Which Data Removal Service Should You Choose in 2026?

Data removal services can manage broker opt-outs, but coverage counts are not proof of lasting removal. Compare plan mechanics, reporting, and evidence before subscribing.

Data removal services can find personal listings on data-broker and people-search sites, then submit or manage opt-out requests for you. They can save time, but neither a large claimed broker count nor a submitted request proves that your information was removed or will stay removed.

This comparison draws on named third-party reviews and a peer-reviewed study—not documented testing by this article’s author. Security.org’s October 1, 2026 comparison reports testing more than 20 services for at least a month and checking more than 50 broker sites. The findings below are attributed to their publishers, and the academic study is treated as evidence about its own participants and services rather than a universal scorecard.

How to compare data removal services

Look beyond the headline number of brokers. A useful comparison asks what a service handles automatically on the plan you would buy, whether it supports custom requests, how it verifies results, and whether it checks again later. A service’s total claimed site count may include sites that require manual action or are not covered by a particular tier.

  • Removal evidence: Check what a reviewer counted as a removal, whose identities were tested, the time window, whether sites were checked again, and whether records remained absent.
  • Coverage: Distinguish automated opt-outs from custom or manual requests, and confirm which sites are included in the specific plan.
  • Reporting: Reports may show broker status, screenshots, exposure scans, or human-prepared summaries. These are different kinds of evidence, not interchangeable guarantees.
  • Fit: Compare individual and family options, free scanning or self-service tools, and whether the service can handle requests relevant to your location.
  • Terms and price: Confirm the current billing interval, refund or trial terms, request limits, and features on the provider’s live plan page before paying.
  • Bundle versus standalone: Identity protection and other security tools may be useful, but they do not establish better data-removal performance.

What independent evidence says about results

Security.org’s October 1, 2026 comparison says its team tested more than 20 services, used each for at least a month, and checked more than 50 broker sites. It also reports 1,000+ research and testing hours and 1,500+ removal requests. These are the publisher’s descriptions of its own methodology; its rankings are editorial recommendations, not a universal winner. Read Security.org’s comparison and methodology.

A separate peer-reviewed study by He and colleagues, published in Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies in 2025, found that participants judged only 41.1% of records identified by the services in that study to be their own personal information. The study also reported that the services were unable to remove the majority of identified PII records. Those results are specific to the study’s participants, services, and methods; they are not a current success rate for every provider or plan. Read the PETS 2025 study.

The two sources should not be combined into a single score: they used different samples and methods. Together, they underline why a broker count, an exposure report, a request submitted, and a verified removal are distinct things. Ask what the service actually reports and how often it rechecks listings.

Which data removal service might fit your needs?

The following options appear in the reviewed comparisons. Features and rankings below are attributed to those publishers; check current provider plans before relying on a tier-specific feature.

Incogni: recurring automated requests

Security.org ranked Incogni first in its 2026 comparison, citing reported removal volume, independent verification, and custom removals. TechRadar describes recurring automated removals and multiple plan choices. Those are reviewer findings, not a guarantee that every listing will be found or removed. See Security.org’s findings and TechRadar’s 2026 comparison.

Optery: exposure visibility and self-service options

TechRadar describes a free tier with exposure reporting and self-service tools, while automated coverage varies by paid tier. A PETS 2025 study evaluated a particular $14.99 plan covering 243 brokers during that study period; that historical study detail should not be treated as current plan coverage. Confirm what the free tier shows and what automation comes with a paid plan. See TechRadar’s review.

DeleteMe: human-prepared reporting

Security.org describes human-prepared privacy reports and a broad opt-out count. Incogni’s comparison distinguishes an automated subset from broader claimed or manual coverage; that scope description comes from a competitor-authored page and should be read accordingly. Look for the actual sites and request types included in the plan you are considering. See Security.org’s review and Incogni’s comparison of the services.

Aura: removal as part of a broader protection bundle

Security.org and TechRadar describe Aura as a wider identity-protection bundle that includes data-removal features. It may suit someone who also wants the bundle’s other protections, but those extras are separate from evidence of removal effectiveness. Compare the removal function and its terms on their own. See Security.org’s review and TechRadar’s comparison.

Privacy Bee: tier-dependent breadth

TechRadar reports coverage above 1,000 brokers or sites on higher tiers and says that expanded coverage is tier-gated. Treat that as the reviewer’s comparison, not as proof that every site is automatically handled on every plan. Check the live plan details for the coverage included in your chosen tier. See TechRadar’s 2026 comparison.

Kanary: a reviewer’s reach recommendation

Security.org includes Kanary among its five recommendations and describes it as having the biggest reach in its roundup. That is the outlet’s editorial assessment; the comparison evidence reviewed here does not establish detailed current plan terms. Check the dedicated review and provider’s current plan information before choosing it. See Security.org’s roundup.

Are data removal services worth it?

They may be worthwhile if you have many exposed listings, want someone else to manage opt-outs, or value recurring checks and reporting. They are less compelling if you expect a one-time request to erase information everywhere or need guaranteed, permanent removal. Broker removals do not establish that information has been deleted from the original sources where it was collected.

Before subscribing, decide whether you need automated recurring requests, custom removals, visibility through reports, or family coverage. Then compare the exact plan’s scope and proof against that need. If you mainly want to understand your exposure, a free scan or report may be a useful starting point—but a scan is not itself a removal.

Incogni vs DeleteMe: what is the practical difference?

The reviewed sources emphasize different mechanics: Incogni is described as using recurring automation, while Security.org highlights human-prepared reports for DeleteMe. Incogni’s own comparison page also draws a distinction between automated coverage and broader claimed or manual coverage for DeleteMe; because it is written by a competitor, treat that characterization as one perspective rather than a neutral audit.

Choose based on the workflow and evidence you prefer: recurring automated handling, human-prepared status reports, custom-request support, or a combination. Confirm current plan coverage and reporting directly before purchase; the reviewed sources do not provide a like-for-like, independently verified outcome comparison between the two.

What to verify before you subscribe

  1. List your priorities. Decide whether you need individual or family coverage, recurring automation, custom requests, exposure scanning, or human-prepared reports.
  2. Inspect the exact tier. Confirm which sites are handled automatically, which require manual action, and whether request limits apply.
  3. Understand the evidence. Find out whether reports show request status, screenshots, or repeat checks, and how often the service checks again.
  4. Read current terms. Verify price, billing cadence, refund or trial conditions, regional eligibility, and included features on the provider’s live plan page.
  5. Set expectations. Treat removal as ongoing management of listings, not a guarantee that every record disappears permanently from brokers or original sources.
