Pairing for basic audio is a separate question from access to every feature: some hands-free intelligent features need an Apple Intelligence-supported device, and Live Translation has additional software, firmware, language and regional requirements.
Which devices can pair with AirPods 5?
Apple lists these device families in the AirPods 5 system requirements:

- iPhone models running the latest iOS

- Mac models running the latest macOS
- Apple TV models running the latest tvOS
Apple’s pairing guide provides setup instructions for iPhone or iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV. Once AirPods are set up with one Apple device, they can connect automatically to other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
Apple describes requirements by device family and current software; it does not provide a complete list of every older model that works. That means there is no reliable model-year cutoff to apply across all iPhones, iPads, Macs and Watches here. Check the current operating-system requirement for your device rather than assuming that a specific older model is supported.

Does pairing guarantee full functionality?
No. Apple says AirPods can be used as Bluetooth headphones with Apple devices running earlier software and with non-Apple devices, but functionality may be limited. For full feature functionality, Apple directs users to pair AirPods 5 with an Apple device running the latest operating system software.
Think of compatibility in three layers:

Which features require Apple Intelligence?
Apple’s AirPods 5 announcement says some hands-free intelligent features require pairing with an Apple Intelligence-supported iPhone. This requirement is narrower than AirPods pairing compatibility: a device may support Bluetooth audio without qualifying for Apple Intelligence features.

Apple’s current Apple Intelligence requirements list iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone Air, iPad mini (A17 Pro), iPad models with M1 or later, Mac models with M1 or later, and Apple Vision Pro. Apple also lists Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, and Apple Watch SE 3 when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone; some features require the iPhone nearby. The listed operating systems are iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27 and visionOS 27.

This is Apple’s eligibility list for Apple Intelligence, not a complete list of devices that can pair with AirPods 5. Apple also requires Siri and the device language to be set to a supported language, and notes that feature availability can vary by language and region. What does Live Translation require?
For Live Translation, Apple specifies compatible AirPods, the latest firmware, a compatible Apple device with the latest operating system, and Apple Intelligence turned on. Availability also depends on language and region. Apple does not give a complete AirPods 5-specific matrix for every language and territory in its product announcement, so check Apple’s feature availability page for the relevant location and language.
How to check your setup
- Identify your intended use. If you only need wireless audio, pairing may be possible even with older Apple software or a non-Apple device, though features can be limited.
- Update the Apple device you plan to use. Apple’s full-functionality guidance calls for the latest operating system for that device family.
- Check Apple Intelligence eligibility separately. If the feature you want relies on Apple Intelligence, confirm that the host device is on Apple’s eligibility list and meets the software, Siri-language and regional requirements.
- Check the specific feature’s availability. For Live Translation, confirm the language and region as well as current device software and AirPods firmware.
- Pair through Apple’s device-specific instructions. Follow Apple’s pairing guide for your iPhone or iPad, Mac, Apple Watch or Apple TV.
What Apple’s compatibility information does—and does not—establish
Apple’s requirements support a current-software, device-family answer, not a definitive historical roster of every compatible model. Because operating-system releases and feature availability can change, check Apple’s current requirements before relying on an older device or a particular language or region.
