First verify which software your OnePlus phone actually runs. Open Settings > About device, or search Settings for About device, and record the model, operating-system name and version, and security-update date. Phones sold in mainland China may use ColorOS, while many phones sold elsewhere use OxygenOS; the distinction depends on the market, model and release. If your screen says OxygenOS, follow OxygenOS labels rather than assuming a ColorOS menu is present.
An update does not automatically mean every setting was reset. Treat this as a review of settings that affect privacy, notifications, battery behavior and personal preferences. Menu names can differ between ColorOS releases, so use Settings search when a path below is not visible.

1. Identify the software before touching settings
OnePlus said on March 22, 2021, that mainland-China devices would use a customized ColorOS and devices outside mainland China would continue with OxygenOS at that time. That statement is useful background, not proof of the software on every newer phone. Your installed operating system, build, model and region are the authority.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Open Settings > About device (or search Settings for About device).
- Write down the exact model, OS name and version, build number if shown, and security-update date.
- Note the country or carrier associated with the phone. Rollouts and available features can differ by model, country and carrier.
- Before installing another update, make a current backup, use a stable network and connect to power or keep the battery above 60 percent. These are OnePlus update precautions, not a reason to factory-reset the phone.
Restart only when the update screen or the phone requests it. A factory reset is not routine post-update maintenance and should be considered only for a separately diagnosed problem after you have secured your data.
2. Review privacy permissions and special access
Permissions are the most important settings to audit after a major software change. Check whether each app’s access still matches what the app does. Focus on location, camera, microphone, photos or media, contacts and notification access.
Use the permission manager
On the OxygenOS 14 manual, the documented route is Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager. ColorOS uses different labels in some releases. Search Settings for Permission manager or Privacy, open the result, and verify the heading before changing anything.
- Location: Navigation, weather, ride and emergency features may need it. Use the least access that still works, such as while-in-use rather than continuous access when that option exists.
- Camera and microphone: Messaging, meeting and scanning apps may require these. Remove access from apps that have no credible reason to record or capture.
- Photos and media: A photo editor or messenger may need selected images, while a utility app may not need your entire library.
- Contacts: Grant access only when calling, messaging or address-book features depend on it.
- Notifications: Some apps need notification access to provide a feature, but this permission can expose notification content to the app. Keep it limited to software you trust and understand.
Denying a permission can disable a feature, so test the app’s relevant function after a change. If it stops working, return to the same manager and grant only the access required.

Inspect special app access separately
Normal permissions do not cover every powerful capability. The OxygenOS 14 example is Settings > Apps > Special app access. On ColorOS, search for Special app access, Install unknown apps, Display over other apps, Modify system settings or Notification access.
- Review which apps can draw over other apps; overlays can obscure buttons or imitate a login screen.
- Check which apps can install unknown applications. Keep this restricted unless you have a specific, trusted reason.
- Review apps allowed to modify system settings or access notifications, and remove stale entries left by uninstalled or rarely used software.
Do not revoke every special permission as a blanket cleanup. Accessibility, password managers, launchers, wearables and automation tools can legitimately rely on one of these capabilities.
3. Restore notifications you actually need
Updates can change notification categories, lock-screen visibility or silent-alert behavior without making the change obvious. Check essential messaging, calendar, banking, authentication and security apps one by one.
Check app alerts and categories
Search Settings for Notifications, open an app’s notification page, and confirm that its important categories are enabled. Some apps separate direct messages, calls, promotions, background status and security warnings. Keep the useful categories on and disable noise rather than turning off the entire app.
Check lock-screen and silent-notification choices
Review whether notification content is shown on the lock screen, hidden until the phone is unlocked, or replaced by an icon. Choose the level that fits the sensitivity of your messages and banking alerts. Also check whether silent notifications are collapsed or hidden from the status area; a hidden alert can look like a missing notification even when the app delivered it.
Review Do Not Disturb schedules
Search for Do Not Disturb or Modes. Confirm automatic schedules, allowed people, repeated callers and permitted apps. A schedule left over from an earlier routine can suppress alarms or work messages at the wrong time. If a critical alert is missing, temporarily turn Do Not Disturb off and test the app before changing battery restrictions.
On OxygenOS 14, notification-icon and battery-percentage controls are grouped under Notifications & status bar. This is an orientation example, not a guarantee that a ColorOS build uses the same heading.
4. Measure battery behavior before restricting apps
A major update can make battery use look unusual while apps rebuild indexes, synchronize data or finish optimization. Use the phone normally for a settling period, then inspect the battery graph and per-app usage under Settings search results for Battery or Battery usage.
Investigate the outlier, not every app
If one app accounts for an unusually large share, open that app’s battery page and check background activity, auto-launch and synchronization options. Update the app, clear a temporary cache if the phone offers that control, or contact the app’s developer when the drain persists. A single misbehaving app is a better target than a blanket restriction.
Understand the notification trade-off
Restricting background activity can extend runtime, but it can also delay messages, calendar synchronization, health data or device tracking. Keep real-time restrictions for apps that do not need timely updates, and test delivery after each change. Do not disable background operation for every app simply because the phone was updated.
OnePlus describes longer battery life as a possible benefit of system updates, not a guaranteed result for every model. Battery evidence from your own phone is more useful than a universal toggle or a single day of unusually high drain.
5. Recheck display, lock-screen and sound preferences
These are preference checks rather than mandatory security fixes. Review them only if the update changed how the phone looks or behaves.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Display and refresh behavior
Search for Display and brightness. Check automatic brightness, screen timeout, color mode and refresh-rate choices. A higher refresh rate can make scrolling feel smoother but may consume more power; an adaptive option can balance responsiveness and runtime when your model provides it. Verify dark mode scheduling if the phone switched from a manually chosen setting.
Always-on display and lock screen
Search for Always-On Display, Lock screen or Personalizations. Confirm clock style, notification icons, wake gestures and the hours during which the display is active. If privacy matters, avoid showing message previews while the phone is locked.
Sound and vibration
Open Sound & vibration and test ringtone, media, alarm and notification volumes separately. Check vibration intensity, touch sounds and the default notification tone. Then place a test call or send a test message so you know that the chosen profile is audible and that Do Not Disturb is not overriding it.
Home-screen layout
Look for duplicate icons, changed default apps, missing widgets or altered gesture/navigation controls. Restore only the layout you want; an update is not a reason to install a new launcher or reset the entire home screen.
6. Use the correct instructions for your OS, model and region
ColorOS manuals cover multiple releases, and a path documented for one release may not exist in another. OnePlus also stages software availability, so two otherwise similar phones can show different features on the same day.
| What you find in About device | How to proceed | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| ColorOS on a mainland-China model | Search ColorOS Settings for Permission manager, Privacy, Special app access, Notifications, Battery and Display. | Do not assume a ColorOS 11 path applies to ColorOS 15 or 16. |
| OxygenOS on a global model | Use the OxygenOS manual for your installed version; OxygenOS 14 documents the permission and notification examples described above. | Do not present OxygenOS labels as universal ColorOS labels. |
| Different model, carrier or country | Check the exact model and region in OnePlus support or community information when a feature is missing or a problem began after updating. | Do not infer that a staged feature or fix is available on every phone. |
If Settings search returns several similarly named controls, open each result and read its description. Labels such as Privacy, Security & privacy, Notifications & status bar and Special app access can move between releases.
7. What to do when something changed or disappeared
A setting cannot be found
Search the function rather than the old menu path: try permission, location, notification access, Do Not Disturb, battery usage or refresh rate. Confirm the OS version first, then consult the manual for that release.
An app stopped working
Check its normal permission page and special app access, then test whether a battery restriction or Do Not Disturb rule is blocking it. Restore only the permission the feature needs. If the issue affects several apps, record the model, build and security-update date before contacting OnePlus support.

Inspect the battery-usage list, install available app updates, and look for one process consuming an abnormal share. Keep the phone on a stable network and power while system optimization completes, but seek model-specific guidance if the behavior continues during ordinary use.
The update is not available
OnePlus says rollout timing can vary by model, country and carrier. A staged rollout is not evidence that your phone is defective. Verify the exact model and region, and use official support or community channels for availability information rather than applying an unrelated package.
8. Interpreting OnePlus performance figures
OnePlus’s ColorOS 11 overview cites estimated results from its own lab model compared with an earlier ColorOS version: 45% higher overall system resource utilization, 32% faster system response and 17% higher frame-rate stability. The figures are vendor estimates, not independent measurements, and OnePlus says real-world benefits vary by device. They do not show that changing a post-update setting causes those gains. Use your phone’s observed battery, responsiveness and app behavior to decide what to adjust.
Quick Recap
9. A practical order for the review
- Identify the OS, version, model, region and security-update date.
- Confirm backup, stable connectivity and adequate power before any further update installation.
- Audit normal permissions, then special app access.
- Test essential notifications, lock-screen visibility and Do Not Disturb schedules.
- Observe battery usage and change restrictions only for demonstrated outliers.
- Finish with optional display, always-on, sound and home-screen preferences.
- Record the exact build and symptoms if a feature remains missing or a fault persists, then seek model-specific support.
