Google describes seven years of software updates for eligible Pixel models; Samsung promises seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates for the S24 and S25 series. The terms are not identical, and a phone’s exact model and regional variant matter more than whether it uses Pixel software or One UI.
How the longest-support policies compare
These are the longest commitments established by the official manufacturer sources compared here—not a ranking of every Android brand or every phone on sale. The start date, update wording and caveats differ, so the seven-year figures should not be treated as perfectly interchangeable.

The policies do not establish that one of these options is a universal winner. Google’s support clock is tied to first US Google Store availability, while Samsung explicitly counts the S25 commitment from global launch. For an individual phone, compare the stated end date and eligible regional model rather than relying on the headline duration.
What “software support” means
Android OS upgrades
An OS-upgrade promise concerns new Android generations or versions. Samsung states this measure as a number of generations—seven for the cited S24 and S25 series—rather than describing it only as a number of years.

Security updates
Security updates address vulnerabilities and are a separate measure from Android-version upgrades. Samsung explicitly gives both an OS-generation count and a security-update duration. Google’s Pixel policy groups Android OS updates, security updates and Feature Drops within its seven-year software-support wording. Comparing “years of support” alone can therefore hide differences in what is promised.
Feature Drops and rollout timing
Google includes ongoing Feature Drops in the Pixel 8 commitment. A long policy does not, by itself, show how quickly an update reaches every device: Samsung specifically notes variation by model, network provider and market. The cited official materials do not provide a comparable market-wide measure of update speed or prove that every rollout arrives on the same schedule.

Why an Android skin is not a support policy
“Android skin” is a shorthand for a manufacturer’s software layer—such as Samsung One UI—but a skin does not carry one support term across every phone that uses it. The cited seven-year commitments apply to particular Pixel and Galaxy generations, not automatically to all phones from Google or Samsung. A flagship’s policy should not be assumed to apply to a budget model or a different regional SKU.
Xiaomi illustrates why the exact model needs checking. Its global FAQ says that some models may receive security updates for three years or longer, depending on actual conditions; it does not set one universal duration for the brand. Xiaomi directs users to its end-of-life information and security-center listing: Xiaomi support FAQ and Xiaomi security center. That conditional statement is not directly comparable to the specific seven-year Pixel and Galaxy promises.

How to check support before choosing a phone
- Identify the exact device. Check the full model name and regional variant, not just the manufacturer or software interface.
- Find the model-specific policy. For Pixel, use Google’s Pixel update policy. For Samsung, use the announcement or support information for the exact Galaxy series and market.
- Record OS upgrades and security updates separately. Note the number of Android/OS generations promised and the duration or end date for security updates.
- Check the start date. Google counts from first US Google Store availability under its listed policy; Samsung’s S25 statement counts from global launch. Do not calculate an end date without the relevant start point.
- Read the caveats for your market. Carrier, network-provider, model and country differences can affect availability or timing.
How the Android platform guidance fits in
The Android Open Source Project recommends ongoing device security support for at least two years from launch in its security best-practices guidance. That is platform guidance, not a warranty and not proof that every manufacturer or device guarantees two years. A manufacturer’s model-specific commitment is the relevant source for a purchasing decision.
