For a brighter living room, the Epson EpiqVision Flex CO-FH02 is the strongest fit in this shortlist; for movies in a fully dark room, consider the NexiGo PJ40 Pro. The other three models trade brightness for gaming features, resolution, or portability. This guide uses “budget” to mean a US price under $500, but prices and stock change—check current listings before buying. The five models below are use-case picks, not a verified price-ranked list.
How to choose a budget projector
Start with the room, not a feature checklist. Ambient light can wash out a projector’s image, while a dim model may still be enjoyable in a dark room. Then compare the resolution you need, gaming support, and how much portability or automatic setup matters.

- Room light: The Epson CO-FH02 is the only model in RTINGS’ inexpensive-projector comparison it identifies as bright enough to handle ambient lighting without severe washout. The other picks are better suited to darker spaces.
- Dark-scene contrast: The NexiGo PJ40 Pro produces deeper blacks than the Epson, according to RTINGS’ under-$500 comparison, making it a better movie option in a fully dark room.
- Resolution: The Epson and Elfin Flip Laser are 1080p. The Elfin Flip 4K uses pixel shifting for 4K; that is not the same as native 4K.
- Gaming: Look beyond a generic gaming label. Refresh rate, variable refresh rate (VRR), and input lag affect the experience. The Elfin Flip 4K offers the clearest gaming feature set here; RTINGS describes the Epson’s input lag as high.
- Portability and setup: Battery power, compact size, autofocus, and automatic keystone correction can be useful away from a permanent setup, but they do not compensate for a dim image in a bright room.

Epson EpiqVision Flex CO-FH02: for brighter rooms
Choose the CO-FH02 when you expect to watch in a living room, basement, or outdoors after sunset and need more brightness than the other models here offer. RTINGS describes its picture as sharp enough at 1080p, with natural color out of the box, and says an Android TV dongle is included.

Its weaknesses matter most for movie nights in a dark room: blacks can look gray and contrast is weak. RTINGS also notes high input lag for gaming and less automatic setup than projectors with more complete auto-setup features. NexiGo PJ40 Pro: for dark-room movies
The PJ40 Pro is the contrast-oriented alternative. RTINGS says it shows deeper blacks than the Epson, giving dark scenes more depth in a fully dark room. It is much dimmer, however, and is a poor fit if you cannot control ambient light. RTINGS names it its dark-room pick in the under-$500 comparison.

XGIMI Elfin Flip 4K: for gaming features and pixel-shifted 4K
The Elfin Flip 4K is the most feature-rich gaming option in this group. RTINGS describes support for pixel-shifted 4K at 60 Hz and 1080p at 120 Hz, VRR, low input lag, and portability. These features do not make it suitable for every room: RTINGS says it is not bright enough for well-lit spaces.

XGIMI Elfin Flip Laser: a simpler 1080p option
Consider the Elfin Flip Laser if you do not need the 4K model’s resolution or gaming performance. RTINGS presents it as a less expensive, standard-throw 1080p alternative. It is limited to 60 Hz, has no VRR, and is better suited to casual gaming than to someone seeking the Flip 4K’s gaming capabilities.

What to verify before buying
- Current price and stock: Check the price at the retailer you plan to use; this shortlist does not establish live prices for every model.
- Room conditions: If you cannot darken the room, prioritize the CO-FH02’s brightness over the darker-room strengths of the other picks.
- Gaming needs: If you want high refresh rates or VRR, check the specific mode you will use. The Elfin Flip 4K’s 120 Hz support applies to 1080p, not its 4K mode.
- Resolution expectations: Treat “4K” on the Elfin Flip 4K as pixel-shifted 4K, and distinguish it from native 4K.
