The Knesset says Israel became the first country to do so on 26 December 2025. The sources available here do not establish a definitive count of any recognitions that may have followed, so it would be too broad to claim that Israel is the only country worldwide to recognize Somaliland.
Which countries recognize Somaliland as an independent state?
The official evidence identifies Israel as a formal recognizer. In a 2026 statement, Israel’s Knesset says the country officially recognized Somaliland as independent and sovereign on 26 December 2025, and calls Israel the first country to do so: Knesset statement. Somaliland’s foreign ministry gives the same date in its account of the recognition: foreign ministry release, 24 September 2026.

Those sources confirm Israel’s decision and its stated first-recognizer status. They do not provide an exhaustive, independently verified list of every country’s position as of 3 October 2026. The most accurate answer is therefore that Israel is confirmed by the official sources cited here; a complete current total is not established.
Has Israel recognized Somaliland?
Yes. Israel’s formal recognition is dated 26 December 2025. The Knesset characterizes Israel as the first country to recognize Somaliland as an independent and sovereign country. That “first” description is the Israeli parliament’s official account, rather than a comprehensive census of all diplomatic positions.

Why do the African Union, IGAD and OIC statements matter?
Statements from regional and international organizations show that Israel’s move was strongly contested. They communicate those organizations’ positions, but they are not a country-by-country register of recognition decisions.
African Union
In its February 2026 Assembly declaration, the African Union condemned and rejected Israel’s recognition and reaffirmed Somalia’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity. The declaration called the recognition unilateral and called for its revocation: African Union Assembly declaration, 14–15 February 2026.

IGAD
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) acknowledged the announcement on 27 December 2025 and reaffirmed that Somalia remains a sovereign member state. It said unilateral recognition runs contrary to relevant international and regional charters and agreements. This is IGAD’s stated position: IGAD statement, 27 December 2025.

Organisation of Islamic Cooperation
The OIC’s January 2026 resolution rejected Israel’s action and affirmed support for Somalia’s unity. It also called on member states and organizations to refrain from official or quasi-official engagement outside Somalia’s national sovereignty framework. These are the OIC’s positions, not a neutral ruling on recognition: OIC resolution, January 2026.

Does diplomatic engagement count as recognition?
Not by itself. Visits, representative offices, trade, political contacts or agreements do not necessarily amount to formal recognition of Somaliland as an independent state. A claim that a country recognizes Somaliland should be supported by a direct official recognition announcement or a similarly authoritative record. The evidence cited here does not establish formal recognition by Taiwan, Ethiopia or any other party beyond Israel.

Somaliland’s foreign ministry says the former British Somaliland became independent on 26 June 1960, received recognition from more than 30 states, and then entered a union with Somalia. The ministry says Somaliland reasserted sovereignty on 18 May 1991. This is the ministry’s historical account; its profile does not list the states or provide supporting documentation for the “more than 30” figure: Somaliland foreign ministry country profile.

That historical claim concerns the 1960 state and must not be read as a count of countries that recognize the present-day Somaliland polity following its 1991 declaration. It is a separate question from Israel’s recognition in 2025.
