The more compact PowerShot SX740 HS offers 40x optical zoom across a stated 24–960mm equivalent range. The PowerShot ZOOM is different: a pocket monocular-style device with 100mm and 400mm optical settings and a digitally extended 800mm setting. These specifications make them useful for different jobs; they do not establish which produces the best images.

Canon’s stated figures describe different things: optical zoom is the lens’s optical range, digital zoom extends the image electronically, and a 35mm-equivalent focal range expresses framing in a familiar format. Don’t treat the SX70 HS’s 130x digital ZoomPlus or the ZOOM’s digital 800mm setting as equivalent to optical reach.

What the SX70 HS offers
Canon describes the SX70 HS as a fixed-lens camera intended to provide DSLR-like versatility without interchangeable lenses. Its product page lists 65x optical zoom, RAW still capture, 4K video up to 60fps, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. That makes it the clearest fit here for someone who wants a conventional camera with long optical reach and the option to work with RAW files.

What the SX740 HS offers for travel
Canon’s 2018 specification sheet lists a 40x optical zoom and 24–960mm 35mm-equivalent focal range for the compact SX740 HS, along with approximately 20.3 effective megapixels, stabilization and 4K recording up to 29.97/25fps. When the PowerShot ZOOM makes more sense
The PowerShot ZOOM is a pocket telephoto monocular camera rather than a direct substitute for either of the two conventional camera bodies. Canon lists optical 100mm and 400mm settings plus a digitally extended 800mm setting, and describes it for uses including wildlife viewing, sports, travel and family outings. Choose it when spotting distant subjects and making casual captures are the priority; choose a traditional camera if you need its broader camera features.

What these specifications can—and cannot—tell you
Zoom figures are useful for comparing stated reach, but they don’t settle questions about low-light results, autofocus, ergonomics or overall image quality. The manufacturer information cited here provides specifications, not independent side-by-side test results. It therefore supports choosing by form factor and listed features, not declaring a definitive image-quality champion.
Availability also needs a market-specific check. The unavailable messages noted above came from Canon’s UAE store pages and can change over time; they do not establish stock or availability in other markets. The SX740 HS specification sheet is dated 2018, and the cited product specifications do not verify current retail listings or prices.
