For a simple new pocket camera under $500, the Kodak PIXPRO FZ55 is a sensible low-cost starting point: it pairs a 5x optical zoom with rechargeable power in a compact body. Its small sensor and digital stabilization make it a better fit for everyday daylight snapshots than dim scenes or demanding long-zoom shots. If you need a rugged camera, more reach, or a video-first design, the right choice changes.
What does a $500 budget buy in a compact camera?
A firm $500 ceiling can cover a basic pocket zoom, a lower-cost rugged model, or selected cameras aimed at travel zoom or video. It does not guarantee premium compact-camera image quality. Sensor size, lens, stabilization, and shooting conditions matter more than the megapixel count alone.

This guide uses “compact” to mean a small point-and-shoot intended for easy carrying, not every camera that happens to cost less than $500. Broader under-$500 roundups also include DSLR, mirrorless, bridge, and vlogging cameras, which may be better for some jobs but are not equivalent pocket-camera choices.

| Priority | Candidate | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Low-cost everyday snapshots | Kodak PIXPRO FZ55 | Simple pocket zoom and rechargeable power; small sensor and digital stabilization are less suited to dim light or long-zoom shooting. [Camera Lookout, 2026 guide] |
| Rough trips or water-adjacent use | Kodak PIXPRO WPZ2 or a Pentax WG model | Check the exact model’s rated limits, sealing, controls, and warranty before relying on it in water. Exact depth and duration are not established here. [Camera Times, 2026 guide] |
| More optical reach | Kodak PIXPRO AZ425/AZ528 or Canon PowerShot ELPH 360 HS A | Longer zoom can help frame distant subjects, but check stabilization, handling, and whether the larger camera still suits your idea of compact. [Camera Lookout, 2026 guide] |
| Video or vlogging | Canon PowerShot V10 | Assess its video framing and audio workflow against your need for still-photo flexibility. [Camera Times, 2026 guide] |
| Screen-free, deliberately simple shooting | Camp Snap CS-PRO | Choose it only if its intentionally limited workflow matches how you want to shoot. [Camera Times, 2026 guide] |
| Stronger image quality on a strict budget | Consider used or discontinued compacts, or a different camera type | Check condition, battery health, warranty, sensor size, lens, and total kit cost. Discontinued models may be harder to find. [RTINGS, accessed October 7, 2026] |
Best low-cost everyday pick: Kodak PIXPRO FZ55
Camera Lookout’s 2026 comparison lists the FZ55 with a 16.35MP 1/2.3-inch BSI CMOS sensor, a 28–140mm-equivalent 5x optical zoom, digital image stabilization, Full HD 1080/30p video, a fixed 2.7-inch LCD, and a rechargeable battery. Camera Times also positions it as a simple pocket zoom. These are guide-reported specifications, not independent test results. [Camera Lookout; Camera Times]
#1 Best Overall
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life
Its appeal is straightforward: optical zoom gives more framing flexibility than a phone’s basic fixed lens, and the rechargeable battery avoids disposable batteries. The small sensor and digital stabilization are meaningful compromises, particularly in low light and at longer zoom settings. For a basic daylight camera, that may be a fair trade; for action, indoor scenes, or consistently high image quality, look beyond this low-cost tier.
When another compact makes more sense
Rugged or water-oriented trips
The Kodak PIXPRO WPZ2 and Pentax WG models appear in the 2026 guides as rugged or water-oriented candidates. Do not infer a safe immersion depth or duration from the word “rugged.” Before taking a camera underwater, consult the manufacturer’s manual for the exact regional model and follow its limits and care instructions. The cited guides do not establish those operating limits. [Camera Lookout; Camera Times]
Rank #2
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 4x optical zoom with a 27mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
More reach: Canon PowerShot ELPH 360 HS A
Camera Lookout’s beginner guide reported a U.S. price snapshot of $379 on September 19, 2026, for the ELPH 360 HS A, along with a 20.2MP 1/2.3-inch sensor, 12x optical zoom covering 25–300mm equivalent, optical stabilization, and Full HD video. The price and availability are snapshots, not guarantees of a current offer. Verify the exact variant and live listing before buying. [Camera Lookout, September 19, 2026]

Discontinued and feature-comparison options
RTINGS names the Panasonic LUMIX ZS80 among its under-$500 camera choices but says it is discontinued and may be harder to find. Treat it as a used-market possibility rather than an assured new purchase. Digital Camera World discusses the Panasonic Lumix ZS99 as an alternative to the Canon SX740 HS, noting its touchscreen and RAW shooting; that comparison does not establish that U.S. buyers can currently get the ZS99 for under $500. Rank #3

How to check whether a listing is really a good fit
- Confirm the exact model and variant. Similar names or suffixes can refer to different versions; match the listing to the specifications and, for rugged use, the manufacturer manual.
- Check the total price and seller. The guides reported the FZ55 at about $140–160 in one comparison and a $139.99 U.S. snapshot in another, both dated September 19, 2026. Those figures are not live quotes. Include taxes or shipping where relevant, and verify stock, seller, and condition. [Camera Lookout; Camera Times]
- Match the lens and stabilization to your use. Compare optical zoom range and stabilization type, not just digital zoom or megapixels. Longer reach is useful only if the camera remains comfortable to carry and handle.
- Check power and video details. Confirm the battery type and whether the stated video resolution and frame rate meet your needs. A vlogging-oriented camera may have a different balance of framing, audio, and still-photo features than a pocket zoom.
- Review warranty and returns. This matters especially for used or discontinued cameras, where battery condition, included items, and return terms can change the practical value.
When to consider a camera that is not a pocket compact
If better image quality matters more than pocketability, expand the search to used cameras or other camera types rather than assuming a new compact under $500 will deliver premium results. RTINGS’ under-$500 comparison includes DSLR, mirrorless, bridge, and vlogging options alongside compact point-and-shoots. Compare the complete kit cost and portability against the compact you would otherwise buy. [RTINGS, accessed October 7, 2026]
