Grant an automation app only the access required by the specific trigger or action you have configured. Start with the least-sensitive option that can work—such as coarse and foreground location instead of fine and background location—and add broader access only when the feature genuinely depends on it. Android treats ordinary runtime permissions and special app access differently, so there is no universal permission bundle that is safe or necessary for every automation app.
Why automation permissions need a feature-by-feature decision
Android permissions protect both information and actions. Location and contacts are examples of private data; camera and microphone access are especially sensitive because they involve hardware that can capture the surrounding environment. An automation app may ask for several permissions because it can run many kinds of workflows, but a request is not evidence that every permission is needed for your particular setup.

Android expects an app to check whether a permission has been granted and request it when the protected capability is needed. Your practical question is narrower: Which configured trigger or action fails without this access, and is there a less-sensitive way to perform it? If you cannot name the feature that uses a permission, deny it or postpone the decision.
The exact set varies with the app, the workflow, the Android release and the device maker’s software. A permission that is useful for a location geofence may be irrelevant to a scheduled notification, and a setting exposed as a “special app access” may not be an ordinary runtime permission at all.

Runtime permissions and special app access are not the same
Runtime permissions
Runtime permissions cover protected data or device capabilities that an app requests while you use it. Examples include location, contacts, camera and microphone. Android can present a permission dialog, and you can later change the choice in Settings. The app must handle the possibility that you deny, defer or revoke access; it should not assume that permission was granted merely because the app was installed.
Special app access
Special permissions are a separate category for particular powerful system operations. They are usually enabled from a dedicated Settings page rather than the standard permission dialog. Treat such a request as a consequential choice: identify the exact system operation the automation needs, read what Android says it allows, and enable it only for that purpose. The label and location of the setting can differ by Android release and manufacturer.
| Access type | Grant it when | Decision check |
|---|---|---|
| Runtime access to sensitive data or device actions | A named trigger or action cannot work without it | Can the workflow use a less-sensitive alternative? |
| Special app access | The configured automation depends on the specific system operation | What operation does Android say this switch permits? |
| Background location | A location feature must work while the app is not in use, such as geofencing | Would foreground or coarse location be sufficient? |
| Camera or microphone | A defined workflow actively uses that hardware | Do you understand when capture starts and how Android signals access? |
A least-privilege method for setting up any automation
- Describe the workflow in one sentence. For example: “When I arrive at a saved area, perform an action,” or “When I scan a code, open a particular screen.” If you cannot state the trigger and action clearly, do not approve broad access yet.
- List the data or device capability involved. A geofence uses location; a voice-triggered routine may use the microphone; a contact-based action uses contacts. A timer-only routine may need none of these.
- Try the narrowest scope first. Where Android offers a choice, begin with coarse rather than fine location and foreground rather than background access. Use “while using the app” when the trigger does not need to run while the app is idle.
- Run a test that exercises the trigger. If it works, leave the broader permission off. If it fails, note the exact step that failed instead of granting every pending request at once.
- Grant one additional permission at a time. Re-run the same test after each change. This identifies the permission that actually matters and makes later revocation safer.
- Record the reason for unusual access. A short note such as “needed for an arrival geofence” makes a future review easier than an unexplained list of enabled switches.
Location: choose the smallest scope that keeps the trigger reliable
Foreground and coarse location
Foreground access is appropriate when the app needs location while you are actively using it or while a visible, user-initiated operation is running. Coarse location can be enough for an area-based decision where street-level precision is unnecessary. If the automation still works with these choices, there is no reason to add fine or background access.

Fine location provides greater precision. Consider it only when the automation’s outcome materially depends on that precision—for example, distinguishing two nearby destinations where a coarse area cannot. Test whether the workflow actually produces a different result before accepting the broader scope.

Background location
Background location is the major exception to scrutinize. Android’s guidance gives geofencing and continuous location sharing as examples of features that may need location while the app is not in use. On Android 10 (API level 29) and later, an app must declare ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION to request background location at runtime; behavior on earlier Android releases differs.
Use this access only when the automation must detect a location event while you are not actively using the app. Ask two questions first: would a foreground trigger or a manual action meet the need, and would coarse location be accurate enough? If either answer is yes, use the narrower option.
Google Play’s policy guidance says background access should be essential to the app’s core functionality, provide significant user benefit, and not be requested solely for advertising or analytics. These are platform-policy criteria, not a guarantee that every automation app behaves identically on every phone. A clear explanation from the app should connect the request to the feature you configured.

Camera and microphone permissions
Grant camera access only to a workflow that intentionally captures or analyzes camera input, such as scanning a code. Grant microphone access only when the automation listens for or records audio as part of the feature you selected. Do not approve either permission merely because the app offers unrelated camera or voice options.

Android 12 and later show privacy indicators when an app accesses the camera or microphone. If an indicator appears while no configured automation should be using that hardware, stop the workflow and review the permission. Indicators help you notice access; they do not replace checking why the permission was granted.
Contacts and other private data
Contacts and similar data permissions should be tied to a specific operation, such as selecting a person for a message or checking a contact attribute. A scheduled action that never reads contacts should not receive that access. Consider whether choosing a contact manually, using a single saved value, or entering a non-sensitive identifier can avoid exposing the entire address book.
The same reasoning applies to any runtime permission: identify the data set, the exact step that reads it, and whether the automation can function with less information. Android’s permission model is designed for this incremental approach rather than a blanket approval at first launch.

Some automation tools expose accessibility services, notification access, display-over-other-apps or usage-access switches. These are not interchangeable with ordinary runtime permissions, and the reviewed Android guidance does not establish a universal requirement or safety verdict for any named automation app or workflow.

Do not enable one of these settings simply because an app lists it as an option. First identify the operation that needs it, read Android’s description on the corresponding Settings screen, and test whether the workflow can be redesigned without it. Compare setups by the feature enabled, the breadth of access, the app’s behavior when access is denied, and how easily you can inspect and revoke the setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to grant, review and revoke permissions
During setup
- When Android displays a permission prompt, read the requested capability and the available scope choices.
- Select the narrowest choice that matches the trigger, or choose “Don’t allow” if no current feature needs it.
- Complete one workflow test before responding to another prompt.
From Settings
Menu names vary by Android release and manufacturer. Open Settings and use its search field for Permission manager, then select the relevant category or app. You can also open the app’s entry under Apps and inspect its Permissions page. For a special permission, search Settings for the exact label shown by the app, such as the operation Android names in its prompt.
Use the Privacy Dashboard
Android’s Privacy Dashboard shows recent access to sensitive categories, including location, camera and microphone. Use it after setup and whenever an automation behaves unexpectedly: match the time of access to a trigger you recognize, then remove a permission that no longer has a clear purpose.

Account for unused-app resets
Android can automatically reset permissions for apps that have not been used for a while. A dormant automation may therefore stop working until you open the app and grant the required access again. Treat this as a recoverable state, not a reason to grant every permission permanently.

Troubleshooting when an automation stops working
- The trigger never fires: confirm that the one permission tied to the trigger is still granted, then check whether Android reset it after inactivity.
- A geofence is unreliable: verify whether the feature truly runs outside the app. If it does, background location may be relevant; if it does not, keep foreground access and avoid escalating automatically.
- The action fails after a device update: recheck the app’s permission page and any special-access switch because labels and behavior can change between Android releases.
- You granted too much: revoke permissions one at a time in Permission manager, test the workflow, and leave each unnecessary access disabled.
- A camera or microphone indicator appears unexpectedly: stop the automation, inspect recent access in Privacy Dashboard, and remove the hardware permission until you understand the trigger.
Comparing two automation setups without guessing
| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Feature enabled | Which trigger or action specifically uses the permission? |
| Sensitivity and breadth | Does one setup expose more precise location, more data or a powerful system operation? |
| Scope alternatives | Can foreground replace background, or coarse replace fine, without losing the needed result? |
| Denied-access behavior | Does the workflow fail clearly, offer a manual fallback, or continue in a way you do not expect? |
| Review and revocation | Can you see recent use and switch the access off easily in Android Settings? |
This framework lets you compare configurations without assuming that a particular automation app universally needs accessibility, notification, overlay, usage or location access. Those requirements depend on the workflow and on the Android version running on the device.
Practical examples
A scheduled, device-only action
A routine that runs at a set time and changes a local setting may need no location, contacts, camera or microphone permission. Start with no sensitive runtime access and add only what a failed test demonstrates is necessary.
An arrival-area automation
Begin by testing a coarse, foreground location choice. If the trigger must detect arrival while the app is closed or unused, determine whether the app documents a geofence that requires background location. On Android 10 and later, the app’s background-location request follows the ACCESS_BACKGROUND_LOCATION model. Keep the access only if the out-of-app trigger is the feature you actually need.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA scan-then-act workflow
Grant camera access for the scanning step, complete the action, and revoke it if you no longer use scanning. A workflow that merely opens a saved result should not retain camera access by default.
How often should you review access?
Review permissions immediately after initial setup, after changing an automation, after an Android upgrade, and whenever a workflow starts behaving differently. Use Permission manager to see current grants and Privacy Dashboard to examine recent sensitive access. Revoke anything that no longer maps to a trigger or action, then run a focused test so you know which capability was removed.
The safest default is therefore conditional rather than universal: grant the minimum access for the feature, prefer foreground and coarse location where they work, treat background location and special app access as exceptional, and keep a path to inspect and revoke every choice.
