Which DNS Blind Spots Can Your DDI Miss?

DDI integrates DNS, DHCP and IPAM, but it cannot ensure every endpoint or workload uses an approved resolver. Map DNS roles, inspect traffic paths and test whether logs and policies cover the devices you depend on.

DDI can help you manage DNS, DHCP and IP addresses, but it does not guarantee that every device uses an approved resolver or that every risky DNS behavior is visible. The gaps are usually at the boundaries: between authoritative and recursive DNS, between managed and roaming devices, and between enterprise policy and applications or cloud workloads that resolve names another way.

What does DDI cover—and what does it not guarantee?

DDI is the integration of DNS, DHCP and IP address management. It describes a platform and operating model, not a universal security outcome. What your team can control and investigate depends on which DNS services are in scope, how traffic reaches them, and whether logs can be tied back to devices or assets.

NIST’s Secure Domain Name System (DNS) Deployment Guide, Special Publication 800-81 Revision 3, published March 19, 2026, supersedes the 2013 revision. NIST’s release announcement calls DNS an integral part of an organization’s security posture and says it can be “an enforcement point for enterprise security policy and an indicator of potential malicious activity on a network.” That potential depends on the traffic and roles your controls actually cover.

The guide addresses authoritative and recursive DNS, DNSSEC, encrypted DNS, logging and protective DNS. Those are related functions, but they are not interchangeable controls:

DNS role What it does Blind-spot question
Authoritative DNS Hosts records for zones, including public zones. Which systems host the zones, who can change records, and how are changes authenticated and reviewed?
Recursive DNS Resolves client queries on their behalf. Do queries pass through the intended resolver, and do logs preserve enough client or asset context to investigate them?
Forwarding Passes queries from one DNS service to another. Are forwarding paths known and controlled, including the destination resolver?
Endpoint or application resolution Determines how a device or application sends name-resolution requests. Can a roaming endpoint, cloud workload or application bypass the resolver and policy you expect?

Do not treat a successful configuration of one role as proof that the others are covered. A well-managed authoritative zone, for example, does not establish that client queries are visible to your recursive service.

Where can DNS traffic bypass your expected controls?

A central resolver view is incomplete if devices or applications can resolve names elsewhere. Review office endpoints, roaming users, cloud deployments, servers and IoT separately; their network paths and ability to follow resolver policy can differ.

Encrypted DNS, including DNS over HTTPS (DoH) and DNS over TLS (DoT), can make it harder to see queries at network points that do not terminate or otherwise monitor that traffic. NIST’s 2026 guide addresses encrypted DNS and information leakage. A June 24, 2024 Infoblox article summarizing federal encrypted-DNS guidance describes requiring approved DNS paths, using encryption where technically supported, and preventing unauthorized third-party resolver traffic. That implementation detail is a vendor’s summary, not a substitute for the primary directive.

  • Identify which resolver each device class is intended to use, including when users are off the corporate network.
  • Check whether cloud workloads and applications have separate name-resolution paths or use third-party resolvers.
  • Establish how unauthorized resolver traffic is detected and handled, and how approved exceptions are recorded.
  • Confirm whether query logs show the original client or enough other asset context to support investigation.

Encryption protects query confidentiality on supported paths; it does not, by itself, prove that the destination resolver is approved or that security teams can investigate the resulting activity. The policy decision is to protect queries while keeping resolver use and monitoring aligned with the organization’s requirements.

What DNS risks need controls beyond resolver coverage?

Changes to authoritative zones

Public and internal authoritative DNS have different exposure and administration needs from client recursion. Inventory systems hosting zones, identify who can modify records, and review how changes are authenticated and approved. NIST’s guide covers DNSSEC for data integrity and authenticity; consider whether it is appropriate for the zones in your design and whether the signing and validation responsibilities are assigned.

DNSSEC operations

DNSSEC is not a set-and-forget switch. CISA identifies deployment and maintenance complexity as a risk area, while NIST’s guide covers DNSSEC. Where you deploy it, include signing, validation, key rollover and monitoring in operational ownership. Improper administration can have service or security consequences; the right procedures depend on your DNS design.

Dual-stack and unmanaged devices

CISA’s DNS risk assessment flags IPv4/IPv6 dual-stack complexity, mobile and IoT attack surface, and source-address verification as risk considerations. Check that asset and resolver inventories account for IPv6 as well as IPv4, and that mobile and IoT devices are included in the relevant policy and monitoring. These are contextual risks, not evidence that every organization has the same exposure.

Threat activity that uses DNS

NSA and CISA describe DNS use in phishing, command-and-control and exfiltration activity, and discuss response policy zone (RPZ) functionality. Protective DNS or RPZ policies can help reduce exposure, but DNS is one layer: pair its signals with endpoint, network and identity telemetry. Define who reviews blocks, how exceptions are approved and how policy outcomes are monitored.

How should you check for DNS blind spots?

  1. Map roles and paths. Document authoritative servers, recursive resolvers, forwarders and endpoint resolver settings. Include office, remote, cloud, server and IoT environments, and record which teams own each service.
  2. Trace representative clients. For each device or workload class, verify the configured resolver and the actual path for queries. Include roaming devices and applications that may perform their own resolution.
  3. Test policy enforcement. Determine how the organization identifies and handles unauthorized third-party resolvers and DoH/DoT traffic. Confirm how supported encrypted paths meet both confidentiality and monitoring needs.
  4. Inspect telemetry quality. Check that query logs can be associated with a client or asset, are protected, and are retained in a form useful for investigation. Review whether administrative activity and network denials are logged as well.
  5. Review integrity and change controls. For authoritative zones, examine access to record changes and the review process. Where DNSSEC is used, verify ownership of signing, validation, rollover and monitoring tasks.
  6. Check resilience and isolation. CISA’s general hardening guidance recommends placing external DNS in a DMZ and using secure centralized logging. Confirm how external services are separated from internal networks, how administrative access is controlled, and whether recovery arrangements are tested.
  7. Exercise protective DNS decisions. If threat-informed policies or RPZs are in use, review how blocks are evaluated, exceptions handled and activity correlated with other security telemetry.

How do you choose what to improve first?

Prioritize gaps by the role and traffic they affect, not by whether a product advertises a particular feature. A practical review weighs these dimensions together:

Dimension What to establish Why it matters
Coverage Which user, workload and device groups use the intended resolver? Uncovered paths can leave queries outside the policy and logs you rely on.
Enforcement How are approved resolver paths, DNSSEC where applicable, and protective DNS or RPZ policies implemented? A feature’s presence does not show that traffic follows it or that exceptions are controlled.
Telemetry Can investigators connect queries to assets, access protected logs, and use them alongside security data? Logs without useful client context may be difficult to act on.
Resilience and isolation Are services segmented, access controlled, redundant as designed, and recoverable? Security controls must coexist with service continuity and controlled administration.
Operational burden Who manages DNSSEC operations, encrypted-DNS compatibility, log volume, false positives and exceptions? Controls need owners and workable processes to remain effective.

NIST’s guide is the current baseline identified here, but NIST’s page carried a July 10, 2026 planning note pointing readers to possible errata. Consult the guide’s current notice when applying it to a deployment.
