Start with the people who can access your home, then review camera permissions and recording behavior. If you use a compatible HomeKit router, consider whether its network restrictions fit your needs. The right settings depend on who shares your home, whether you use cameras, and which hardware and services you have.
1. Review who can control your home
In the Home app, open Home > More > Home Settings > People. Check every resident and guest, including their remote-access and editing permissions. Apple’s sharing guide describes residents as able to access all accessories locally and, when enabled, remotely. Owners can control remote access and whether a shared person may add or edit accessories.

Guests can be limited to selected security accessories, local-only access, and a schedule. Use the least access that works: avoid granting accessory-editing privileges unless someone needs them, and consider whether a guest needs remote control at all. Remote and guest access require a home hub.
Remove access in both Apple Home and accessory apps
When someone should no longer have access, remove them under Home Settings > People. Apple warns that this may not revoke access the person received separately through an accessory manufacturer’s app. Check that app and remove the person there too, where applicable.

2. Set camera access and recording deliberately
Choose what each person can see and manage
For a shared person, open Home > More > Home Settings > People > [person] > Cameras. Review permissions for live viewing, remote streams, recordings, and camera management. Apple says invited people can view live streams while at home; the owner controls whether they can view recordings, stream remotely, or manage cameras. See Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video guide for the available sharing controls.
Check the separate When Home and When Away options
For each HomeKit Secure Video camera, review recording behavior for When Home and When Away. For example, you might stop an indoor camera from recording while household members are home but keep outdoor recording enabled. Apple’s camera setup guide explains that Home uses the location of members’ devices to switch between these modes. The setting therefore depends on household-device location as well as the recording options you select.

Know what Secure Video requires
HomeKit Secure Video requires iCloud+ and a home hub. Apple says footage is end-to-end encrypted, analyzed by the home hub, and available for the last 10 days; recorded video does not count against iCloud storage. Apple’s current support guide lists these camera allowances by iCloud+ plan:
Recommended Free Tools
| iCloud+ plan | HomeKit Secure Video camera allowance |
|---|---|
| 50 GB | 1 camera |
| 200 GB | Up to 5 cameras |
| 2 TB, 6 TB, or 12 TB | Unlimited cameras |
These are Apple’s published plan allowances, not independently measured security findings; consult the current Apple guide for plan details.

Use Activity Zones for alerts, not as privacy masks
Activity Zones let you focus recording alerts on selected areas of a camera’s view. Apple says they are available only when a camera records a specific motion, and they do not change motion-detection automations. They can help reduce irrelevant recorded activity, but they do not mean areas outside a zone are hidden from the camera or never observed.
3. Restrict accessory network access if you have a compatible router
This control is optional and requires a compatible router and a home hub. In Home, open Home > More > Home Settings > Wi-Fi Network & Routers, then select an accessory. Apple’s router guide describes three access levels:
Rank #4
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
| Setting | What it allows | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Restrict to Home | The accessory can interact with HomeKit through Apple devices; internet and other local-device access are blocked. | Apple warns this can block third-party services, including firmware updates. |
| Automatic | Allows HomeKit and connections recommended by the accessory manufacturer. | This is the default setting. |
| No Restriction | Allows connections to any device on the network or an internet service. | It gives the accessory the broadest network access of these options. |
Choose Restrict to Home only if you are willing to lose vendor features or updates that depend on outside connections. If those functions matter, Automatic preserves manufacturer-recommended connections while avoiding the broad access of No Restriction.

4. Understand Apple’s built-in protections—and their limits
Apple says HomeKit data for homes using the new architecture syncs through iCloud with end-to-end encryption and is not accessible to Apple. Apple also describes commands sent to a home hub as end-to-end encrypted and authenticated before the hub forwards them to accessories through HomeKit Accessory Protocol or Matter. Its HomeKit data security documentation says users control whether third-party apps can access Home data through Privacy settings.

Apple’s HomeKit communication security guide states: “HomeKit provides a home automation infrastructure that uses iCloud and device security features to protect and sync private data without exposing it to Apple.” That is Apple’s description of its system design, not an independent audit finding. Encryption does not replace checking who has access, which camera permissions they have, or which third-party apps can access Home data.
5. Check the prerequisites for the features you want
- Remote control: A home hub enables remote control of accessories. See Apple’s iCloud guide to managing accessories and sharing home control.
- Guest access and remote access for shared people: These require a home hub.
- HomeKit Secure Video: Requires a home hub and iCloud+.
- Router restrictions: Require a compatible router and a home hub.
Apple’s Secure Video setup guide covers setup requirements. A hub is needed for these features, but you do not need to buy one just to review or change access settings.
