For fewer surprise downloads, choose an episode limit or turn off automatic downloads in Settings > Apps > Podcasts. To manage mobile-data use, adjust video streaming and video downloads separately. To free space, enable Remove Played Downloads or delete downloaded episodes manually.
Set how many episodes Podcasts downloads automatically
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Apps > Podcasts > Automatically Download. Choose Off to stop new automatic episode downloads, or select an episode count or timeframe that fits how often you listen. These controls set the default behavior across shows.

If just one show is downloading too much, change its limit without changing the global setting: open Podcasts > Library > Shows, touch and hold the show, tap Settings, then choose its automatic-download limit. Apple notes that automatic downloads for a show may pause after you have not listened or watched for a while; resume them from that show’s page. See Apple’s download-settings guide.

Control video streaming and downloads over cellular
Apple Podcasts has separate controls for watching video over mobile data and for downloading video episodes automatically. If you want video streaming to use Wi-Fi only, turn off Allow Over Mobile in the video streaming preferences. To automatically download video versions, turn on Download Video under Automatic Downloads, then choose whether mobile data can download video or audio only.

Allowing video over mobile data can use your cellular allowance. Choose audio only for automatic downloads, and disable mobile video streaming, if you want to avoid transferring video over cellular. Apple’s instructions identify these options but do not quantify how much data a particular podcast video uses. See Apple’s download and deletion instructions.
Free storage by removing played or unwanted downloads
Automatically remove episodes after listening
In Settings > Apps > Podcasts, enable Remove Played Downloads. Apple says downloaded episodes are deleted automatically 24 hours after they have been played. This setting targets played downloads; it does not remove every unplayed episode.

Delete downloads immediately
For immediate cleanup, remove a single downloaded episode, all downloads for one show, or all downloaded episodes from the Downloaded area of the Podcasts library. This removes downloaded copies; it is not the same as unfollowing the show. Apple documents these cleanup options in its iPhone and iPad download guide.
Use Sync Library only for cross-device syncing
Sync Library syncs podcast changes, including followed shows and playback position, across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. It is useful if you want those changes to stop syncing, but Apple does not describe turning it off as a way to delete local downloads or reclaim storage. See Apple’s iPhone download settings guide.

The menu path and labels here reflect Apple’s current iPhone and iPad guidance; they may differ by software version or language. If a label is not where expected, check the current Podcasts settings on your device.
