For a typical two-speaker desktop setup, select the speakers as Windows’ output device, set the speaker layout to stereo, and start with spatial sound and audio enhancements off. Then test any optional processing in the game you actually play. A multichannel system or a game-specific audio mode may call for different choices; there is no universally best setting for every setup.
Start with the right output device
Before changing audio processing, make sure sound is going to the speakers you intend to use. In Windows, open Settings > System > Sound and choose the connected speakers under Output. Also check the game’s audio menu: some games let you select an output device separately. Microsoft includes output-device selection among its basic audio troubleshooting steps: Fix sound or audio problems in Windows.

Match the speaker layout to your hardware
Two desktop speakers
For a physical pair of speakers, configure Windows for stereo. A virtual surround option cannot turn two speakers into a physical multichannel system; it processes the sound for the connected output. Plaion’s PC audio guidance recommends stereo for stereo speakers.
Physical 5.1 or 7.1 system
If your connected system has discrete surround channels, select the matching speaker layout rather than stereo. The system, connection, Windows configuration, and game must all support the channels for multichannel output to work as intended. Plaion’s configuration examples cover stereo and physical 5.1/7.1 setups: Audio issues (PC). Its instruction to turn spatial sound off applies to the configurations described in that guide, not necessarily every game or setup.

Should you turn on spatial sound?
Windows Sonic is a spatial sound option available in Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft describes it as “a spatial sound solution in Windows that can enhance your movie or gaming experience.” That is a description of its intended use, not evidence that it improves every game, speaker arrangement, or competitive result.
For a predictable stereo baseline, leave spatial sound off at first. If you want to try Windows Sonic, enable it and compare the same game and scene with it on and off. Keep it only if you prefer what you hear. Microsoft documents the Windows spatial sound options and how to select them here: Turn on spatial sound in Windows.

Spatial sound can interact with the game’s own rendering path. Games may use different audio approaches, so automatically enabling Windows spatial sound on top of a game’s own processing is not a reliable universal rule. Microsoft discusses spatial sound support and varied rendering approaches in its developer documentation: Spatial sound.

Windows and audio drivers can offer effects such as loudness equalization, bass boost, room correction, speaker fill, and virtual surround. These are optional processing choices, not required gaming optimizations. Their availability and names can vary with the audio device and driver. Microsoft’s audio-effects documentation describes common processing options: Audio processing object architecture.

A practical setup to try
- Select the output: Open Settings > System > Sound and choose the speakers you are using. Check the game’s output selection too, if it has one.
- Set the layout: Choose stereo for two speakers; choose a matching multichannel layout only for a connected multichannel system.
- Establish a baseline: Turn spatial sound and audio enhancements off initially.
- Compare optional processing: In the game you play, test Windows Sonic or an individual enhancement against the baseline. Change one option at a time.
- Use the game’s audio menu: Review its output or spatial-audio options, since available modes and rendering vary by game.
If game audio sounds wrong
- Confirm that Windows and the game are both using the intended output device.
- Check that the Windows speaker layout matches the speakers physically connected.
- Turn audio enhancements off and retest. If the issue remains, compare spatial sound off and on rather than enabling multiple processing layers together.
