Which Chart Generator Fits Your Project? 10 Picks From Code Libraries to BI

The right chart generator depends on whether you need embedded code, a published interactive story, or a shared dashboard. Compare 10 tools by job and trade-off.

The best chart generator depends on what you need to make: an embedded chart built by a developer, a polished graphic or interactive story published on the web, or a shared dashboard connected to ongoing data. These 10 tools cover those different jobs; they are use-case picks, not a universal ranking.

How to choose a chart generator

Start with the output and the people who will maintain it. A JavaScript library offers control inside a website or product, but requires development work. A publishing tool can get a standalone chart or story online with less coding. A business-intelligence (BI) platform connects data sources and supports recurring reports, shared dashboards, and team workflows.

  • Skill and customization: Decide whether your team can write and maintain code, and how far the chart must depart from standard templates.
  • Data and refresh: Check whether you will upload a one-time dataset or connect to sources that need regular updates. For BI, confirm that the connectors you need are available and what they cost.
  • Publishing and privacy: Find out whether a chart is public, private, or embeddable; whether a free plan displays attribution; and whether hosting and maintenance fall to your team.
  • Sharing and governance: For recurring team use, consider permissions, collaboration, and administrative controls—not just the person making the chart.
  • Output and accessibility: Check whether you need an image, a vector file, an interactive embed, or a dashboard. Accessibility features can help, but their presence alone does not establish that a chart meets accessibility requirements.
  • Total cost: Count builders and viewers, connectors, hosting, infrastructure, and upkeep. A free software license does not necessarily make a self-hosted system free to operate.

The table groups the tools by job rather than ranking unlike products against one another.

Developer libraries: build charts into an application

Libraries are the most flexible route when charts must live inside a website or product and respond to its design and behavior. They are not no-code chart makers: your team owns implementation, integration, and ongoing maintenance.

D3: for custom visualization behavior

D3 is suited to developers building bespoke charts, maps, layouts, and interactions. Its project describes a set of tools that includes scales, shapes, selections, transitions, layouts, and geographic maps. That flexibility makes it a strong choice when a chart needs to do more than fit a standard template, but it also means the team is responsible for assembling the result. The project points to Observable Plot as a higher-level API for making charts more quickly; that does not turn D3 itself into a no-code product. The D3 landing page displayed version 7.9.0 when checked on October 7, 2026; the version number is not a release-date claim.

Chart.js: for familiar web chart types

Chart.js is a practical option for common charts in web applications when responsive behavior and a community-maintained open-source project matter. Its homepage lists eight chart types and describes charts that redraw responsively when the window changes size. That focused approach can be easier to adopt than building every chart element from lower-level pieces. The project also shows a decimation example using one million points; treat that as an example, not a general performance guarantee for your own data or application.

Apache ECharts: for variety and rendering choice

Apache ECharts is worth considering when you want a broad set of built-in chart forms and control over rendering. The project states that it supports more than 20 chart types, dataset transforms, and switching between Canvas and SVG rendering. Its page also describes generated chart descriptions and decal patterns as accessibility aids. Those are project-stated capabilities, not independent proof of performance or accessibility conformance. The ECharts project announced version 6.1 on its page at the time of the October 7, 2026 check.

No-code publishing: make a chart or story for the web

Publishing tools reduce the amount of code needed to produce an embeddable chart or narrative. The important trade-offs are often public versus private work, attribution, available export formats, and whether the tool supports your intended update workflow.

Rank #3
Weems & Plath Marine Navigation Parallel Plotter
  • Durable acrylic plotter mounted on a marine-grade aluminum roller assembly
  • Includes distance scales at 1:20,000, 1:40,000 and 1:80,000 to fit U.S. Coast and Harbor Charts
  • Includes inch and nautical mile scales
  • Semi-circular protractor for measuring course and bearing against meridian on a chart
  • two quarter circle protractors for measuring course and bearing against a parallel of latitude

Datawrapper: for editorial charts, maps, and tables

Datawrapper is a good fit for public-facing charts, maps, and tables where a straightforward publishing workflow matters. Its free plan supports interactive web publishing and PNG downloads, and displays “Created with Datawrapper” attribution. The product’s pricing page displayed Pro at $21 per user per month excluding VAT and Business at $39 per user per month excluding VAT on October 7, 2026. Datawrapper lists attribution removal and PDF/SVG downloads in Pro. Treat those as page-displayed terms from that date, not a guarantee of today’s price or availability; confirm currency, billing interval, tax, and chart-type access directly before buying.

Flourish: for template-led interactive storytelling

Flourish is aimed at interactive stories and presentations built from templates. Its official plan information describes a free tier with charts, maps, interactive content, private unpublished projects, and public publishing or embedding with attribution. Paid tiers add capabilities such as PowerPoint embedding, exports, team collaboration, attribution-free embeds, scrollytelling, live data updates, and enterprise controls. The official page reviewed does not give one simple fixed price for all paid tiers, so compare the current tier details against your publishing and team needs rather than relying on an assumed universal rate.

  • Printed on high-quality durable paper with stapled (saddle-stitched) binding.
  • Handy 8.5 x 11 inch size. Page count varies depending on the chart.

RAWGraphs: for less-common chart forms

RAWGraphs is a candidate when a standard bar or line chart is not the right visual. UK JournoHub describes it as a browser-based tool for forms including alluvial diagrams, bump charts, beeswarms, treemaps, and circular dendrograms, with SVG export and local-browser processing. Those details come from an independent guide, not a current product terms page. Before putting sensitive data into it or relying on a particular export or license, check RAWGraphs’ own current documentation.

BI and dashboards: connect data for ongoing reporting

BI platforms are designed for more than drawing an isolated chart. They can support exploration, recurring reports, and collaboration, but licensing, connectors, deployment, and administration make the buying decision different from choosing a chart library or publishing tool.

Tableau Cloud: for governed organizational analytics

Tableau Cloud is a candidate for organizations that need analytics authoring, governance, and collaboration in a hosted environment. Tableau’s pricing page displayed Standard starting at $15 USD per user per month and Enterprise starting at $35 USD per user per month, billed annually, on October 7, 2026. The same page says a deployment requires at least one Creator license, with other users assigned Creator, Explorer, or Viewer roles. Those are starting prices, not a complete team quote: role mix and contract terms affect the total. Check current local pricing, package details, and currency with Tableau before budgeting.

Metabase: for self-service exploration against a database

Metabase suits teams that want people to explore data held in their database through SQL or click-based questions and dashboards. Its official page lists an Open Source plan as free, with unlimited users, questions, and dashboards. That describes the software plan; a self-hosting team still needs to account for infrastructure, upgrades, backups, and engineering ownership. Teams that prefer a managed deployment should compare those operational responsibilities with the relevant hosted terms.

Looker Studio: for collaborative web reports

Google’s reporting and dashboard product, called Google Data Studio in the product overview considered here, is useful to consider for web-based reports and collaboration. Google describes built-in and partner connectors, interactive reports, sharing, real-time collaboration, and embedding. Connector availability is not the same as connector affordability: the overview does not settle what every connector or related product tier costs. Looker Studio is distinct from Looker, Google’s separately named enterprise BI platform; do not treat their names or plans as interchangeable.

Power BI: a Microsoft-stack option to evaluate

Power BI belongs on a BI shortlist for teams considering business reporting within the Microsoft ecosystem. A June 2026 comparison by Dupple positions it as a Microsoft-stack option alongside Tableau and other tools. That comparison is not an authoritative statement of current Microsoft licensing, price, or feature entitlements, so confirm those details with Microsoft for the products and deployment you intend to use before comparing total costs.

Which chart generator should you choose?

  • Choose D3 when the visualization must be bespoke and your developers can build and maintain it.
  • Choose Chart.js when your web project needs familiar, responsive chart types without designing every visualization element from scratch.
  • Choose Apache ECharts when built-in chart variety and Canvas/SVG rendering options are priorities for a coded application.
  • Choose Datawrapper for quickly publishing editorial charts, maps, or tables, after deciding whether free-plan attribution and paid exports fit.
  • Choose Flourish when a template-rich interactive story or presentation is more important than a simple static chart.
  • Consider RAWGraphs for less-common chart forms, but verify current privacy, licensing, and export details before relying on them.
  • Evaluate Tableau Cloud when analytics, collaboration, and governance matter across an organization and you can model the required license roles.
  • Evaluate Metabase when database exploration is the goal and someone can own self-hosting or assess a managed option.
  • Consider Looker Studio for collaborative web reports, checking connector and related-product costs for your actual sources.
  • Evaluate Power BI as a Microsoft-stack reporting candidate, then verify current licensing and included capabilities directly with Microsoft.

Prices and plan details are date-sensitive. The Datawrapper and Tableau figures above reflect their respective official page displays on October 7, 2026; confirm the current terms for your location and team before purchase.
