For a professional mechanic, the best cordless impact driver depends first on the battery platform and drive interface: choose a 1/4-inch hex model for bits and lighter fastening, or a hybrid hex-and-square-drive tool if you need both interfaces. Among the documented options, Bosch’s PRO GDR 18V-215 is a 1/4-inch driver with two torque settings, while DEWALT’s DCF860 offers three speed modes. Bosch’s PRO GDX 18V-200 adds a 1/2-inch square drive. These are manufacturer specifications, not results from a head-to-head automotive test.
What should mechanics look for in an impact driver?
Start with the jobs the tool will do. A 1/4-inch hex impact driver is suited to driving compatible bits and lighter fastening. For socket work or high-torque automotive fasteners, a dedicated impact wrench may be the more appropriate tool; a 1/4-inch hex driver is not interchangeable with one for every automotive task.

Compare tools in this order:
- Battery platform: If you already own compatible batteries and chargers, that ecosystem may matter more than a headline speed or torque figure.
- Drive interface: Check whether the tool has a 1/4-inch internal hex holder, a square drive, or both, and make sure the interface suits the accessories and tasks you intend to use.
- Control: Speed modes and automatic driving functions can help tailor operation, but their presence alone does not establish how a tool will perform on a particular repair.
- Kit contents: Compare the included battery, charger and accessories; the cited product pages do not establish a common kit configuration.
Never use an impact driver’s published torque specification as a wheel-fastener tightening target. Follow the vehicle and fastener service specifications for safety-critical work.
How do the documented models compare?
The figures below come from manufacturer product pages. They are not based on a shared test method, so torque and speed numbers should not be read as a direct ranking of real-world performance.
#1 Best Overall
- High performance: delivers 1,460 in-lbs. Of torque and max 2,800 rpms/3,100 ipms for quick fastening applications
- Quick and easy: quickly release chuck for easy one-handed bit changes
- Improved visibility: LED light helps in dark work areas
- Applications: fastening screws, lag bolts, and large fasteners
- Includes: (1) CMCF800 impact driver; (1) V20 20-volt MAX 1.3-amp hour lithium ion battery; (1) V20 20-volt MAX lithium ion charger
| Model | Drive and platform | Manufacturer-listed specifications | Potential fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bosch PRO GDR 18V-215 | 18V; 1/4-inch internal hex | 215 Nm maximum torque; speed up to 3,300 rpm; two torque settings; two auto-driving modes with automatic shut-down and slow-down functions | A 1/4-inch driver option for bit-driving and lighter fastening where controlled driving modes are useful. |
| DEWALT DCF860 | 20V MAX family label; 18V nominal; 1/4-inch hex | Brushless; speed up to 3,800 rpm; three speed modes; nine built-in LEDs | A multi-mode driver candidate for mechanics already using the DEWALT battery platform. |
| Bosch PRO GDX 18V-200 | 18V; 1/4-inch internal hex and 1/2-inch square drive | 200 Nm tightening torque; 350 Nm breakaway torque; speed up to 3,400 rpm | A hybrid impact driver/wrench format for users who want both bit and square-drive interfaces. Its presence of a square drive does not make it automatically equivalent to a dedicated high-torque impact wrench. |
Which model makes sense for different automotive tasks?
Choose the Bosch PRO GDR 18V-215 for a controlled 1/4-inch driver
This Bosch model has a 1/4-inch internal hex holder and two torque settings. Bosch also lists two auto-driving modes with automatic shut-down and slow-down functions. Those features make it a candidate for bit-driving and lighter fastening, but the listed maximum torque is not a measure of safe tightening for wheel fasteners.
Consider the DEWALT DCF860 if you want three speed modes
The DCF860 is a brushless 1/4-inch impact driver in DEWALT’s 20V MAX family, which the product page identifies as 18V nominal. DEWALT lists speed up to 3,800 rpm, three speed modes and nine LEDs. Those specifications may be relevant if you use that battery platform and want multiple speed settings; they do not establish a performance advantage over the Bosch models in comparable automotive work.
Rank #2
- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces
- Complete a wide range of applications with a high-performance motor that delivers up to 300 UWO, and an impact driver delivering up to 1,400 in-lbs of torque
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
Pick the Bosch PRO GDX 18V-200 when the second drive interface matters
The GDX combines a 1/4-inch internal hex holder with a 1/2-inch square drive, so it accommodates both bit and square-drive interfaces. Bosch lists 200 Nm tightening torque and 350 Nm breakaway torque. Those figures describe manufacturer specifications, not a finding that the tool can replace a dedicated impact wrench for all socket work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy these specifications do not establish a single winner
The cited pages describe product specifications, not independent comparative testing on automotive jobs. Their torque and speed figures may not have been measured under a shared method, so choosing the highest listed number does not show which tool will be most effective for your work.

- Brushless motor for increased runtime and durability
- Compact and lightweight for hard to reach areas
- LED light with 20 second delay after trigger release
- Includes: (1) DCF787 1/4 in. Impact Driver (1) DCB203 20V MAX* 2Ah Battery (1) DCB107 Charger (1) Belt Hook
The available specifications also do not establish comparative ergonomics, serviceability, battery runtime, price or performance on specific repair tasks. Check the current manufacturer listing for the exact model and kit configuration available in your region, then weigh those details against your existing battery platform and intended jobs.
