Choose a cat tracker by how you need to find your cat: a cellular GPS collar for remote map location, a handheld radio locator for a nearby search without a cellular plan, or a GPS-and-radio system that pairs outdoor location with a home station. They are different tools, not interchangeable versions of the same technology. None guarantees recovery, and each depends on factors such as coverage, battery charge, fit and your cat’s behavior.
How the three tracking approaches differ
| Approach | Example | How you search | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cellular GPS collar | Tractive CAT 6 Mini | View the cat’s position on a map; supported features include live tracking, location history and safe-zone alerts. | Requires compatible mobile coverage and an active subscription. Battery duration varies with settings and use. |
| Handheld radio-frequency locator | Tabcat V2 | Carry the handset and follow audio and visual cues from the collar tag during a nearby search. | Its maker says there is no subscription fee, but it does not provide remote GPS map location. |
| GPS plus radio | petTracer 2.0 | GPS provides outdoor coordinates; radio and a HomeStation can help locate the cat where GPS reception is poor. | Requires membership, a HomeStation and internet/Wi-Fi for forwarding coordinates. Availability and range are limited. |
Do not treat a radio locator’s close-range guidance as equivalent to a GPS device’s map position or compare their advertised precision as if it came from the same test. The right choice depends on whether you need remote location, a nearby handset-guided search, or both.

Which type fits your search needs?
Choose cellular GPS for map-based location away from home
A cellular GPS collar is the most direct fit if you want to check a map, review location history or receive an alert when a cat leaves a defined safe zone. Tractive says its CAT 6 Mini uses GPS and partner mobile networks, including 2G and/or LTE Cat-M1, and supports live tracking, history, territory and virtual fences with escape alerts. The company advertises service in more than 175 countries, but that is not a guarantee of coverage at your cat’s roaming locations: compatible local mobile service is required, and a subscription is needed. See Tractive’s product page for current model and plan details; prices vary by location and subscription term.

Cellular coverage, GPS reception, a charged device, the cat’s movements and the surrounding terrain all affect what you can do with a reported location. The Associated Press notes that mobile coverage can be weaker in remote areas; its quoted comment from Tractive executive vice president for North America Andrew Bleiman describes “unless you’re in a really far flung place like the middle of a national park,” as a coverage consideration, not a guarantee for any particular place. Choose radio frequency for an active nearby search without cellular service
Tabcat V2 is a radio-frequency locator, not a GPS tracker. A small collar tag communicates with a handheld receiver that guides you with audio and visual cues. You must take the handset with you and search nearby; it does not show remote GPS coordinates or provide map history. Tabcat says its kit includes a handset, two homing tags, splash-proof cases and batteries, and that it has no subscription fee. Its stated tag weight is 0.21 oz and its claimed battery duration is three to twelve months; both figures are manufacturer statements and actual battery life can vary. The maker says V2 tags and handset are not compatible with previous versions. Check the current kit details at Tabcat’s V2 page.
Consider GPS plus radio when indoor hiding is a concern
petTracer 2.0 combines outdoor GPS location with radio communication to a HomeStation. According to its support description, the collar receives GPS coordinates, sends them by radio to the HomeStation, and the station forwards them over the internet to the service. The station also serves as a charging dock. The radio element is intended to help locate a cat in places such as a house, shed or garage where GPS reception may fail; it does not eliminate the need for the station and its connection. petTracer’s support page

The maker says its HomeStation needs Wi-Fi for coordinates to reach its servers, membership is required, and the system has a range of around 0.5 miles depending on location. It says positions gathered outside range can be sent later when the collar reconnects. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent performance measurements. petTracer says it is currently sold in the UK, EU and Switzerland; check local availability, membership terms and setup requirements before choosing it. Its technical page describes update modes from frequent to much less frequent, including a live mode that updates every 15 seconds, and advertises up to 30 days of battery depending on mode and activity. petTracer’s technical information

Match weight and dimensions to your cat
A tracker that is too heavy or poorly fitted may be uncomfortable or unsuitable. Check the exact model’s dimensions and weight, including whether the quoted weight includes its collar, and compare them with your cat’s size. Tractive’s support documentation lists the CAT 6 Mini at 25 g on its own and 42 g with the included collar, measuring 55 × 28 × 17 mm. It says the model is intended for cats weighing at least 3 kg (6.6 lb) and distinguishes it from the CAT Mini. Confirm the model generation and current specifications on Tractive’s support page.

- Check the tracker’s weight and dimensions against your cat, not just the product name or promotional image.
- Inspect the collar and release mechanism. A tracker should not override a properly fitted, safety-release collar.
- Confirm that the tracker stays securely attached without making the collar too tight or uncomfortable.
Interpret battery claims in the mode you will actually use
Advertised battery life is conditional. For example, Tractive’s support page lists up to five days for the CAT 6 Mini with Power Saving Zones, while petTracer advertises up to 30 days depending on update mode and activity. Tabcat gives a three-to-twelve-month claim for its tag. These figures describe different products and conditions, not a comparable battery test. More frequent location updates can change how often a device needs charging. Compare the stated duration with the tracking mode you expect to use and plan a charging routine.

- Decide how you need to locate your cat. Pick cellular GPS for remote map location and alerts, radio for a nearby handset-guided search, or GPS-plus-radio if you want outdoor coordinates and a home-station option for indoor hiding.
- Check coverage and service. For cellular GPS, verify compatible mobile coverage along the cat’s likely roaming area and include the recurring subscription in your decision. For a hybrid, confirm the HomeStation can connect to the internet over Wi-Fi and that the service is available where you live.
- Check the physical fit. Compare the specific device’s weight and dimensions with your cat, then assess collar comfort and safe-release design.
- Compare battery behavior, not just headline duration. Look at update frequency, power-saving features and how you will recharge or replace batteries.
- Plan for the likely search scenario. Consider whether you can carry and use a receiver, whether a cat might hide indoors, and what you will do if GPS or mobile reception is unavailable.
- Confirm current terms and model details. Product generations, service plans, prices and regional availability can change; check the maker’s current listing before purchase.
What a tracker can—and cannot—tell you
A tracker can support a search, but it cannot guarantee safety or recovery. GPS reception, mobile signal, battery state, collar fit and a cat’s behavior all affect its practical usefulness. An indoor location may be difficult to interpret or reach, and location history or activity information should not be treated as veterinary diagnosis.
