Claude Code on Amazon Bedrock does not require one universal AWS Region. It uses the Region from AWS_REGION, then AWS_DEFAULT_REGION, then the active AWS profile, and finally us-east-1. Choose a Region that supports the Claude model or inference profile you need, enable Bedrock in Claude Code, and verify that your AWS account has access.
Which AWS Region should you use?
Use a source Region where the exact Claude model or Bedrock inference profile you plan to call is available. Your source Region is where Claude Code sends its request; with cross-Region inference, Bedrock may process it in a different destination Region. Check current model and profile availability for your account and deployment rather than assuming that every Claude model is offered in every Region. How Claude Code resolves the Region
AWS_REGIONtakes precedence.- If it is not set, Claude Code uses
AWS_DEFAULT_REGION. - If neither environment variable supplies a Region, it uses the active AWS profile’s configured Region.
- If no Region is configured through those sources, the documented fallback is
us-east-1.

What settings and access does Claude Code need?
In addition to a usable AWS Region, configure Bedrock, credentials, model access, and—when required—the model’s inference profile.

Enable Bedrock and authenticate

In the Amazon Bedrock console, select the Anthropic model you intend to use and submit its model use-case form. Anthropic’s setup guide says access is granted immediately after submission; organization-level permissions may still apply.

Authenticate through a method supported by the AWS SDK default credential chain. Documented options include an AWS CLI profile, environment credentials (including a session token when applicable), an IAM Identity Center SSO profile, console credentials, or an Amazon Bedrock API key supplied through

Choose model settings deliberately
Claude Code provides ANTHROPIC_MODEL for the main model and ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_OPUS_MODEL, ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_SONNET_MODEL, and ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_HAIKU_MODEL for model-family defaults. For a shared or multi-user deployment, set explicit model IDs rather than relying on aliases or built-in defaults: Claude Code defaults can change between releases, and a default may not be available to your Bedrock account. Check the current model lifecycle and profile support before adopting an ID; examples in documentation are not a guarantee of current availability. When does Bedrock require an inference profile?
Some Claude models on Bedrock require an inference profile rather than a base model ID. The value configured for the model can be an inference profile ID or ARN. Which profile is appropriate depends on the model and source Region, so consult AWS’s current profile support information rather than assuming a base model ID will work.

Claude Code derives a preferred profile prefix from the resolved Region when using Bedrock’s Invoke API:

You can override that preference with ANTHROPIC_BEDROCK_REGION_PREFIX. Supported values include us, eu, apac, jp, au, and global; Claude Code uses us-gov. in GovCloud. A prefix indicates a preferred profile family, not a guarantee that a suitable profile is available to your account. If Claude Code cannot discover profiles, it may apply the prefix without confirming availability, and Bedrock can return an error. See Anthropic’s Bedrock configuration documentation.

Does a Region prefix determine where your data is processed?
No. A prefix such as us. is not, by itself, proof that processing stays in the United States. In-Region inference processes within one Region; a geography-scoped cross-Region profile can route within a named geography; a global profile can route among supported commercial AWS Regions worldwide. The exact destination set depends on the selected model, profile, and source Region. AWS describes the routing options in its geographic cross-Region inference documentation.
For deployment-specific residency and policy checks, call AWS GetInferenceProfile for the selected profile from each relevant source Region and inspect the returned model ARNs. AWS notes that an organization service control policy (SCP) blocking any candidate destination can make cross-Region inference fail even if the source Region is allowed. IAM permissions must cover the inference profile and relevant model resources, including destination Regions where applicable.

How to verify a team deployment
- Confirm the selected model is enabled and accessible in the Bedrock account.
- Set
CLAUDE_CODE_USE_BEDROCK=1and verify the credential method resolves to the intended AWS identity. - Check the resolved Region with Claude Code’s
/status; confirm it matches the source Region you selected. - Pin the intended model IDs and confirm any required inference profile is available for that model and source Region.
- For cross-Region inference, inspect the profile’s returned model ARNs and ensure IAM and SCP rules permit the relevant resources and candidate destinations.
- Run Claude Code’s startup checks and confirm the chosen models can be invoked by the account. Unavailable defaults can trigger fallback behavior, so do not treat a successful launch alone as proof that the intended model is in use.
