The Leica Q3 Monochrom is a dedicated monochrome option with a fixed 28 mm lens; Fujifilm X-series cameras with ACROS simulation and the Nikon Zf are color-capable alternatives with in-camera black-and-white controls. The available specifications and editorial recommendations do not establish a universal image-quality winner.
Start with the key choice: monochrome-only or color flexibility
A dedicated monochrome sensor records brightness data rather than color, so a monochrome-only camera cannot produce color photographs. The trade-off is straightforward: you commit to black-and-white capture in exchange for a camera designed specifically around that workflow. Leica describes the Q3 Monochrom as a dedicated black-and-white camera and says it forgoes color filters. Leica Q3 Monochrom specifications

A color-capable camera lets you make monochrome images in-camera while retaining the option to shoot in color. That is the safer path if you are still experimenting, need color for some assignments, or want flexibility when reviewing a scene later.

Best dedicated monochrome camera: Leica Q3 Monochrom
The Leica Q3 Monochrom is for photographers who already know they want to work exclusively in black and white and are comfortable with a fixed wide-angle lens. Its full-frame, 60-megapixel monochrome sensor offers image settings of 60, 36, or 18 megapixels. Leica lists a Summilux 28 mm f/1.7 lens, optical image stabilization, a tilting touchscreen, and a 5.76-megapixel OLED viewfinder. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative test results. Leica product page
#1 Best Overall

- Dedicated monochrome image processing: GR ENGINE 7 maximizes the performance of the monochrome-dedicated image sensor, making full use of the brightness information captured by each pixel
- GR Lens: 28mm F2.8 GR Lens (in the 35mm format) delivers exceptional imaging performance with edge-to-edge sharpness
- Expressive high-ISO imaging to maximum ISO 409600: Even at high sensitivities, image detail remains abundant
- Image Control Options for Monochrome: New Image Control options Solid and Grainy have been developed to bring out the unique appeal of black and white photography
What the fixed 28 mm lens means
The lens is built into the camera, so you cannot swap it for a telephoto or another focal length. A 28 mm view suits environmental portraits, street scenes, interiors, and landscapes where showing context matters; it is less natural for distant subjects or tight portraits. Leica lists digital-zoom framing from 28 to 90 mm, but that is a crop of the image, not an optical lens change. Leica’s November 20, 2025 announcement
Other useful specifications and the commitment
Leica lists an ISO sensitivity range reaching 200,000 and video recording up to 8K. Those specifications may matter for low-light stills or video work, but they do not by themselves show how the camera compares with other models in real-world image quality. Most importantly, the camera cannot capture color. The 60, 36, and 18 MP settings change output resolution; none restores color capture.

Best flexible route: Fujifilm X-series with ACROS
Fujifilm’s X-series offers a practical alternative for photographers who want black-and-white previews and images without giving up color capture. Fujifilm documents monochrome and ACROS film simulations, with simulated yellow, green, and red filter effects, plus controls for highlight and shadow tone. These are in-camera rendering options, not physical color filters mounted on the lens. The guide is approximately from 2018, so check the exact modes and menu labels for the specific camera body before buying. Fujifilm’s X Series monochrome guide
A 2026 Digital Camera World guide highlights the Fujifilm X-S20 for ACROS simulations. Treat that as an editorial pick rather than a measured universal winner; it does not establish that the X-S20 produces better monochrome files than every alternative. Digital Camera World’s 2026 guide

Another flexible option: Nikon Zf
The Nikon Zf is also a color-capable camera, and Digital Camera World’s 2026 guide points to its dedicated black-and-white control as a convenient way to access monochrome shooting. That makes it worth considering if you want a direct in-camera route while preserving color flexibility. The guide’s recommendation is editorial, not a controlled comparison or proof that the Zf is best for every photographer. Check the current camera documentation for the precise control behavior and available options. Digital Camera World’s 2026 guide

Do you need physical color filters?
No. They are optional creative tools, not a prerequisite for monochrome photography. Leica says compatible Q3 accessories include red, green, yellow, and orange filters for adjusting contrast. Confirm compatibility for the exact camera and accessory before purchasing. Leica Q3 Monochrom accessories
Quick Recap
What to check before buying
- Confirm the capture commitment. A dedicated monochrome sensor cannot save color photographs; an in-camera simulation on a color-capable camera preserves that choice.
- Match the lens to your subjects. The Q3 Monochrom’s fixed 28 mm lens will not suit every distance or framing need.
- Verify controls on the exact body. Simulation names, menu paths, and behavior can vary by model and firmware; Fujifilm’s guide is dated.
- Check current price and availability. Leica’s November 20, 2025 release stated a worldwide launch and a recommended retail price of EUR 6,750 including VAT at that time. That is historical launch pricing, not a current quote. Leica’s launch announcement
- Budget for the full system. For an interchangeable-lens camera, the body is only part of the decision; consider the lenses needed for your work as well.
