the changes?
Use user settings for preferences that should follow you across VS Code instances. Use workspace settings when a choice belongs to a particular project or should be shared with its collaborators. Workspace settings are stored under the project’s .vscode folder, commonly in .vscode/settings.json, and can be version-controlled. The distinction is documented in VS Code settings.

For example, disable the minimap with this setting:
{
"editor.minimap.enabled": false
}
VS Code’s interface documentation also describes moving the minimap to the left rather than disabling it. That may be a better fit if you want the overview but prefer it out of its usual position. Store the setting in user scope for a personal preference or workspace scope if it should apply to that project.

How can you evaluate a cleaner layout?
- Identify the specific element that distracts you, such as the minimap or an open panel.
- Change only that element first; leave navigation aids and feedback channels available unless they are the problem.
- Use the editor on your normal work, including the kinds of files and tasks where the setting might help.
- Keep the change only if it reduces unwanted interruption without making it harder to find code, understand scope, or check errors.
- Use Zen Mode when you want a temporary broad cleanup, then exit with Escape twice when you need the full interface again.
This is a personal workflow check, not a speed benchmark: the official documentation describes feature behavior and configuration, but does not provide a named productivity statistic showing that these settings improve coding speed.

Do other editors offer similar focus features?
Yes, but their names and controls are not interchangeable with VS Code’s. IntelliJ IDEA describes Zen Mode as combining Full Screen and Distraction-free modes so the editor occupies the main window. Visual Studio 2022 version 17.5 and later has Sticky Scroll, which keeps scopes at the top while scrolling and offers outer- and inner-scope preferences. Consult the documentation for your specific editor and version rather than assuming a VS Code shortcut or setting applies elsewhere. See IntelliJ IDEA viewing modes and Visual Studio’s Sticky Scroll documentation.
