Start with the phone settings that support tracking
Keep Bluetooth on
Moto Tag 2 uses Bluetooth Low Energy for nearby finding, and Bluetooth is required during setup. If your phone cannot see or communicate with the tag when they are close, check that Bluetooth is enabled first. Motorola’s Moto Tag 2 guide describes the setup and nearby connection.

Allow Find Hub the requested permissions
During setup, allow Google Find Hub to find and connect to nearby devices and determine their relative position while using the app. You must also sign in to the relevant Google account or enter your screen lock to view the tag’s location. If setup does not start, Motorola advises updating Google Play services.
Turn on device location in Find Hub
Motorola’s Android 16 example path is Settings > Google > All services > Find Hub > Allow device to be located. The guide says this lets Find Hub access the tag’s precise location while the app is in use. Menu names and paths can differ by phone and software version; search Settings for “Find Hub” if you do not see the path.

Improve map accuracy without expecting a guaranteed fresh pin
If the map location looks imprecise, check Location Accuracy. Motorola says this setting improves location accuracy for Maps and Find Hub, but it does not guarantee that a tracker location will be newly detected or updated. On a Motorola phone, use Settings search for “Location Accuracy” if the menu path differs. Motorola’s location-services help explains the setting and its interaction with Battery Saver.
Understand Battery Saver’s location trade-off
On the Motorola phone software covered by that help page, Battery Saver disables location services. If a location-dependent function is not working while Battery Saver is on, test it with Battery Saver off. This behavior can vary across phones and software, so check your device rather than assuming every Android phone handles it identically. You do not need to disable battery-saving features permanently as a blanket fix; balance location availability with the phone’s runtime. Search Settings for “Battery Saver” to find the control on your handset.
Use precision features only when the phone supports them
Bluetooth Low Energy is the baseline for nearby connection. UWB and Bluetooth Channel Sounding are additional nearby precision features, not requirements for basic pairing. Motorola’s guide and its Moto Tag 2 product page specify these compatibility conditions:

| Feature | What the phone needs | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| UWB | A UWB-capable Android phone running Android 12 or later; availability varies by region. | Confirm the phone has UWB hardware and that UWB is enabled. Search Settings for “UWB” if needed. |
| Bluetooth Channel Sounding | A supported Bluetooth 6.0 Android phone running Android 16 or later, with the feature supported and enabled. | Check both phone support and software settings. Android 9 compatibility does not establish support for this feature. |
If a precision or ranging option is missing, check the phone’s hardware, Android version, relevant setting, and (for UWB) regional availability. A settings change cannot add unsupported hardware.
Know why remote location can be delayed
When the tag is nearby, a compatible phone can use Bluetooth Low Energy and, where supported, Channel Sounding or UWB to help pinpoint it. When the tag is out of range, Google Find Hub can use its network: participating Android devices scan for nearby items over Bluetooth and report a detection location to Find Hub. If no participating device has recently detected the tag, the map may show its last known location. A stale pin by itself does not prove that a phone permission is wrong.
Full Fast Pair setup requires internet access and a Google account. Check that the tag is paired to the intended account in Find Hub and that the phone is online if setup or account-based location is not working.

Check the tag’s battery and firmware separately
The tag’s power source is a replaceable CR2032 coin cell; this is separate from Android’s phone battery and Battery Saver. Motorola says the Moto Tag app can show detailed battery levels, play a sound, and update firmware. If the tag reports low battery, replace the cell before the tag stops working, because Motorola says some functions are disabled when the battery is low. See Moto Tag app support, the Moto Tag 2 guide, and Moto Tag 2 support.
Motorola advertises over 600 days on one battery as an approximate estimate for a median user under optimal network conditions. The company says actual performance varies with temperature, battery condition, and usage patterns, so treat that figure as a qualified estimate rather than a guaranteed replacement interval. Motorola’s product page provides the claim and qualifications.
Quick Recap
Work through tracking problems in this order
- Confirm the tag is paired to the intended Google account in Find Hub, and that the phone has internet access.
- Turn on Bluetooth; check Find Hub’s nearby-device permissions and Allow device to be located. Use Settings search if the documented menu path does not match your phone.
- If the map seems inaccurate, check Location Accuracy. If location-dependent behavior fails while Battery Saver is active, test with it off and account for differences between phone software versions.
- If nearby precision options are missing, verify UWB hardware and regional availability, or Bluetooth 6.0 and Android 16 support for Channel Sounding.
- Check the tag’s battery level and firmware in the Moto Tag app; replace the CR2032 if the app reports low battery.
- If remote location remains stale, allow for the possibility that no participating Android device has recently detected the tag. Find Hub may show the last known location until it receives another detection.
