They affect different things: model improvement, personalization, and ordinary chat history. None is a universal privacy switch, and turning off model improvement does not delete existing chats or files.
These instructions reflect OpenAI Help Center information accessed October 7, 2026. Available settings and labels can vary by plan, region, app, and workspace policy.

Review model improvement before sharing an image
OpenAI says prompts, responses, images, and files may be used to improve its models depending on your settings. For eligible personal accounts, the relevant control is Improve the model for everyone. Turning it off means new conversations are not used to train models; it does not remove those conversations from your history.

- Open the account menu.

On iOS or Android
- Open the sidebar and tap your profile icon.
- Choose Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
OpenAI says this account setting applies across devices. The change governs new conversations, not whether existing chats remain saved. OpenAI also says a conversation associated with feedback submitted through thumbs-up or thumbs-down may be used for training even if you have opted out.

Use Temporary Chat for a different history and memory treatment
Temporary Chat is useful when you do not want a conversation in ordinary history or want to avoid creating or updating Memory from that chat. While it remains temporary, it is not used for model improvement. It is not a promise that nothing is retained: OpenAI says it may keep a copy for safety for up to 30 days.
- Start a new chat and choose Temporary.
- Before sending the first message, choose Personalized or Unpersonalized.
- Make that choice carefully: it cannot be changed after the conversation starts.
A Personalized Temporary Chat may use existing Memory, custom instructions, and plugins. An Unpersonalized one does not. Neither option creates or updates Memory while the conversation remains temporary. If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat and ordinary account settings apply. If a GPT action sends data to a third party, that recipient’s privacy policy governs that data, which may be retained longer.

Check Memory separately from model improvement
Memory controls personalization, not model training. Review Settings → Personalization for the Memory controls available to your account, and inspect or remove saved memories there if needed. Depending on plan and region, Memory may draw on past chats, saved memories, custom instructions, Library files, or connected apps; it does not preserve every detail, and its summary can omit details.

Deleting a chat does not automatically delete a memory saved from it. Memory and model improvement are distinct controls, so changing one does not make the other change. OpenAI also says limited safety-relevant context may be used in rare, high-risk situations even when Memory or personalization is off.

Understand what chat deletion does—and what it does not do
Regular and archived chats remain saved until deleted or removed by a workspace retention policy; archiving does not change retention. Deleting a saved chat removes it from your account view immediately, and OpenAI schedules permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to exceptions for content already de-identified or that must be retained longer for security or legal reasons.
Files saved in Library can be stored separately from chats. If an uploaded image remains in Library, deleting the chat alone does not delete that Library copy; remove it separately if you want it gone from there too.

Temporary Chat can still be subject to account and workspace restrictions and may use limited safety-relevant context. The settings address different stages and purposes; choose based on whether your concern is training, personalization, history, or retained copies.
Check workspace rules if you use an organization account
OpenAI says content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces is not used to train models by default. Workspace administrators can set retention and feature availability, so personal-account instructions may not apply. Confirm your organization’s rules with its administrator, especially before uploading work or client images.
