These changes target display power and unnecessary background activity. Then use your device’s built-in battery-saving mode when you need longer runtime, and adjust refresh rate only if your device offers the option and you are comfortable with less-smooth motion.
Which settings should you change first?
- Lower screen brightness. Choose a comfortable level rather than leaving the display brighter than needed. Automatic brightness can help on Android when it suits your usage.
- Shorten screen timeout. Set the display to turn off sooner when you stop using the device. On Windows, also shorten the screen-off and sleep times while running on battery.
- Check battery use by app. Look for apps that use unusually large amounts of power, especially when you are not actively using them. Restrict background activity for nonessential apps rather than limiting everything indiscriminately.
- Enable the built-in saving mode when needed. Battery Saver, Energy Saver, or Low Power Mode can reduce background work and selected system functions. Use it when runtime matters more than immediate syncing or full feature behavior.
- Consider refresh rate and dark theme. If your device supports a lower or dynamic refresh rate, it may reduce display power at the cost of motion smoothness. Dark theme is a secondary option whose effect depends on the display.
There is no reliable universal figure for how many extra hours these settings will provide. The result depends on the device, its software, display, signal conditions, and what you do with it.

Windows laptops
Reduce display and idle power
On recent Windows 11 versions, open Settings > System > Power & battery to review power mode, Energy Saver, and battery options. Microsoft recommends reducing brightness and setting the screen to turn off sooner when the laptop is on battery. Shorter sleep timing can also reduce power use while the machine is idle. The options available can vary by Windows version and hardware.

Find apps using battery
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage and review usage by app. If an app is consuming a disproportionate amount of power in the background, adjust its activity or close it when it is not needed.

Use Energy Saver or Battery Saver
Windows’ saving modes reduce power-intensive activity. Battery Saver can pause automatic mail and calendar syncing, live tile updates, and activity from apps that are not in use. Windows 11 also offers Energy Saver and a Best power efficiency power mode on supported systems; these can reduce background work. Microsoft calls Battery Saver “the easiest way to extend battery life” in its Windows battery-saving guidance.
Check refresh-rate options
On supported Windows 11 devices, Dynamic Refresh Rate can lower the refresh rate for static tasks and raise it when activity benefits from a faster rate. Look under Settings > System > Display for refresh-rate controls. Not every laptop supports Dynamic Refresh Rate, and the exact choices depend on its display.

iPhone and iPad
Adjust display and background refresh
Lower brightness and set a shorter auto-lock time to reduce how long the screen stays active. Apple also recommends using Wi-Fi where practical. To change background updating, go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and choose Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi & Cellular Data, or Off. Turning it off can mean apps do not refresh their content until you open them.
Turn on Low Power Mode when runtime matters
Low Power Mode applies a bundle of changes rather than simply reducing screen brightness. It can reduce or disable functions such as Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh, and visual effects, so some updates and conveniences may be delayed or unavailable. On ProMotion models, Apple says Low Power Mode limits the refresh rate to up to 60 Hz. See Apple’s iPhone battery and performance guidance for details on the mode and its effects.

Android phones
Reduce screen use and identify heavy apps
Android settings vary by manufacturer and software version, so menu names and locations differ. Look in your phone’s battery settings for app usage, then restrict background use for apps that are high consumers and not essential. Google’s general guidance also recommends reducing brightness, setting the screen to turn off sooner, and using automatic brightness if useful.
Use Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery
Battery Saver can limit background activity and may delay visual effects, features, network connections, or apps. Keep Adaptive Battery enabled if your phone provides it: Android uses it to limit activity from apps you use less often. On Pixel phones, app battery optimization can further reduce background activity, but Google warns this may reduce performance and delay notifications. What to expect from power-saving changes
Battery settings work by reducing screen activity, background processing, syncing, or other system functions. The trade-off is usually less convenience or responsiveness: a message may arrive later, an app may wait to refresh until opened, performance may be reduced, or motion may look less smooth. If a change interferes with an app you rely on, restore that app’s background access or turn off the saving mode when you need its full behavior.
Try the display adjustments first, then use app battery information to target specific background drain. Save the broad power-saving mode for times when you value extra runtime more than uninterrupted syncing and full performance.
