The right dual-monitor docking station depends on your laptop’s video capabilities, the dock’s display method and the resolution you want from both screens at once. Five vendor-documented options are below, but none is an independently tested winner: check the exact dock revision and your laptop’s compatibility notes before buying.
Start with your laptop, not the dock
A USB-C-shaped port does not by itself guarantee video output. Check your laptop maker’s specifications for the port’s video support and the maximum number of external displays it can drive. Then compare those limits with the dock’s host requirements and its stated performance with two monitors connected.

DisplayPort Alt Mode and Multi-Stream Transport (MST) are relevant to some USB-C docks. For the StarTech 101N-USBC-DOCK’s stated maximum dual-display performance, the host must support DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode and MST. A dock’s headline resolution is not a promise that every laptop will achieve it.
Five dual-monitor dock options
| Model | Host connection or display method | Two-monitor capability | Charging and setup notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lenovo USB-C Dual Display Travel Dock | USB-C; one DisplayPort 1.4 and one HDMI 2.1 output | Lenovo specifies dual 4K at 60 Hz. | Charging level depends on the adapter. See Lenovo’s product specification sheet for conditions and exact details. |
| StarTech 101N-USBC-DOCK | USB-C using DisplayPort Alt Mode and MST for the stated maximum dual-display mode | Up to two 2560 × 1440 displays at 60 Hz in dual mode. | Maximum performance requires a host with DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode and MST. Check StarTech’s product sheet against your laptop. |
| Plugable UD-6950PDH | USB-C dock using DisplayLink | Plugable lists it as a dual-4K monitor dock for Mac. | Plugable lists 100W laptop charging. On macOS, DisplayLink Manager and the required permissions are needed for DisplayLink video outputs. See Plugable’s macOS dock guidance. |
| Plugable TBT-6950PD | Thunderbolt 4 dock; DisplayLink outputs are also relevant to macOS setup | Plugable lists support for up to four 4K monitors; that may exceed a two-screen setup’s needs. | Plugable lists 100W charging. On macOS, DisplayLink Manager and required permissions are needed for DisplayLink video outputs. Review Plugable’s setup guidance and confirm the exact outputs you plan to use. |
| StarTech TB4CDOCKUE | Thunderbolt 4; platform and display support vary across StarTech dock models | Not stated for this model in the cited comparison grid; verify the current model specification for resolution with both monitors attached. | Check StarTech’s dock comparison grid and the current product specification for your host and operating system before choosing it. |
These are distinct options, not a ranked test result. The cited product information establishes vendor-stated features; it does not establish comparative reliability, performance in independent testing or current stock.

Choose by display method and operating system
Native USB-C video with MST
A dock that uses the laptop’s native DisplayPort video can be a straightforward fit when the laptop supports the required Alt Mode, MST and display count. The StarTech 101N-USBC-DOCK is a particularly specific example: its stated dual 1440p-at-60-Hz mode requires a DisplayPort 1.4 Alt Mode and MST host. Confirm the laptop’s operating-system and GPU display limits as well as the port specification.
DisplayLink
DisplayLink docks can provide another way to add displays, but they involve software. Plugable says DisplayLink video outputs on macOS require DisplayLink Manager and the required macOS permissions. Factor that setup into your choice, especially if you need a managed or tightly controlled Mac configuration.

Thunderbolt
Thunderbolt is a host connection standard, not a guarantee that every dock or laptop combination supports the same monitor count and resolution. The Plugable TBT-6950PD is listed for up to four 4K monitors, while the StarTech comparison grid shows that display support and platform compatibility vary by model. Match the dock to the laptop’s Thunderbolt capability and the exact outputs you intend to use.
Check these details before you buy
- Two-screen performance: Find the dock’s resolution and refresh rate with both monitors attached, not just a single-display maximum.
- Host compatibility: Verify the laptop’s USB-C or Thunderbolt capabilities, supported external-display count, and operating-system notes in the laptop maker’s documentation.
- Monitor connections: Match the dock’s actual DisplayPort, HDMI or other outputs to your screens and cables. The Lenovo travel dock, for example, specifies one DisplayPort 1.4 and one HDMI 2.1 output.
- Charging: Check the dock’s charging output and the adapter required to deliver it. Lenovo says charging for its travel dock depends on the adapter; Plugable lists 100W for the two models above.
- Software and permissions: If the dock uses DisplayLink with macOS, account for DisplayLink Manager and required permissions.
- Exact model and revision: Recheck the current product page or specification sheet; similar model names do not establish identical display support.
- Ports and portability: Compare the peripheral connections and physical size you need. A travel-focused dock may suit frequent travel, while a larger Thunderbolt dock may be justified by extra displays or ports.
Which one should you choose?
For a compact travel-oriented option with vendor-specified dual 4K at 60 Hz, investigate Lenovo’s USB-C Dual Display Travel Dock and verify charging and laptop compatibility. For a USB-C/MST setup targeting up to two 1440p displays at 60 Hz, the StarTech 101N-USBC-DOCK has an explicit host requirement to check. For a Mac setup where DisplayLink software is acceptable, Plugable lists the UD-6950PDH for dual 4K and the TBT-6950PD for up to four 4K displays. Consider the StarTech TB4CDOCKUE only after confirming its current model-specific display limits for your laptop and monitors.
