For longer listening today, turn off battery-hungry audio modes your earbuds support—such as ANC, Adaptive Audio, or Transparency—and return unused earbuds to their charged case with the lid closed. For longer battery lifespan, keep optimized charging enabled if your model offers it. There is no universal case setting that increases the case’s capacity; the right controls depend on the exact earbuds and case.
First, decide which kind of battery life you want
- More listening time before the next charge: Reduce power-intensive audio features, keep the buds charged, and put them away when not in use.
- More years of useful battery life: Use supported optimized-charging features and avoid charging problems such as moisture on contacts or excessive heat.
- More capacity from the case: No setting in the guidance cited here increases the case’s battery capacity. Wireless charging changes how a compatible case is charged, not how much energy it stores.
Manufacturer runtime figures are estimates for particular models and conditions, not controlled comparisons across brands.

Settings and habits that can extend listening time
Turn off audio features you do not need
Active noise cancellation (ANC), transparency, and adaptive audio can reduce runtime on supported earbuds. Google recommends turning off ANC, Adaptive Audio, or Transparency on supported Pixel Buds when the priority is extending charge. For the Pixel Buds Pro 2, Google estimates up to 48 hours of total listening time with a fully charged case and ANC off, versus up to 30 hours with ANC on. These are Google’s product-specific estimates, not independent measurements.

Sony’s guidance is narrower: for the WF-1000XM3, it recommends switching off DSEE HX Auto and Equalizer to conserve battery. Its published maximum playback figures range from 3 hours in some listed settings to 8 hours with AAC, DSEE HX off, and noise canceling and ambient mode off. These are Sony’s estimates for that model, not a rule for other earbuds.

Put unused buds back in the case
Samsung advises keeping unused Galaxy Buds in a charged case with the cover closed. Apple likewise advises placing AirPods in their case when they are not in use. This is a practical power-saving habit, not a way to expand the case’s capacity.
Check the case’s own charge
Fully charge both the earbuds and case before relying on a long listening session. The case is a battery too, and its charging options vary by model. Samsung estimates up to 26 hours for Galaxy Buds3 Pro including a fully charged case; that is a manufacturer estimate for the named product, not a general figure for Galaxy Buds.

Keep optimized charging on to protect battery lifespan
On supported AirPods, Optimized Battery Charging reduces the time the earbuds spend fully charged and delays charging to full until shortly before expected use. Apple describes it as a battery-longevity feature, not a setting for adding playback hours to one session. AirPods Pro 3 also learn from use and adapt an optimized charge limit. Apple says these features are on by default when its device and software requirements are met.
If you need a full charge immediately, Apple documents this route for turning the feature off: on the connected device, open Settings, tap the AirPods name, then Battery. Menu availability can depend on the AirPods model and software. Unless you need that immediate full charge, leave the lifespan-preserving optimization enabled.

Match charging method to the exact case
Wireless charging is available only for specified earbud and case families. Google identifies Qi-certified charging for selected Pixel Buds cases, and Samsung lists wireless charging support for selected Galaxy Buds. Check the exact case model before using a wireless pad; compatibility should not be assumed from the earbuds’ brand or appearance. A compatible pad affects charging convenience, not listening time per charge.
Fix charging problems before changing settings
- Moisture or dirty contacts: Samsung advises drying moisture from charging terminals before charging. Check the contacts and seating if the indicators show an error.
- Wrong case: Use the case designed for the earbuds. Samsung cautions that cases are not interchangeable across models.
- Unusual heat: Samsung says some warmth during charging can be normal, but charging may stop at an abnormal temperature. Its Buds2 Pro guidance advises removing unusually hot buds from a wireless pad and letting them cool.
- Damaged charging gear: Do not use a damaged charger or cable. Persistent charging failures or substantially degraded battery performance may require model-specific manufacturer support rather than a settings change.
