Start with the settings that match how you use the tablet: review privacy controls, choose a screen timeout, check storage archiving, and adjust Home screen content. If a child uses the device, set up the appropriate profile and controls; if reading or navigation is difficult, explore Accessibility. The exact menus vary by model and Fire OS version, so check the version and active profile before following a path.
Before changing settings: check the model, software and profile
Amazon’s help pages document different paths and feature availability across Fire Tablets and Fire OS versions. Use the routes below as documented examples, not as guarantees for every device. If a menu is missing, search Settings for the relevant term or consult Amazon’s current help for your model. Privacy settings are device-specific and may need to be set separately for each profile.

Which settings should you change first?

Review privacy controls
Amazon documents separate controls for device usage data, app usage data, interest-based ads and location-based services. These controls do different things, so review each rather than assuming one switch covers them all. Amazon says opting out of device usage data processing for marketing and product improvement does not turn off every kind of processing: some data remains in use to provide device features, and the switch does not affect all advertising processing or data associated with Amazon services. App usage data and the Advertising ID are separate choices. Location services can be disabled for the device or for individual apps. Amazon’s Fire Tablet privacy help describes the available controls.
Documented paths include Settings > Security & Privacy > Device Usage Data; Settings > Apps & Games > Collect App Usage Data; Settings > Apps & Games > Advertising ID > Interest-based Ads; and Settings > Wireless > Location-Based Services. If those labels are absent, try searching Settings for “Security & Privacy” or “Apps & Games.” Some tablets also allow privacy settings to be managed from the Amazon account. Changes are device-specific, and users with multiple profiles should review the settings for each profile.

Set a screen timeout that suits your use
A shorter screen timeout can conserve battery when the tablet is idle. For recipes, sheet music or other hands-free reference use, a longer interval may be more convenient. Amazon documents the route as Settings > Display or Display & Sounds > Display Sleep or Sleep; choose how long the screen stays on when not in use. Amazon’s timeout instructions may use different menu wording on different devices.
Amazon’s other power suggestions include dimming the screen, using Smart Suspend, keeping software current, lowering volume, and using Battery Saver or Low Power Mode where available. Amazon says Battery Saver or Low Power Mode is available on 8th-generation and newer Fire Tablets; check your tablet’s Settings and model-specific help rather than assuming every feature is present. Choose whether automatic storage archiving is right for you
Auto Archive can help manage space, but it is not the right choice for everyone. Amazon says it can archive non-Amazon apps that have been infrequently used in the past 60 days, removing them from the Home screen. A notification identifies archived apps, which users can reinstall. The 60-day period is Amazon Customer Service’s published eligibility window; its help page does not state a publication year.
Amazon documents different manual archiving steps for Fire OS 7 and Fire OS 8, so check the version before following its Optimize Storage instructions. Amazon also says removing Amazon-purchased content from the device does not delete it from the Amazon account; that content is saved to the Cloud.

Adjust Home screen recommendations and lock-screen content
If you want fewer recommendations, Amazon documents two controls. To hide an item from the Home screen Discover row, long-press the content and choose “Not Interested.” To remove the Recommendations section, the documented route is Settings > Apps and Notifications > Amazon App Settings > Home Screens, then turn off Recommendations and Continue and Discover Row. For mature or adult-targeted images in lock-screen offers, Amazon documents Settings > Apps and Notifications > Amazon App Settings > Special Offers > Content Filtering. For an adult profile
Amazon says adult-profile Parental Controls are designed for users aged 13 and older. They can restrict web browsing; email, contacts and calendar apps; store purchases; Prime Video playback; content types; wireless connectivity; the camera; and location-based services. They are not a blanket filter: Amazon warns that enabling them does not remove all mature or adult-rated content from apps, books, music or store search results. The documented setup starts at Quick Settings > Settings > Profile and Parental Controls. Enable restrictions and set a password. That password is different from the lock-screen password. Amazon says forgetting it requires a factory reset to restore full access, so choose and record it carefully before enabling the controls.

For a child under 13
Amazon directs families to create a child profile for children under 13, rather than relying on adult-profile Parental Controls. Child-profile options include age filters, content sharing, store access, in-app purchase requests, camera and gallery access, volume limits, whether the profile appears on the lock screen, and child-profile password options. Review the choices for the child’s needs in Amazon’s child-profile guidance.
Set up Accessibility for the person using the tablet
Open Settings > Accessibility and enable the features that help the user. Amazon lists font size, screen magnification, high-contrast text, color correction and inversion, audio descriptions, closed captions, Switch Access and Voice Access. Its guidance says general steps cover Fire OS 5 and higher; some vision options apply to Fire OS 7 and higher; Display Size is available on Fire OS 8; and Voice Access is limited to a listed compatible model with the device set to English. Check Amazon’s Accessibility help for the device-specific details.
Accessibility controls can change how the screen or gestures work, so try one feature at a time and keep the user’s preferred interaction method in mind. Amazon notes that enabling a feature can change device behavior; these are personal settings, not universal performance optimizations.
